Background
Kuina was a devoted young swordswoman from Shimotsuki Village whose ambition was cut short by her death. Her lingering soul remained burdened by resentment and regret: she still wanted to become the world’s greatest swordsman, but had accepted her father Koushirou’s belief that a woman’s body would ultimately prevent her from reaching that height 115.
Roya found her neglected grave and used the one-use Soul-Returning Sword to summon her spirit. He challenged her resignation, gave her a Supreme Grade Blade named Life-Ending, and urged her to prove through her own efforts that women could stand at the summit of swordsmanship. Kuina reclaimed her dream and was restored to life with her memories, ambition, and a new body intact 115.
After joining Dawn-and-Dusk Bird, Kuina returned to Isshin Dojo to confront Koushirou and sever her attachment to her former life. Though she could predict his movements from childhood familiarity, she acknowledged that he remained stronger than her. She nevertheless reaffirmed her determination to demonstrate that a woman could become the strongest swordsman 116.
Roya became Kuina’s master and personally trained her aboard Noah’s Ark. Her progress accelerated dramatically, aided by Roya’s medical treatment and her unusual insight into death. She later became one of Dawn-and-Dusk Bird’s foremost combatants and Paradise’s appointed guardian 117 169 225.
Appearance
Kuina is a young swordswoman who commonly travels in a cloak and carries a sword close at hand. Her presence is usually distant and intimidating, but she becomes visibly softer around Roya 132 133.
- Often wears a white cloak decorated with black patterns inspired by yin-yang imagery 139.
- Has beautiful eyes and a youthful voice despite her overwhelming swordsmanship 116 215.
- Usually keeps her face concealed beneath a hood when operating alongside Dawn-and-Dusk Bird 171.
- Her black Death Sword Intent gives observers the impression of a drawn blade or an approaching Grim Reaper 171 248.
Personality
Kuina is intensely determined, disciplined, and direct. Her resurrection left her unwilling to accept the limits once imposed on her by others; having died once, she believes she has nothing left to fear in pursuing strength 115.
She is reserved with strangers and often dismissive toward opponents she considers weak. This is particularly evident in her treatment of Zoro, whom she rejects as someone from her past and repeatedly tells that he is too weak to understand her current swordsmanship 169 171 172.
Around Roya, Kuina is loyal, affectionate, and readily embarrassed by his teasing. She calls him “Master,” considers herself his disciple, and repeatedly vows to become the sharpest sword in his hand 117 169 172. Her loyalty is self-professed: she sees Roya as the person who gave her a second life and the chance to pursue her future 115 116.
Abilities & Skills
Supreme-Grade Swordsmanship
Kuina is an elite swordswoman who rose from the initial Great Swordsman realm to the peak of the Supreme Great Swordsman stage in only a few months 117 169 215.
- Defeated an Ink-Logia pirate captain with a single Armament Haki-infused slash 170.
- Can split the sea, kill Sea Kings, and destroy incoming cannonballs with controlled Sword Energy 173 176 179.
- Overpowered Momousagi in swordsmanship, physical ability, and sword intent while deliberately avoiding a lethal strike 215 216.
- Was recognized by Mihawk as a peak-stage Supreme Great Swordsman and exchanged attacks with his black blade, Yoru 248.
Death Sword Intent
Kuina’s distinctive black Sword Intent and Death Sword Energy stem from her experience of dying once. The aura is described as dense, chilling, and capable of instilling fear even in seasoned observers 169 171 248.
- Her sword energy blackens and withers Robin’s manifested Flower-Flower Fruit arms after cutting through them 132.
- Uses the intent to overwhelm conventional Sword Energy, including Momousagi’s strongest technique 216.
- Its intensity can cause nearby soldiers to faint and led Mihawk to recognize that it was more than ordinary Conqueror’s Haki-infused sword intent 248.
- Kuina herself states that acquiring this kind of Sword Intent requires “dying once” 248.
Haki and Six Powers
Kuina combines swordsmanship with advanced combat techniques.
- Uses Armament Haki to strike Logia users’ true bodies 170.
- Uses Geppo to maneuver and fight in midair 132 215.
- Her aura resembles Conqueror’s Haki strongly enough to make Koby faint, though its exact nature is not confirmed 176.
Sword Techniques
- Draw-and-Cut — A fast-draw strike used to defeat the Ink Captain and nonlethally cut away Momousagi’s clothing and shoulder cape 170 216.
- Red Spider Lily—First Caress — A self-created technique that releases a gale saturated with Death Sword Intent 216.
- Sword Energy Barrage — Produces numerous airborne slashes capable of beheading groups of pirates or intercepting cannon fire 171 173.
Equipment
- Doom — A Supreme Grade Blade wielded by Kuina during her later journeys and battles 169 176.
- Life-Ending — A Supreme Grade Blade given to Kuina by Roya upon her resurrection 115.
- White cloak — Her preferred travel attire; marked with black yin-yang-like patterns 139.
Relationships
- Roya — Rescuer, master, and the person responsible for her revival. Kuina serves him with absolute loyalty and calls herself his sharpest sword 115 117 172.
- Koushirou — Her father and former dojo master. Kuina returns to challenge him after her resurrection, seeking to move beyond the belief that women cannot become the strongest swordsmen 115 116.
- Roronoa Zoro — Former childhood rival. Kuina rejects his attempt to preserve their shared dream, declares them strangers, and later defeats him in their 2,002nd duel 171 172.
- Nico Robin — Initially clashes with Robin as part of Roya’s surprise visit to Ohara; afterward, Kuina introduces herself as Roya’s disciple 132 133.
- Momousagi — A rival swordswoman whom Kuina decisively defeats during Roya’s staged battle, forcing Momousagi to reflect on her own path 215 216.
- Luo Lan — A powerful rival who clashes with Kuina using Azure Phoenix flames. Their duel ends when ordered to stop, leaving both with mutual respect 216 217.
- Dracule Mihawk — Recognizes Kuina’s peak-stage swordsmanship and challenges her during the Marineford conflict 248.
