Background

Zhang Chulan is a college student caught in the conflicts surrounding the Eight Extraordinary Skills and his grandfather Zhang Xilin—also known as Zhang Huaiyi. When Lin Xian arrives in the world of The Outcast, Zhang is tied up and unable to use his Golden Light Spell because Liu Yanyan’s gu insect has blocked his meridians. Even in that position, he warns Lin Xian of Xia He’s incoming attack. 11

Lin Xian claims an old connection to Zhang Huaiyi and treats Zhang with a mixture of ridicule and protection. He entrusts Zhang to Feng Baobao so that she can remove the gu insect, then insists that Zhang should trust her as he trusts his own grandfather. 12

After Liu Yanyan is captured, Lin Xian orders Zhang to retrieve his grandfather’s corpse and supervise the proper reburial of every grave Liu disturbed. The gesture strengthens Zhang’s belief that Lin Xian truly knew Zhang Huaiyi. 17

At Feng Zhenghao’s invitation, Zhang becomes involved with the World Association. Feng attempts to recruit him through the historic bond between Feng Tianyang and Zhang Xilin, as well as a proposed relationship with Feng Shayan. 19 Zhang later becomes closely aligned with the Feng family and the World Association during the Wang Family’s downfall. 26

Zhang is shamelessly pragmatic when survival is at stake. While tied up by enemies, he introduces himself as a good citizen and promises repayment if rescued; when Lin Xian displays overwhelming strength, he immediately addresses him as “Senior,” “Patriarch,” and “Grandpa.” 11 12 He readily seeks protection from stronger figures, later attaching himself to Zhang Zhiwei after Lin Xian’s supposed ascension. 19 38

His cowardice and greed do not define his core values. When offered Qi-State Origin-Flow, Zhang initially refuses because the technique brought danger to his grandfather and family. He states plainly that, between his family and the Eight Extraordinary Skill, he chooses his family. 19 He also responds deeply to Lin Xian’s order that Liu Yanyan properly rebury the dead, feeling that someone has finally considered his perspective. 17

Zhang is intelligent enough to recognize political manipulation and social cruelty. He understands that the Wang Family’s loss of wealth and status is a punishment more psychologically devastating than simple death, even while publicly treating the campaign against them as coincidence. 26
