Background / History

Luffy had already left Foosha Village to pursue piracy when Garp brought Admiral White Dove Roya to visit. Garp hoped Roya could train Luffy as a Marine instead, but Luffy chose to sail freely. 160 168

Soon after setting out, Luffy hid inside a wine barrel aboard Alvida’s ship and met Koby. He was initially more concerned with finding food than Alvida or the danger around him. 172 173

His first battle against Alvida exposed the limits of his early strength. His rubber body let him evade blunt attacks and stretch his limbs, but Alvida’s spiked club inflicted severe cuts and puncture wounds. Roya ultimately rescued Luffy and Koby, healed Luffy’s injuries, and later left them on an East Blue island with a warning to grow stronger. 173 176 180
