History

Founding and early expansion

The Heavenly Dao Sect began on a barren hill with only a dilapidated thatched hut. Its initial system classification was zero-star, with Su Bai as its sole member and a territorial radius of one hundred meters. Its true nature was revealed when Su Bai entered its territory, demonstrated overwhelming power, accepted Zhuge Feng as his eldest disciple, and upgraded the sect into a one-star institution. 1 4

The sect rapidly became known for accepting disciples on the basis of will and loyalty rather than aptitude alone. Su Bai specifically stated that even a person with a Mortal Body could achieve greatness under the sect’s guidance, a principle embodied by Ye Qingyao’s eventual advancement. 26 130

Xiao Lingxi and Xiao Yan followed Zhuge Feng as Su Bai’s early personal disciples. When Xiao Yan formally became the third personal disciple, Su Bai explained that food and lodging were free and sent him to the Immortal Arts Pavilion to investigate his inability to cultivate. Xiao Xier, who had accompanied him without joining the sect, was prohibited from entering the pavilion. 15

Its reputation initially spread through its conflicts with the Jade Spirit Sect and Lingxiao Sect. After Su Bai destroyed Lingxiao Sect elders and disciples, observers began treating Heavenly Dao Sect as a Nascent Soul-level hegemon rather than an obscure mountain sect. 35

The sect’s upgrades physically transformed its surroundings. By the three-star upgrade, its formerly nameless hill had become Heavenly Dao Mountain, several thousand meters high, with expanded pavilions, Heavenly Dao Hall, organized disciple residences, and a flourishing landscape supported by three Low-Grade Spirit Veins. 65

Rise in Southern Ridge

The sect paired cultivation resources with unusually generous recruitment policies: free admission, cultivation methods, food, lodging, a monthly payment of thirty taels of silver, and advancement rewards. These policies earned it broad support among commoners across Cloudwater City and the wider empire. 56

After defeating the Lingxiao Sect, the sect’s influence surpassed its former rival’s. It absorbed prisoners into mine labor, drew applicants from rival sects, and became a dominant power in Great Zhao. 89 110

Its recruitment also transformed Cloudwater City. As official disciple numbers surpassed one hundred thousand, the city’s population increased from approximately one million to five million, driven by people attracted by the sect’s reputation. 91

Great Zhao later pledged itself to the Heavenly Dao Sect, making the kingdom’s population subjects of the sect. 110

When Great Jin and six kingdoms invaded Great Zhao with more than four million soldiers, Su Bai assembled the sect’s more than three hundred thousand Qi Refining disciples to defend their families, the kingdom, and the sect. The disciples gathered on the Floating Island within the time required to burn a stick of incense. 110

Zhuge Feng subsequently became the sect’s first Golden Core expert after surviving the Four-Nine Minor Heavenly Tribulation. With his assistance, the sect subdued every force in Southern Ridge and achieved its first grand unification in thousands of years. Disciples remained throughout the six kingdoms to establish new rules, promote education, and supervise surrendered factions. 124

Continental power

The sect won first place at the Southern Mystic Province Immortal Alliance Assembly, publicly establishing itself as a force capable of standing against the Heavenly Palace. Its victory encouraged numerous factions to leave the Immortal Alliance and seek admission. 251

During the assembly, the Heavenly Palace introduced the similarly named Dao Heaven Sect, whose concealed members included its true disciples. The Heavenly Dao Sect’s disciples ultimately defeated all ten opposing geniuses in fatal matches, demonstrating both their current strength and future potential. Chen Hao and several Blackbird Sect disciples also joined after passing the Heavenly Ladder. 200 211 221 250

It subsequently expanded through the Four Mystic Provinces and the Spirit Mystic Domain. Its disciples defeated or accepted the surrender of hostile sects, rebuilt ruined regions, and used public faith—not simple military occupation—as the basis for defining sect territory. 269 311 312

Across the Four Mystic Provinces, the sect established free Immortal Arts halls, cultivation schools, and literacy schools. These initiatives addressed widespread illiteracy and made cultivation knowledge accessible to people previously excluded by its cost. 286

Following its war with the Heavenly Palace and allied Demon Race forces, the sect seized the Heaven, Earth, and Yellow Mystic Domains. It thereby controlled eight of the Human Race’s Nine Provinces, leaving Central Province as the principal territory outside its rule. 334

