Background / History

In a previous life, Lin Tian lived in the world of Hua Jianghu: Bad Guys. He learned the Supreme Sacred Heaven and Earth Technique from Li Keyong and acquired the Five Thunder Heavenly Heart Formula by having Zhang Xuanling’s teachings translated into plain language. Yuan Tiangang later killed him as an “anomaly,” after which he transmigrated to Douluo Continent 13.

Before his life in Hua Jianghu: Bad Guys, he had another life in which he knew the animated stories of both that world and Douluo. He died after being struck by a vehicle. In the Bad Guys world, he became an otherwise nonexistent son of Li Keyong and younger brother of Li Cunxu. Initially considered foolish and harmless, he received Li Keyong’s unreserved affection; his earlier memories returned a year before the story’s events were due to begin 13 15.

Anticipating the deaths of Li Keyong and Li Cunxu, Lin Tian sought powerful martial arts rather than spending time learning classical texts. He had Li Keyong explain the Supreme Sacred Heaven and Earth Technique in plain language with meridian diagrams. He then located Zhang Xuanling, won over Li Cunren, and used a promise to help Zhang Xuanling find his son to obtain the Five Thunder Heavenly Heart Formula. Li Cunren translated the formula for him and was subsequently sent with the Sorrow Organization to seize the Fire Spirit Mushroom. Yuan Tiangang arrived and killed Lin Tian before these plans could bear fruit 13.

Reborn as an orphan in Bamboo Ridge Village, Lin Tian began cultivating both techniques from a young age. He recorded illustrated versions in pinyin and sewed them into his clothing, ensuring that he would not forget the methods or suffer a cultivation deviation 13. His training gave him Innate Full Soul Power and two mutated martial souls: Heavenly Thunder Bamboo and Buddha’s Wrath Fire Lotus 13.

The village households collectively fed him during his childhood. From the age of two or three, he regularly left for the back mountain before dawn, returned around noon, and went out again until dusk. Although the villagers initially feared for his safety, his repeated success in bringing back pheasants and hares reassured them. His solitary habits and unusual competence instead made Lin Yuan suspect that he was another transmigrator 1.

Before enrolling at Nouding Academy, Lin Tian was already regarded as unusual for secretly training in the mountains, hunting successfully, and refusing Spirit Hall’s recruitment offer despite his exceptional innate talent 1.

Appearance

Lin Tian is described as extraordinarily handsome, with bright and spirited eyes 7.

  • Taller than Xiao Wu by nearly half a head during their first year at Nouding Academy 7.
  • Maintained a composed, confident bearing even while sparring or facing stronger social pressure 7 10.

Personality

Lin Tian was outwardly calm, modest, and socially capable. After effortlessly defeating Xiao Wu, he downplayed the victory by claiming Tang San could do the same; he also recognized Tang San’s concealed desire to rely on hidden weapons but chose not to expose him 7. He accepted Lin Yuan’s supplies because of his poverty, yet declined to abandon his Dorm Seven companions for a private dormitory 8.

He was ambitious and calculating beneath this friendly exterior. He deliberately befriended Tang San, rejected Yu Xiaogang’s offer of apprenticeship, and pursued a place alongside Tang San’s future rise to godhood 12 13. His affection for Xiao Wu was genuine, but it conflicted with his instinct for survival once he suspected Tang Hao’s identity and motives 12 13.

His plans also involved imitating Tang San’s original route to godhood and subtly turning Xiao Wu away from Tang San by hinting at Tang Hao’s identity. He concealed his personal dislike of Tang San and Yu Xiaogang to maintain useful relationships. Despite his apparent progress toward his goals, he experienced an unexplained sense of loss shortly before returning to Bamboo Ridge 13.

Lin Tian valued his image as a generous person. When Lin Yuan persuaded him to spare Xiao Chenyu by invoking Lin Kun’s position, he regarded the concession as repayment for the family’s kindness 10. His confidence in the protective value of sworn brotherhood nevertheless led him to overestimate Tang Hao’s restraint. Faced with imminent death, he abandoned his pride and offered to accept Tang San as his master in exchange for survival 14 15.

Abilities & Skills

Twin Martial Souls

Lin Tian possessed two martial souls, each altered by one of his inherited cultivation methods 13 14.

  • Heavenly Thunder Bamboo — Formed from his paternal bamboo martial soul after merging with the Five Thunder Heavenly Heart Formula.
    • Produces heavenly lightning.
    • Particularly effective against soul beasts with dark or evil attributes 13.
  • Buddha’s Wrath Fire Lotus — Formed from his maternal lotus martial soul after merging with the Supreme Sacred Heaven and Earth Technique.
    • Emits a distinctive blue aura and blue flames 12 13.
    • Lin Tian released the Lotus martial soul while cultivating to conceal the blue aura produced by his technique 12.

He concealed the existence of his second martial soul from his academy companions. Yu Xiaogang assured Tang San that Lin Tian possessed only one martial soul, while Lin Tian finally displayed both together when attempting to demonstrate his usefulness to Tang Hao 12 14.

