Background / History

Meeting Li Qingxiao

Hong Yun first encounters Li Qingxiao while crossing Chaos with Zhen Yuanzi under the Earth Book’s protection. Impressed by Li’s effortless passage through the destructive currents, he initiates a friendly conversation and freely shares his cultivation insights. The three agree to travel to Purple Heaven Palace together 4.

During the journey, Li warns him not to surrender opportunities connected to his Dao or possible Sagehood. Hong Yun dismisses the danger, arguing that cultivators should support one another. Zhen Yuanzi takes the warning seriously and thanks Li on his friend’s behalf 5.

Retaining the Fifth Futon

Protected by Zhen Yuanzi, Hong Yun stumbles onto the fifth Purple-Gold Futon during the scramble for seats. Zhen Yuanzi then shields him from the other contenders 7.

Zhunti exploits Hong Yun’s sympathy for the suffering West and pressures him to surrender the seat. Although Hong Yun remembers Li’s warning, he begins to rise. Li forcibly presses him back onto the futon without injuring him; Hong Yun’s spiritual senses immediately register that he has narrowly escaped a catastrophic fate 8 9.

Zhunti’s subsequent attack is reflected into Kunpeng, allowing Zhunti to seize the sixth futon. Kunpeng blames Hong Yun and Li for his loss. Hongjun nevertheless confirms the altered seating order as permanent, preserving Hong Yun’s place for future lectures 9 10 11.

After experiencing the futon’s cultivation benefits, Hong Yun recognizes Li’s intervention as both life-saving and essential to his Dao path. He pledges to repay the favor even at the risk of his life 13.

Kunpeng’s First Ambush

On the return journey, Hong Yun initially feels guilty about Kunpeng’s lost opportunity. That sympathy ends when Kunpeng ambushes the group and injures Zhen Yuanzi: Hong Yun retaliates with his full cultivation and Soul-Scattering Crimson Sand 14 15.

He then joins Li and Zhen Yuanzi in sealing Kunpeng’s escape routes. Their combined assault forces Kunpeng to flee through Blood Escape. Afterward, Hong Yun invites Li to stay at Fire Cloud Cave or Five Villages Temple, and receives a communication talisman promising future assistance 16 17.

The Red Gourd and the Immortal Court

At Mount Buzhou, Hong Yun again hesitates to claim a destined opportunity. Li urges him to act and, together with Zhen Yuanzi, blocks interference while Hong Yun obtains the Ninety-Nine Soul-Scattering Red Gourd. Hong Yun subsequently supports Li’s claim to the remaining gourd-vine materials against Di Jun 21 22 23.

When Immortal Court envoys demand that he and Zhen Yuanzi join Dong Wang Gong, Hong Yun follows Li’s earlier counsel and refuses. The pair seal Five Villages Temple’s protective formation. After the Court’s destruction, Hong Yun thanks Li for helping them avoid its destructive karma 25 30.

Quasi-Saint Breakthrough

During Hongjun’s second lecture, Hong Yun’s hesitation obstructs his understanding of Good Corpse severance. Li reminds him that kindness must not become weakness, clearing his mental confusion and allowing his Good Corpse embryo to form 32 33.

Hong Yun completes the severance at Five Villages Temple using the Red Gourd and Li’s Mind-Seeing Nature Method. He and Zhen Yuanzi celebrate their successful advancement and strengthened Dao hearts 35.

Sage Position and Renewed Peril

At the third lecture, Hongjun accepts Hong Yun as a registered disciple and grants him the fifth strand of Primordial Purple Qi. This provides a Sage Position, but Hong Yun has not yet attained sainthood 41 45.

The award makes him a target for jealous great powers. He grows uneasy when Hongjun distributes major treasures to the other recipients but gives him none. Li reassures him, advises him against coveting karma-heavy weapons, and directs the Soul-Scattering Seal into his hands during the treasure scramble 42 43.

Once Hongjun merges with the Heavenly Dao and Purple Heaven Palace disappears, Kunpeng, Minghe, and other cultivators attack to seize Hong Yun’s Purple Qi. Zhen Yuanzi raises the Earth Book’s barrier, while Li moves in front of Hong Yun to intercept Kunpeng’s direct strike. The provided account ends before that clash is resolved 44 45.

Appearance

Hong Yun has a round face and a kindly expression 4.

  • Clothing: Crimson Daoist robes 4 9.
  • Cultivation manifestations: Rising crimson clouds surround him during enlightenment; his soul-scattering techniques produce scarlet sand 11 15 32.
  • Good Corpse incarnation: Appears as a crimson-robed figure emerging from the Red Gourd 35.

Personality

Hong Yun is warm, hospitable, and unusually unguarded. He approaches strangers readily, shares Dao insights without reservation, and initially treats yielding valuable opportunities as a natural expression of mutual support 4 5.

His compassion makes him vulnerable to manipulation. Zhunti’s theatrical distress nearly persuades him to abandon the fifth futon, and he initially considers Kunpeng’s resentment understandable. Nevertheless, injury to Zhen Yuanzi provokes genuine anger and decisive retaliation 8 14 15.

His development centers on retaining kindness while gaining resolve. He learns to refuse coercive recruitment, claim treasures suited to his path, and distinguish compassion from weakness. His gratitude toward Li becomes a sincere commitment to friendship and repayment 13 22 25 32.

Abilities & Skills

Nine Heavens Soul-Scattering Crimson Sand

Hong Yun draws upon his Innate Crimson Cloud Origin to transform vast crimson clouds into soul-attacking sand 15.

  • Each grain combines innate fire essence with primordial-spirit baleful qi, specifically harming a cultivator’s primordial spirit 15.
  • He unleashes it at full strength after Kunpeng injures Zhen Yuanzi 15.
  • Limitation: Kunpeng evades the sandstorm with his superior speed 15.

Crimson Cloud Net

Hong Yun uses a spirit-disrupting crimson cloud net during the coordinated counterattack against Kunpeng 16.

  • Complements Li’s World-Cleansing Sword Rays and Zhen Yuanzi’s Earth Book gravity to seal escape routes 16.
  • The combined trap forces Kunpeng to sacrifice blood essence and cultivation to escape 16.

Mind-Seeing Nature Method and Good Corpse Severance

Li Qingxiao’s method helps Hong Yun clarify his original nature and overcome indecision 32 35.

  • Clears distracting thoughts that obstruct his Good Corpse cultivation 32 33.
  • Enables him to anchor the completed incarnation in the Red Gourd and enter Early Quasi-Saint 35.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Kunpeng — Vindictive enemy who blames him for losing the sixth futon. Ambushes him after the first lecture and later attempts to extract his Purple Qi by force 10 15 45.
  • Minghe — Leads the later assault alongside Kunpeng, blocking Hong Yun’s retreat with a blood river 45.
  • Di Jun and Taiyi — Covet his Sage Position. Rather than attack first, they wait for other assailants to test and weaken his protectors 42 45.