The decisive campaign in Central Province brought together 508 ascenders, more than twenty of the sect’s Heavenly Venerables, and over thirty Heavenly Venerables from allied divine beast clans. After unifying the continent, the sect reached seven-star status with twenty-three million members. 354 364

Expansion beyond the original world

The Heavenly Dao Sect established its first off-world branch after saving a continent from demons and fiends. Moon God Palace submitted, Elder Yue’e became a core elder, and the branch offered free Immortal Arts; those who passed the Heavenly Ladder could become official disciples of the main sect. 386

Su Bai subsequently demanded that the Northern Realm’s nine great Lineages transfer all ascenders and ascender miners to the sect for one thousand years, promising later compensation in Immortal Crystals. The sect’s growing ascender population became a major source of strength because their earlier cultivation had been constrained by the levels of their original worlds rather than by their potential. 403 411 412

During the thousand-year Golden Age, the sect expanded to more than ten billion disciples across over 100,000 worlds and launched its first major Immortal Realm expedition against the Zhao Clan Realm. Su Bai ordered the expedition to protect civilians and non-aggressors, spare those who surrendered, and kill only those who resisted. 455

The Zhao Clan Realm became recognized sect territory in the campaign’s tenth year. Continued expeditions brought sixteen realms under its influence within a century, while oppressed lineages sought refuge under its policies of freedom, equality, peace, and friendship. 456 457

The Greenleaf Immortal Sect attempted to destroy this rising rival with more than twenty Profound Immortals, over five hundred True Immortals, and approximately three million Celestial Immortals. Su Bai destroyed its army, and Greenwild Golden Immortal later rallied surviving Greenleaf disciples and rival lineages into another coalition. The struggle culminated in the unification of the Northern Spirit Region and the sect’s advancement to nine-star status. 457 480 486

After further campaigns, the Heavenly Dao Sect unified the Heavenly Sword Immortal Domain. Su Bai received one hundred Immortal Ascension Trees and planted them in the Third Layer of the Spacetime Tower, then set a thousand-year deadline to destroy the Hunter Alliance and eliminate its Immortal Lord-tier hunters. 542

During this period of accelerated cultivation, the sect’s True Immortal ranks exceeded two million, several personal disciples became Immortal Lords, and branches spread across ninety-nine Immortal Domains. Su Bai completed his own advancement to Immortal Venerable as the thousand-year deadline approached. 600

Su Bai later used the World Tree and Mountains and Rivers Immortal Map to merge millions of worlds into the Lesser Immortal Realm. The former Heavenly Sword Immortal Domain was renamed the Heavenly Dao Immortal Domain and became the sect’s foundation. 601

Ninth Layer campaign

In the ninth layer of the Immortal Realm, Su Bai established a Heavenly Dao Sect centered on free Immortal Arts and recruitment through the Heavenly Ladder. Yun Xuan became its first elder. 952 953

The new institution began on Little Wilderness Mountain beside Blackwater City, deliberately using humble thatched huts rather than luxurious palaces. Its recruitment stele advertised one hundred thousand volumes of Immortal Arts, admission without wealth or lineage requirements, and severe penalties for oppression, betrayal, and abuse of fellow disciples. 953

The sect’s first disciple in that realm, Erhu—renamed Su Hu—was accepted after redirecting his desire for personal vengeance toward ending systemic oppression. Su Bai declared that the sect taught not only Immortal Arts, but the World-Creation Method. 955

Its first batch consisted of thirty-six disciples drawn from the lowest levels of society. All passed the Heavenly Ladder’s sixty-step test, and they successfully drew in qi overnight. Within thirty-six days, the sect had recruited thirty thousand new disciples. 956 957 964

Over centuries, twenty-two branches united, destroyed or subdued oppressive powers, abolished taxes on ordinary people, enforced minimum wages and price controls, and prohibited violence and abuse. 970 971

The campaign began with the destruction of the Black Bull Sect and Blackwater City, while Lu Ming’s branch defeated the Azure God Sect. The first wave destroyed thirty evil True Immortal powers. Remote testing sites allowed people unable to travel to a branch to seek admission, and the sect constructed cultivation facilities and a civil administration on the former Blackwater City’s ruins. 970