Lotus Flying Blades

Lin Tian’s first soul skill divided his flame lotus into eight blue-flame blades 9.

  • Overwhelmed Xiao Chenyu after he activated his Wolf martial soul 9.
  • Could be restrained to avoid lethal injuries; Lin Tian initially used blunt edges and avoided vital areas 9.
  • He could recall the blades at will after ending the fight 10.

Five Thunder Heavenly Heart Formula

One of Lin Tian’s two inherited cultivation arts, preserved in pinyin within his clothing 13 16.

  • Mutated his bamboo martial soul into Heavenly Thunder Bamboo 13.
  • Greatly enhanced his speed when used alongside the Supreme Sacred Heaven and Earth Technique 14.
  • Its lightning was especially suited to combating dark- and evil-attributed soul beasts 13.
  • His written version included plain-language explanations, cultivation insights, and records of mistaken approaches, allowing Lin Yuan to begin learning it after his death 17.

Supreme Sacred Heaven and Earth Technique

A body-tempering, fire-attributed cultivation art inherited from Lin Tian’s prior life 13 16.

  • Mutated his lotus martial soul into the blue-flamed Buddha’s Wrath Fire Lotus 13.
  • Contributed to his extreme movement speed and physical capability 14.
  • Its conspicuous blue aura forced Lin Tian to conceal his training by keeping his Lotus martial soul manifested 12.
  • Described as supremely yang and domineering, with a strong emphasis on body tempering. Its higher realms permit the outward release of colorless or blue energy flames and combine offensive and defensive capabilities 16.

Lin Tian intended to combine the two cultivation arts during his previous life, but had never cultivated either to its highest realm before recording them in Douluo 13.

Close-Quarters Combat

Lin Tian consistently outperformed his peers in direct combat.

  • Dodged Xiao Wu’s rapid kick, caught her ankle, and threw her onto a bed with a controlled counter 7.
  • Tang San admitted he could not defeat Lin Tian directly 7.
  • Tang San never defeated him in sparring, even when aided by Xiao Wu or using concealed pebble attacks 12.

Self-Created Soul Skills

During their year of sparring, Lin Tian demonstrated numerous techniques that Xiao Wu understood as Self-Created Soul Skills. Years later, she recognized one of his signature techniques when Lin Yuan used it to sever the chains restraining her. This recognition led her to conclude that the masked Lin Yuan had stolen Lin Tian’s abilities 73.

Soul-Ring Preparation Knowledge

Lin Tian knew that Whale Rubber could strengthen a Soul Master’s body and permit the absorption of older soul rings. He asked Lin Yuan to have his family’s pharmacy locate it, offering payment or help obtaining Lin Yuan’s first soul ring in return. His claim to have personally killed a Four-Hundred-Year Azure Flame Lion accompanied this offer 10.

Equipment / Items

  • Illustrated technique manuals — Pinyin records of the Supreme Sacred Heaven and Earth Technique and Five Thunder Heavenly Heart Formula, sewn into his clothing for secrecy and preservation 13 16.
    • Written in plain language rather than classical terminology, with diagrams and cultivation notes. Lin Tian believed the pinyin would prevent Tang San from understanding their contents, but Lin Yuan could read it 13 16 17.
    • Taken from his corpse with his bloodstained clothing and concealed in Lin Yuan’s storage Soul Tool. Lin Yuan replaced the clothing with a new Nouding Academy uniform to hide the theft 16.
  • Travel funds — Lin Yuan gave him ten Gold Soul Coins and arranged a carriage for his holiday journey with Xiao Wu to Bamboo Ridge 13 14.

