Ch. 601The Battle Begins
Key events
- Ye Chen rings Shandora’s Golden Bell. Its chime moves the Skypieans, especially Wyper, because it fulfills a 400-year-old promise: Kalgara had hoped the bell would tell Noland’s descendants that Jaya had risen into the sky.
- The Skypieans let Ye Chen and his crew take the gold, asking only to keep the bell. Nami celebrates enthusiastically, while Robin discovers a Poneglyph beneath it.
- After celebrating overnight, the crew leaves with over a billion berries’ worth of gold and the captive Thunder God Enel.
- On Sabaody, Fleet Admiral Sengoku learns the island cannot be fully evacuated before the assembled Shichibukai’s confrontation. Admiral Akainu has gone ahead without waiting for orders or preparations.
- Akainu attacks Golden Lion Shiki in a bar, killing its owner and servers and destroying the building. Shiki evades the first blow and counters with a powerful kick, flattening nearby buildings. The battle for Sabaody begins amid civilians still on the island.
Character developments and interactions
- Wyper is overcome by the bell’s sound, seeing it as the culmination of his ancestors’ struggle and wondering whether Noland’s descendants will hear it.
- Nami initially focuses on the treasure and later celebrates the crew’s windfall by embracing Ye Chen.
- Ye Chen reassures Nami that the Skypieans do not seem hostile; he and the crew ultimately take the gold and Enel.
- Robin continues her search for history by finding a Poneglyph.
- Sengoku becomes increasingly anxious as Akainu’s impulsive advance makes civilian casualties likely. Garp, initially unconcerned, reacts sharply when he hears Akainu has gone to Sabaody.
- Akainu acts without regard for evacuation or Marine preparations, while Shiki responds immediately and forcefully.
