Ch. 1Li Wei Keynes
Chapter Summary: Li Wei Keynes
- Setting and atmosphere: Goldfinch District near Wool’s Orphanage is a poverty-stricken London slum filled with gang members, vagrants, and struggling laborers. It is haunted by a terrifying legend about the ghost of an abused boy who supposedly returned from hell and slaughtered numerous gang thugs.
Plot events
Li Wei Keynes, an eleven-year-old orphan, runs an ice-cream cart in the district to help support himself and the other children at the orphanage. After working late into the night, he begins pushing his cart home. A drunken thug who had been watching his stall follows him with a dagger and demands his earnings. Li Wei refuses to stop and instead runs ahead. When the thug attempts to chase him, an invisible force trips him, lifts him into the air, and repeatedly smashes him against a wall. Li Wei calmly leaves the alley, pretending not to notice the attack, and jokingly suggests that the thug should have known better than to wander at night because of the local ghost legend.
Character development
Li Wei is established as practical, hardworking, resourceful, and unusually mature for his age. He has used his past-life knowledge and negotiation skills to obtain funding from the orphanage and create a profitable food business. Although outwardly ordinary, he possesses mysterious supernatural abilities, apparently connected to the “Goldfinch Street ghost.” His calm response to danger shows his confidence and ruthlessness, while his dream of expanding Celestial cuisine reveals ambition and optimism.
Character interactions
Li Wei interacts briefly and professionally with customers while working. His conflict with the thug highlights the stark contrast between the thug’s aggression and Li Wei’s composure. Li Wei does not directly confront or even acknowledge the attacker, allowing his invisible power to punish him while maintaining the appearance of innocence.
Significant themes
The chapter explores survival amid poverty, the exploitation and vulnerability of orphans, and the contrast between public rumor and hidden reality. It also introduces the theme of concealed power: the feared ghost legend may actually be connected to Li Wei himself. His entrepreneurial ambitions and memories of the Celestial Empire further emphasize self-reliance, cultural identity, and the desire to rise above harsh circumstances.
