Background and History

Wanda and her brother Quicksilver lost their parents to a bomb that struck their Sokovian home on Wanda’s birthday. Hydra later held the siblings in a laboratory for more than a decade. After Doctor Strange rescued Wanda, he arranged for Agatha Harkness to teach her Chaos Magic. Wanda trusted Strange, but during the fight against Thanos he injured her and took back the Darkhold in an attempt to save the universe 80 88 110 119.

Thanos spared Wanda. She refused to return to Blue Star, telling him she wanted to escape its wars, experiments and betrayals. He offered to adopt and protect her, while also recognizing her potential as an ally. Wanda accepted, and he ordered Deep Blue to give her the same treatment as Nebula 88.

Thanos soon put Wanda in charge of Blue Star’s surrender. She treated requests for more time as resistance, killing the officials who raised them. She later broke Wakanda’s Vibranium shield and led the assault that ended its resistance 92 94. In Sokovia, she initially endured insults and stones from former neighbors, but an explosion revived memories of her parents’ deaths. Her Chaos Energy surged out of control; Thanos stopped her attack, then allowed her to order a purge 118 119.

When Quicksilver was killed during a battle on Blue Star, Wanda attacked the fighters she blamed until the strain overwhelmed her. Thanos healed her and used Time Reversal to restore her brother. He subsequently gave both siblings Divine Grace 142 143.

Wanda later crossed into another universe with an expeditionary force and conquered star systems as a birthday gift for Thanos. In a subsequent campaign, she encountered a starving population whose gratitude made her question their planned sacrifice. Their worship awakened her Probability Manipulation, but the Faith Power she absorbed corrupted her soul. Thanos painfully purged it; afterward, Wanda slaughtered believers and ordered their star system sacrificed 199 203 281 285 289.

Appearance

Wanda has long red hair and is repeatedly described wearing fitted red combat clothing. As the Scarlet Witch, she wears dark red leather and a circlet; during her period as a worshipped goddess, she adopts a wine-red robe and golden crown 94 142 197 285.

Wanda’s longing for safety and family grows out of her childhood losses and captivity. She is openly affectionate with Thanos and fiercely attached to Quicksilver, though her devotion to her father coexists with extreme violence toward those she sees as enemies 88 112 142 202.

She can be cautious in unfamiliar situations: she waits for repeated reports before entering another universe. She can also be playful and cruel, using a sweet manner to expose dissenters and treating captured TVA agents’ deaths as a game reminiscent of her childhood in the research facility 92 150 199. Her encounter with starving civilians briefly prompts compassion and an independent search for the value of their lives 281.
