Appearance
Akainu wears a dark red suit, a military cap, and a Justice cape when acting at Marineford. 20
- Stern, severe expression. 20 22
- Often surrounded by or attacks with surging magma. 4 24
- Returns from Ohara covered in severe burns and festering injuries. 46 47
- His Justice coat is stained with blood after his extended battle against Kaido. 261
Personality
Akainu is stern, combative, and intensely devoted to an uncompromising interpretation of Marine justice. He considers enemies of the Marines—particularly Ohara and those protecting it—to be evil that must be purged, and argues that the Navy must never retreat. 20 43 44
His pride and temper repeatedly override strategy. He ignores Sengoku's limited reconnaissance order at Ohara, intensifies the bombardment, refuses a withdrawal order, and risks his life rather than concede defeat. 43 44 45 His humiliation at Roya's hands becomes a major source of motivation, driving his training and determination to prove himself. 25 43 45
Although he remains ruthless toward pirates and other forces he considers evil, Akainu later develops greater control over his temper. During the Wano expedition, he confronts Kaido without being provoked into losing focus and fights with disciplined determination. 260
Akainu is also ambitious within the Marines. As leader of the Hawk Faction, he seeks military achievements and advancement, viewing major operations as opportunities to strengthen his political position and demonstrate the superiority of his justice. 147 256
Abilities & Skills
Magma-Magma Fruit
Akainu wields a magma-based Devil Fruit that grants devastating offensive power and allows him to form and launch molten attacks.
- Meigō — Fires a powerful magma strike; used against Roya's Wood Release barrier and Weevil. 4 44
- Great Eruption — Creates a massive volcanic magma fist capable of destroying several of Roya's phantoms at once. 24
- Dog Bite Crimson Lotus — Forms magma canine heads that bite and burn targets. 24 44
- Meteor Volcano — Launches enormous lava fists; its awakened form affects the surrounding clouds and blankets Ohara in falling magma. 4 5 45
- His magma could burn holes into Weevil's body, but Weevil's regeneration restored the damage within seconds. 44
- His strengthened Meigō is powerful enough to threaten Roya's companions and to inflict severe burns on Kaido during their battle in Wano. 143 260 261
- Uses Great Eruption at close range against Kaido, repeatedly erupting magma into Kaido's chest. 260
Devil Fruit Awakening
Akainu awakens his Devil Fruit during his second assault on Ohara.
- Alters the weather by turning clouds into fiery masses. 45
- Produces countless giant lava fists across a wide area. 45
- Remains insufficient against Roya's flaming sword slash, which absorbs the magma attacks as fuel. 46
- Later channels his awakened magma through Meigō, causing the magma around his body to boil and ignite at an even more extreme temperature. 260
Combat Ability
Akainu is a high-ranking Marine combatant capable of rapidly analyzing opponents and sustaining prolonged combat.
- Quickly identifies and destroys Roya's Five-Turn Illusion during their promotion match. 24
- Uses Observation Haki to partially elementalize in advance of Weevil's attack. 44
- Endures Roya's Modified Rokuogan, Phantom Susanoo, and a later Ryujin Jakka slash, though each encounter leaves him severely injured. 25 46
- Combines Armament Haki with Tekkai to block one of Kaido's Haki-coated club strikes, though the impact still makes him cough blood. 260
- Forces Kaido to transform into Divine Dragon Form and burns Kaido's Dragon Claw into charcoal-like flesh during their full-power clash. 261
- Can repeatedly use Meteor Volcano in large-scale defensive operations, though prolonged use significantly drains his stamina. 147
Story Role / Major Arcs
Buster Call at Ohara
Akainu participates in the Buster Call against Ohara alongside Aokiji. His attacks, including Meteor Volcano and Meigō, fail to breach Roya's Wood Release barrier. 4 He then joins Aokiji and three vice admirals in attempting to stop Roya's flaming slash, but their combined attacks are consumed; Akainu is severely injured and knocked unconscious. 5
Mary Geoise Crisis
When Roya's floating island falls toward Mary Geoise, Akainu joins Kizaru in attempting to destroy it with Meteor Volcano. Their combined efforts prove inadequate before Imu annihilates the island. 14
Marineford Promotion Tournament
Akainu openly dismisses Roya as an unqualified outsider and warns him against facing him in the tournament. 20 22 During their match, he efficiently destroys Roya's illusions and appears to dominate the opening exchange. 24 Roya then withstands his magma with peak Armament Haki, strikes him with Modified Rokuogan, and crushes him into the training ground with Phantom Susanoo, leaving Akainu unconscious. 25
Second Ohara Operation
