Nature and Cosmological Role

  • The Great Dao and individual Great Daos are distinct. The overarching Great Dao commands the Three Thousand Great Daos, while cultivators comprehend particular paths such as Alchemy, Yin-Yang, Space, or Strength 7 89.
  • It stands above the Heavenly Dao. Its gaze can dissolve Heavenly Dao punishment, frighten away the Heavenly Dao Divine Wheel, and damage that wheel directly 49 198.
  • It is impartial rather than self-serving. It maintains Chaos without purging cultivators simply because their existence increases its burden 272 284.
  • Its Origin is consumable. Sustaining worlds and supporting an increasing population of powerful cultivators places a continuous demand on it 232 272.
  • Hongmeng replenishes it. Substances transmitted through Chaos Mountain strengthen its Origin; the Primordial Chaos Gate lies above the mountain 273.
  • It nurtured the Three Thousand Chaos Demon Gods. Their ancient comprehension of the Great Dao survives even after their cultivation declines 263.

History

Withdrawal from Taiji Chaos

Early accounts describe the Great Dao withdrawing after Pangu opened Heaven and Earth, leaving the Heavenly Dao to govern the Primordial Wilderness. With ordinary access to the Great Dao lost, most beings cultivated Heavenly Dao Laws instead 7 31.

Pangu later reveals that this withdrawal was not simply voluntary seclusion. Powerful beings from the other four Chaos worlds sealed Taiji Chaos’s passage to reduce Great Dao Origin consumption and lengthen the intervals between their own tribulations. They also established the Eternal Divine Kingdom to monitor Taiji Chaos and prevent the emergence of Primordial Daluo Golden Immortals 220.

Renewed Attention to Lin Changsheng

Lin Changsheng’s Great Dao Rewards Diligence talent draws the Great Dao’s attention despite its withdrawal. Its first gift gives him five Great Dao Seeds, followed by further rewards as his cultivation and comprehension develop 7 31 49 89.

Its interventions also protect him from Heavenly Dao punishment. During his advancement to Great Luo Golden Immortal, a single glance breaks the World-Destroying Thunder’s lock and disperses the power within the Eye of Divine Punishment 49.

The Great Dao subsequently accepts Fuxi’s oath to join the Changsheng Immortal Sect and supplies the Origin that transforms Lin Changsheng’s Dream World into Changsheng Heaven 121 161.

The Filth Law Crisis

At Chaos Mountain, Lin Changsheng discovers that Filthy Substance is mixed into Great Dao power. Cultivators absorbing that power unknowingly admit the contamination into their bodies, where it gradually erodes their Primordial Spirits 268 269.

Suo Xin explains that the contamination has penetrated the Great Dao itself and is rapidly draining its Origin. Lin Changsheng and Suo Xin identify weakened Origin or turmoil in Hongmeng as possible causes of its failure to control the incoming substances; simply sealing Chaos Mountain would not remove the corruption already present 273.

Lin Changsheng first develops an Identification Array Disk to detect contaminated cultivators. He then devises the Myriad Beings Origin Reversal Great Array, which converts cultivation into Origin that only the Great Dao can absorb 278 281.

The eight Great Dao Realm experts resist the personal cost of this solution. Lin Changsheng suppresses them and deploys the formation across the Four Great Chaos. Countless cultivators willingly reverse their cultivation, while the eight experts lose substantially more Origin than they would have under the original arrangement 282 284.

Recovery and Return

As its Origin recovers, the Great Dao cleanses the Filth Law. The Void Dragon Clan on Chaos Mountain begins to perish, the mountain returns to its former size, and Earth, Water, Wind, and Fire recover throughout the Four Great Chaos 285.

After its recovery, Lin Changsheng returns to Taiji Chaos, slays the Three Thousand Chaos Demon Gods, and uses their Great Dao origins to restore its presence there. This gives the Primordial Wilderness’s inhabitants—including its Saints—a renewed opportunity to cultivate beyond their previous restrictions 285.

Abilities and Functions

Great Dao’s Gaze

The Great Dao can direct its attention toward particular beings, granting rewards or overriding inferior cosmic powers.

  • Its first gaze upon Lin Changsheng feels ancient, desolate, and exalted, descending from beyond the world before becoming light within his Primordial Spirit 7.
  • Repeated attention is associated with his diligent cultivation, breakthroughs, and exceptional comprehension 31 49 89 221.
  • Its gaze destroys the Heavenly Dao’s lightning and damages the Heavenly Dao Divine Wheel during the establishment of the Earthly Dao 198.
  • The Eye of the Great Dao manifests during the Origin-replenishing formation, visibly weakened before absorbing the offered Origin 284.

Bestowal of Great Dao Seeds and Talismans

Seeds provide a foundation for comprehension; complete talismans embody perfected Great Daos.

