The wolf pack had lost all will to fight and had no desire to battle the Human Race again. Whenever more humans appeared behind them, they only fled faster.
The Wolf King was helpless about this as well.
He knew the humans could not possibly bring chariots during the pursuit, and he also knew their cultivation was weak, so they could not use their Dharma Treasures again anytime soon.
Under such circumstances, a counterattack had a high chance of success.
But no one was willing to throw away their life.
If the Wolf King counterattacked alone, he would most likely be severely wounded under a combined assault, or even die.
Thus, the only order that could make the wolf pack obey now was to escape.
But the longer this dragged on, the more mana that human capable of using a Dharma Treasure would recover. Once that person used the Dharma Treasure again, even if he himself managed to escape, the wolf pack would have little fighting strength left.
The pursuers behind them refused to relent, and arrows occasionally killed their kin. The wolf pack grew increasingly restless.
Four days later.
The wolf pack arrived at a valley.
Once they crossed the valley ahead, they could leave this place and enter Ape Demon territory.
Then, he could use the Heavenly Demon Wolf King's name to borrow passage. Those humans would be unable to continue their pursuit because of the Ape Demons.
They had not run at full speed during this time in order to conserve their strength. Otherwise, once they entered another Demon Race territory, they would inevitably face difficulties.
After entering the valley, the Wolf King was both excited and faintly uneasy. He was excited because he would soon shake off the Human Race's pursuit, while his unease stemmed from the uncertainty of the Ape Demons.
Ape Demons were clever and powerful. In a one-on-one fight, he was absolutely no match for one. The wolf pack had already lost its spirit, and even with numbers on its side, it would be difficult to win.
He was merely bringing some news to the Demon King; he was not one of the Demon King's subordinates. If the White Ape harbored other intentions, what then?
Just as the Wolf King was feeling anxious about the future, the humans behind him launched their attack.
Two catapults fired at once. One launched solid stone balls, while the other fired Shrapnel Bombs.
The stone balls crashed into the wolf pack, instantly killing and wounding many ordinary wolves. The pack fell into chaos again and charged forward desperately.
Boulders and logs came rolling down from both sides of the valley ahead.
An ambush!
The Wolf King let out a long howl, warning the wolves.
Because moving so much earth and timber required many hands, the ambush site had been placed far from the original wolf den so that the commotion would not alert the pack.
This was the location Feng Xu had chosen after studying the map.
After two waves of rolling logs and boulders, the warriors on both sides of the valley continued deeper in. Their task here was mainly to disrupt the wolf pack; the main battlefield lay farther ahead.
Large numbers of ordinary wild wolves died beneath the catapults, boulders, and rolling logs. The stench of blood in the valley grew thicker and thicker.
Once the wolf pack ran beyond the catapults' range, Feng Xi and Iron Mountain charged at the front, leading everyone in pursuit of the wolves.
When the wolf pack reached the middle of the valley, the ground suddenly gave way beneath them.
This was a pit dug in advance, forty zhang wide and eight zhang deep. Arm-thick branches supported the top, which had then been covered with soil.
Ordinary people could walk over it without issue, but the wolf pack would never hold it up.
The Wolf King leaped straight across, while the other wolves fell one after another, pierced through by bone blades, stone blades, wooden spikes, and more.
Feng Xi seized the opportunity and exerted himself, hurling his spear with all his strength.
This was the move Feng Sui had used against the Pig Demon before. Although Feng Xi was somewhat weaker, the Wolf King's defense was also inferior to the Pig Demon's.
The Wolf King was in midair and could not evade. The spear pierced straight through his hind leg, leaving behind a massive bloody hole.
Compared to the Wolf King's body, the bloody hole was not particularly large, but the strike had penetrated the leg bone. The Wolf King rolled to the ground, then rose and continued forward with a limp.
Feng Xi had run out of strength, so Iron Mountain hurled another spear after him.
The Wolf King had slowed greatly by now and failed to dodge. His other hind leg was pierced as well.
Iron Mountain caught his breath, then dragged his massive iron hammer into battle with the ordinary war wolves behind him. One blow severely wounded them and left them unable to resist; two blows could kill them.
The previous strike had consumed too much strength, so he struck each wolf only once, leaving those behind him to finish them off.
"Stop him!"
Feng Xu shouted toward the top of the valley. He did not tangle with the wolf pack and ran straight for the Wolf King.