Each branch exceeded one million disciples within a year, ten million within ten years, and one billion within eighty years. Su Hu, Lu Ming, and other leading disciples advanced through the True Immortal and Profound Immortal realms while defeating repeated encirclement campaigns. In the fifth century, Su Hu and Lu Ming joined forces to kill a Golden Immortal ancestor and unite their branches. 970

After six hundred years of war, Su Bai opened the passage to the Eighth Layer. The sect left the Road to Heaven unrestricted rather than imposing new checkpoints, and its disciples spent another four hundred years cultivating, equivalent to four hundred thousand years inside the Spacetime Tower. Its Eternal Immortal Realm membership then exceeded twenty billion. 976 977

The sect built a new Heavenly Dao City on the Eighth Layer, linking it to the Ninth Layer. It later spent five years conquering the Fourth Layer, followed by ten years of recovery and cultivation, before sweeping the Third Layer in three months. Seven layers of the Ninefold Firmament then flew its banners, and oppressed beings, Rogue Cultivators, and other factions joined or pledged allegiance. 984 995

The sect ultimately destroyed Heaven Gate, unified the Ninefold Firmament, and proclaimed that all beings had the right to pursue freedom and cultivate immortality. 1041

Su Bai responded to fears that he would become another oppressor by creating a Heavenly Dao Edict. The edict made fairness, equality, freedom, protection of the people, and prohibitions against abuse into laws of the Ninefold Firmament. 1041

Celestial Court confrontation

After the Ninefold Firmament campaign, Zhuge Feng and other disciples appeared before the Heavenly Dao Ranking. Despite encounters with prominent factions, they maintained that they had no need to join the Celestial Court or any other faction because they already had their master and sect. 1054

In a subsequent confrontation, the Heavenly Dao Sect army fought the Eighth Divine General’s Heavenly Soldiers and Heavenly Generals inside his spiritual world. Xiao Yan and Zhuge Feng led the assault, using the Heavenly Dao Formation and their army’s coordination to shatter the Heavenly Net Formation. The army crushed the remaining troops, collapsed the spiritual world, and left the Eighth Divine General bleeding and defeated. 1084 1085

Human Realm and Primordial Battlefield

At a later thousand-year deadline, more than thirty billion Golden Immortals assembled on Heavenly Dao Peak: over twenty billion from the Heavenly Dao Sect and another ten billion from affiliated forces. They gathered beneath Su Bai, who was identified as the ruler of the Human Realm. 1315

Gu Qingping and Yun Xuan subsequently led more than one thousand Heavenly Dao Sect disciples into the Primordial Battlefield to confront seven million Immortal Kings and the Five-Realm Coalition. Su Bai entrusted Gu Qingping and Yun Xuan with a cultivation technique before their departure and instructed the disciples to return alive. Yun Xuan declared her intention to carve a path for Su Bai, the sect, and the Human Realm. 1332

Recruitment and cultivation

This mechanism also applies beyond the original continent. More than two-thirds of the surviving population’s support made the Moon God Palace’s continent sect territory, while the Zhao Clan Realm became part of the Unbeatable Domain after popular faith crossed the required threshold. 386 456

Sect identity and discipline

The sect emphasizes a familial identity among its disciples. Xiao Lingxi described it as their household when welcoming Ye Qingyao, and later disciples explained their continued campaign against Heaven Gate by calling the sect their home. 26 995

In the Ninth Layer, Su Bai taught that the strong should direct their blades against stronger oppressors rather than torment those unable to resist. He also explained that the sect existed to teach cultivation, not to provide luxury or encourage displays of wealth. 953 956

Organization

Military coordination

The sect organizes disciples into preassigned units to enable rapid mobilization. During its continental campaigns, ten disciples formed a small group led by a Foundation Establishment cultivator, while one hundred formed a large group led by a Golden Core cultivator. Their shared faith and prior organization allowed them to deploy before the Heavenly Palace despite receiving their orders later. 259

Its battlefield coordination extends beyond formal units. During the war with the Heavenly Palace and Demon Race, eight hundred sect Venerables cooperated with roughly one thousand divine beast Venerables to overwhelm an enemy approximately five times their combined number. Powerful disciples conducted decapitation strikes or reinforced struggling allied formations to reduce casualties. 332

Heavenly Dao Battle Formation

The formation supports both attack and defense and can change configurations rapidly. Its effectiveness also depends on the disciples’ longstanding cooperation and heartfelt tacit understanding rather than merely forcing combatants together through an array.