Reward Recipient and circumstances
Alchemy, Yin-Yang, Karma, Artifacts, and Sword Seeds Granted to Lin Changsheng when Great Dao Rewards Diligence unlocks at Golden Immortal 7.
Space and Destruction Seeds Granted when his cultivation speed draws its attention again 31.
Fire, Water, and Wind Seeds Bestowed during his Great Luo Golden Immortal breakthrough and identified afterward 49 50.
Wood and Grass, Wood, and Earth Seeds Granted after his prolonged enlightenment involving the Great Dao of Nature 89.
Further batches of Seeds Repeatedly bestowed during seclusion, including documented batches of seven and four; absorbed by his Primordial Law 221.
Ten complete Great Dao Talismans Granted after the enhancement of Great Dao Rewards Diligence. Unlike Seeds, they represent ten perfected Great Daos 232.
  • Seeds must be cultivated and comprehended so that they can develop 7.
  • Lin Changsheng’s Primordial Law can absorb Seeds, but still needs time to assimilate them; complete talismans provide a more immediate benefit 232.
  • These gifts expend Great Dao Origin rather than supplying power without cost 221 232.

World Transformation

Through Lin Changsheng’s Lord of the World talent, the Great Dao bestows a trace of its own Origin upon his Dream World.

  • The trace contains the complete Three Thousand Great Daos in an extremely weak form, with further development dependent on the world’s growth 161.
  • It creates laws belonging to the Dream World itself, replacing its inhabitants’ previous reliance on the Primordial Heavenly Dao’s laws while inside 161.
  • It turns the formerly illusory world into a real one and expands it beyond the Primordial Wilderness’s size 161.
  • Its influence raises the Dream Embroidered Handkerchief to a top-grade Chaos Spiritual Treasure and awakens an artifact spirit to manage the world 161.

Oath Recognition

The Great Dao can accept an oath and enforce it against connections supported by the Heavenly Dao.

  • It accepts Fuxi’s declaration that he will never join the Demon Race and his decision to enter the Changsheng Immortal Sect 121.
  • Its power severs every connection between Fuxi and the Demon Race 121.
  • The threatened World-Ending Divine Thunder subsequently dissipates 121.

Merit Bestowal

The Great Dao rewards achievements that address the crisis threatening its continued operation.

  • It bestows abundant merit when Lin Changsheng successfully refines the Identification Array Disk 278.
  • A second bestowal follows his comprehension of the Myriad Beings Origin Reversal Great Array 281.
  • This merit protects him during negotiations with the eight Great Dao Realm experts and later supports his cultivation 282 283.

Purification

The Great Dao can destroy Filthy Substance, but its effectiveness depends on the condition of its Origin.

  • Before its deterioration becomes severe, it sends wind and fire to destroy exposed Filth Energy Substance 277.
  • As it weakens, even a short delay lets the substance retreat to Chaos Mountain 277.
  • Replenishing its Origin restores its ability to cleanse the hidden Filth Law without requiring cultivators to remove every trace individually 281 284 285.

Cultivation of the Great Dao

Access and Advancement

  • Laws can lead to Great Daos. Nuwa’s Law of Creation acquires Great Dao Rhythm, while Lin Changsheng directly advances his Law of Formations into the Great Dao of Formations 44 68.
  • Comprehension has multiple sources. Lin Changsheng obtains the Dream Dao from a Creation Jade Slip Fragment, Metal insights while refining treasures, and Strength from Pangu’s axe mark 8 29 57.
  • Great Dao cultivation offers a route to Primordial Daluo Golden Immortality. It is exceptionally difficult when the Great Dao is inaccessible, demanding foundation, comprehension, and destiny 52 62.
  • At Primordial Daluo Golden Immortal, attacks can connect directly to Great Dao power rather than relying solely on the cultivator’s own magic power 160.
  • Primordial Limitless Grand Luo Golden Immortals fuse Great Dao power into talisman seals. Body-tempering cultivators incorporate these talismans into their flesh 238.
  • Great Dao Realm experts wield complete Great Dao power. Suo Xin’s body is constituted from the Great Dao rather than ordinary flesh and blood 272 284.

Applications and Limits

Application Documented example
Alchemy Produces pill-refining knowledge, including the Nine-Revolutions Golden Elixir formula 7.
Combat techniques Yin-Yang Grinding Mill, Shatter Space, World-Ending Holy Light, and Sword Dao techniques arise from particular Great Daos 7 34 78.
Artifact refinement The Heavenly Refining Treasure Art can refine top-grade Houtian Spiritual Treasures, but does not independently supply the Indestructible Innate Light needed for Innate Spiritual Treasures 52.
Creation and vitality Creation Dao Rhythm encourages spiritual plants’ growth and helps the Enlightenment Tea Tree develop intelligence 51 52.
Reality alteration The Dream Dao can, at its utmost, allow dreams to replace reality 8.
Combined attacks Lin Changsheng’s Primordial Law allows multiple Great Daos to fuse without the conflict they would otherwise cause 107.
  • Great Dao techniques still place demands on a cultivator’s available power: unleashing several in succession nearly drains Lin Changsheng’s magic power during an early battle 45.
  • Superiority of principle does not erase differences in cultivation. Luohou counters several of Lin Changsheng’s Great Dao techniques using his deeper cultivation and Demonic Dao Law 72.
  • Early cultivators who abandon the Primordial Heavenly Dao for Changsheng Heaven lose at least one major realm because the new world’s laws are still incomplete 169.