The Wolf King's hind legs were injured. He was forcing himself to run by supporting them with his blood and vitality, but if this continued, his bones would crack. Then his hind legs would be completely crippled.
Even now, he could neither leap nor sprint, and his combat strength had been greatly reduced.
The boulders and logs had already been used up, yet everyone remained where they were. The Lukun Tribe's fear of the wolf pack ran deep into their bones. Even with the Wolf King injured, they still did not dare step forward.
Feng Xu cursed under his breath in anger and quickened his pace.
Tie Song cursed loudly, called for the Red Iron Tribe warriors, and slid down along the valley wall. Several women Feng Xu had traded for also followed with weapons in hand.
They were from the Marsh Tribe and had once been responsible for harvesting rice.
The Wolf King raced onward until an earthen wall appeared before him. It had been made from the soil excavated from the pit and was the final obstacle blocking the wolf pack's path.
For the Wolf King at full strength, he could have cleared it with a single jump or smashed straight through it. But now, he needed to climb it using his forelimbs.
Twelve warriors stood atop the earthen wall, eight men and four women.
"Get out of my way!"
The Wolf King roared, demonic energy churning all over his body.
Those twelve warriors were not fully armored. They could not possibly stop him.
"Danger! Fall back!"
Feng Xu shouted urgently. Then he leaped forward, drew his bow in midair, and fired two arrows in rapid succession.
After landing, he continued the pursuit.
The wounds from the arrows were too small. They only sank a foot deep and did not even pierce the Wolf King's hide.
Iron Mountain and the others activated their bloodlines and hurled their spears at the Wolf King with all their strength before immediately moving aside.
The Wolf King took more than a dozen spears head-on. All of them lodged in his bones without piercing through.
It was the first time several of the women had taken part in such a battle, and they did not react in time.
Tie Song threw the stunned women aside. He himself was sent flying by the Wolf King's charge and landed on the ground, dazed and disoriented.
He was the only one among them wearing armor, so he had prioritized protecting the others.
The Wolf King climbed over the earthen wall, paused briefly after landing, and then continued onward. No one remained capable of blocking his path.
Feng Xu checked Tie Song's condition and, finding that he was unharmed, let out a breath of relief.
"I failed to complete the mission and let the wise one down."
Tie Song gestured with his hands.
"It isn't your fault. You did your best."
Feng Xu looked at the Wolf King fleeing into the distance, feeling somewhat worried.
Such a cunning and vicious opponent would surely find a way to retaliate if he recovered his strength someday.
A long eagle cry rang out from the sea of clouds, and a Giant Eagle descended from the sky.
It was the Eagle King.
The injured Wolf King had no time to care about anything else. His only thought was to rush into the forest.
The Eagle King's talons seized the Wolf King by the neck, trying to carry him into the sky.
The Wolf King turned to bite at the talons. The Eagle King released his grip and attacked the Wolf King's eyes instead, while the Wolf King shook his head to evade...
When Feng Xu saw the Eagle King take action, joy filled his heart, and he hurried after him.
The Eagle King flew into the sky again, preparing his next attack. Taking advantage of the moment, the Wolf King raced toward the forest.
Two wind blades descended from above. The Wolf King failed to dodge and was driven back again.
Two wounds deep enough to expose bone appeared on his neck.
When the Wolf King tried to rise again, the bones in his hind legs finally shattered completely. He could only crawl with his forepaws.
Knowing the situation was hopeless, the Wolf King gave up struggling and waited for death.
A golden net spread open and swallowed the Wolf King within it.
The Eagle King, who had been diving down, hurriedly stopped and circled in the air. He did not land until Feng Xu put away the Dharma Treasure.
"Thank you for your help this time, Eagle King."
Feng Xu stepped forward and bowed deeply in thanks.
"I merely happened to pass by. There is no need for courtesy."
The Eagle King spoke flatly.
What a convenient coincidence.
He had saved Tie Song and the other man earlier, so he should have known that Feng Xu had clashed with the Wolf King. He had waited until the Wolf King was weakened before coming to deliver the final blow.
From high above, the Eagle King could see far. He must have long since taken in the entire situation from the sky. Since he had deliberately come to finish off the Wolf King, there had to be something on the Wolf King that he wanted.
"Thanks to the Eagle King's intervention, we were able to capture this demon. How may this junior repay you?"
I'll only say this once. If you keep being polite, I truly won't give you anything.
"This demon has cultivated for several thousand years, and his cultivation is spread throughout his entire body. I do not ask for much. His internal organs will be enough for me."