Sengoku assigns Akainu to investigate Ohara and destroy it only if its defenses prove weak. Akainu accepts partly to erase the shame of his earlier defeat. 43 He disregards the reconnaissance order, bombards the island, and clashes with the cloaked Weevil. 44
Unable to overcome Weevil's regeneration, Akainu refuses Sengoku's withdrawal order and reveals his Devil Fruit Awakening. 45 He is ultimately defeated by a cloaked Roya's Ryujin Jakka slash, which overwhelms his awakened magma attack. 46
Return to Marineford
Akainu washes ashore gravely injured after the battle. Roya finds and treats him, though Akainu does not realize that Roya was the enemy who defeated him. 46 He returns to Marineford with Roya and is immediately taken for medical care; Sengoku intends to punish him after his recovery. 47
Water City Crisis
Akainu joins Kizaru and CP9 at Water City to confront the Dawn-and-Dusk Bird Organization. He rejects Roya's proposal for a peaceful withdrawal and attacks Robin and the others with an enhanced Meigō, forcing Roya to intervene. 143
When Roya attempts to leave to prepare for an impending tsunami, Akainu launches another magma-covered charge in an effort to stop him. Roya restrains him with Rikujōkōrō and departs, leaving Akainu unable to close the gap between them. 143 144
Akainu later works with Kizaru and CP9 to resist the first tsunami, repeatedly deploying Meteor Volcano. However, he and the other Marines withdraw when an even larger wave appears beyond their ability to stop, severely damaging the Navy's public standing. 147 149
Kaido's Assault on Marineford
After Kaido attacks Marineford to rescue Drought Jack, Akainu returns alongside Roya and Kizaru. He joins the combined assault on Kaido, striking the Emperor with Meigō while Garp, Sengoku, Kizaru, Momousagi, Ain, Luo Lan, and Stella attack in coordination. 149 151
Although Akainu contributes to driving Kaido away, Roya later judges that he and Kizaru have not yet reached the level of strength they will eventually attain. 152
Summit War
During the war surrounding Ace's execution, Akainu confronts Weevil again after becoming enraged by Weevil's seemingly dismissive response. Their fight is so destructive that other combatants avoid its vicinity. 248
Akainu continues to regard every pirate and independent organization as evil, placing him in direct ideological opposition to the Dawn-and-Dusk Bird Organization. 248
Wano Expedition
Fleet Admiral Roya appoints Akainu commander of a fifteen-warship expedition against Kaido in Wano Country. Akainu eagerly accepts the opportunity to fight pirates, gain military merit, and confront Kaido directly. 256
In Wano, Akainu battles Kaido with strengthened magma techniques, Armament Haki, Tekkai, Great Eruption, and his awakened Meigō. He severely burns Kaido and forces him into Divine Dragon Form, but eventually exhausts himself during the prolonged clash and falls into a coma. 260 261
Momousagi, Stella, Luo Lan, Perona, and Ain subsequently attack the weakened Kaido, forcing him to flee after Ain regresses him to childhood. 261
Relationships
- Roya — Repeated adversary. Akainu initially belittles him, loses decisively in the promotion tournament, and is defeated again during the Ohara operation. Roya later secretly saves his life. 20 25 46 As Fleet Admiral, Roya later entrusts Akainu with command of the Wano expedition against Kaido, despite Akainu's continued ambition and ideological rigidity. 256
- Sengoku — Former Fleet Admiral and superior officer. Sengoku assigns Akainu to investigate Ohara, later orders him to withdraw, and plans to discipline him for insubordination. 43 45 47 The Five Elders later consider Akainu an unsuitable successor because of his radical personality. 254
- Aokiji — Fellow Marine officer; they jointly attack Roya during the first Buster Call and are defeated by the same slash. 4 5 Akainu regards Aokiji as a political rival within the Marines and considers Sengoku overly protective of him. 147
- Kizaru — Fellow Marine officer; assists Akainu in trying to destroy Roya's falling island above Mary Geoise. 14 They later cooperate during the Water City tsunami crisis and Kaido's attack on Marineford. 147 151
- Weevil — Opponent during the second Ohara operation. Akainu's magma wounds Weevil but cannot overcome his regeneration or physical strength. 44 45 They clash again during the Summit War. 248
- Kaido — Major opponent during the Wano expedition. Akainu fights Kaido to exhaustion, severely burning him but ultimately collapsing before Momousagi's forces continue the attack. 260 261
- Momousagi — Fellow Marine officer assigned by Roya to support Akainu's Wano expedition. She attacks Kaido after Akainu falls unconscious. 256 261
- Spandam — Rescues Akainu and Aokiji after their defeat in the Buster Call, while insulting them as dead weight. 5
- Marine Colonel at Ohara — Invokes Sengoku's authority to order Akainu's withdrawal after Akainu threatens retreating Marines. 45