Relationships

  • Xiao Wu — Sparring partner, close companion, and Lin Tian’s primary love interest. Their closeness surpassed Xiao Wu’s attachment to Tang San, and they later became sworn siblings 7 12 14. During their first year, Xiao Wu regarded both boys as friends rather than romantic partners. Lin Tian’s hints about Tang Hao made her more wary of Tang San and contributed to her preference for accompanying Lin Tian home 12 13. Her grief and loyalty persisted years after his death, becoming a major reason for her hostility toward the masked Lin Yuan 73.
  • Tang San — Friend, roommate, sparring rival, and sworn elder brother. Tang San respected Lin Tian’s strength but privately resented his superior cultivation and closeness to Xiao Wu 7 12 14. Despite his jealousy, Tang San sincerely welcomed the sworn-sibling bond because of his longing for family affection 14. Lin Tian remained a benchmark for his strength: at Shrek’s entrance examinations, Yu Tianlong’s abilities challenged Tang San’s belief that no peer could rival him after Lin Tian’s death 47.
  • Lin Yuan — Fellow villager who initially provided necessities through Lin Kun’s arrangement. Lin Yuan later manipulated Lin Tian into taking Xiao Wu to Bamboo Ridge, then stole his technique manuals after his death 8 13 16. Lin Tian defended him against Xiao Wu’s criticism and trusted his apparent goodwill, unaware that Lin Yuan had long coveted his cultivation methods 1 8. Lin Yuan subsequently became the principal beneficiary of his preserved techniques 17 18 20.
  • Tang Hao — Tang San’s father and Lin Tian’s killer. Tang Hao considered Lin Tian’s relationship with Xiao Wu and his Twin Martial Souls too dangerous to tolerate 14 15. He initially contemplated retaining Lin Tian as Tang San’s subordinate, but decided that his twin-soul potential could eventually make him impossible to control 15.
  • Yu Xiaogang — Attempted to recruit Lin Tian as a disciple; Lin Tian refused 12. After his death, Yu Xiaogang blamed Spirit Hall without proof, claiming it had killed him for rejecting recruitment 17.
  • Lin Kun — Lin Yuan’s father, who arranged a dormitory, bedding, and necessities for the impoverished Lin Tian 3 8. He continued to feel sorrow and a sense of obligation toward Lin Tian after his death 19.
  • Li Keyong — Father in Lin Tian’s previous life and teacher of the Supreme Sacred Heaven and Earth Technique. His affection and plain-language instruction enabled Lin Tian to learn the complete art 13.
  • Li Cunxu — Elder brother in Lin Tian’s previous life. Lin Tian’s knowledge of his impending death contributed to his urgency in seeking powerful techniques 13.
  • Li Cunren — Woman Lin Tian won over in his previous life. She helped him acquire and understand the Five Thunder Heavenly Heart Formula and led the Sorrow Organization to seek the Fire Spirit Mushroom for him 13.
  • Zhang Xuanling — Source of the Five Thunder Heavenly Heart Formula. Lin Tian obtained his teachings by promising to help locate his son 13.
  • Yuan Tiangang — Killed Lin Tian in his previous life after identifying him as an anomaly who would interfere with events 13.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Nouding Academy

At Nouding Academy, Lin Tian became a central figure in Dorm Seven. He repeatedly defeated Xiao Wu in sparring, earned Tang San’s reluctant respect, and established himself as the strongest student among their immediate group 7 12. His Hundred-Year Soul Ring and Lotus Flying Blades decisively defeated Xiao Chenyu, further solidifying his position 9 10.

Lin Tian’s interest in Xiao Wu became increasingly apparent. He gave her his bedding and slept beside Tang San instead, while Xiao Wu grew closer to him and chose to accompany him back to Bamboo Ridge during the holiday 8 12.

His visible cultivation habits also influenced the other work-study students, who followed his example by meditating with their martial souls released. For Lin Tian, this practice served to disguise the blue energy flames produced by his inherited technique 12.

When Lin Yuan intervened in Xiao Chenyu’s defeat, Lin Tian agreed to spare him out of consideration for Lin Kun. He then sought the family pharmacy’s assistance in procuring Whale Rubber, revealing his knowledge of methods for increasing soul-ring absorption limits 10.

Sworn Siblings and Bamboo Ridge

Fearing that Tang Hao might target him for being close to Xiao Wu, Lin Tian proposed that he, Tang San, and Xiao Wu become sworn siblings in public. Tang San became the eldest brother, Lin Tian the second brother, and Xiao Wu the youngest sister 14.

He arranged for Xiao Chenyu to gather academy students to witness the ceremony, ensuring that Tang Hao would learn of the bond. When Xiao Wu asked what they would do if someone tried to kill her, Lin Tian answered first that the attacker would have to step over his corpse; Tang San then made the same promise 14.

Lin Tian would have preferred to travel with Tang San or accompany him to Holy Soul Village for greater safety. However, Xiao Wu refused to visit a place where Tang Hao might be present, while Tang San wished to return to his father. Lin Yuan supplied the carriage but stayed behind, anticipating that Tang Hao would attack 13 14.

The oath did not protect him. Tang Hao viewed Lin Tian as both a rival for Xiao Wu’s loyalty and a future threat because of his Twin Martial Souls. When confronted at Bamboo Ridge, Lin Tian attempted to save himself by invoking Tang San, offering to leave Xiao Wu, and even offering to serve Tang San as his master. Tang Hao killed him with the Clear Sky Hammer and threw him from a cliff 14 15.

The confrontation occurred on the night of Lin Tian’s arrival in the village. Tang Hao summoned him to the back mountain while Xiao Wu remained unaware at his home. After Lin Tian failed to return the following morning, she and the village chief organized searches in Bamboo Ridge and Notting City 14 15.

Death and Legacy

Bamboo Ridge’s villagers accepted Lin Tian’s death as an accident, but Tang San’s examination of the corpse revealed shattered bones and ruptured organs inconsistent with a fall 16 17. Lin Yuan publicly mourned him while secretly searching the body and taking the pinyin manuals hidden in his bloodstained clothing 16.

Lin Tian’s death deeply affected Xiao Wu, while Tang San privately felt relief that a stronger rival for Xiao Wu’s affection was gone 16. Years later, Xiao Wu recognized techniques used by Lin Yuan as skills she had previously seen Lin Tian perform, further tying Lin Tian’s legacy to Lin Yuan’s rise 73.

The discovery of the suspicious injuries produced conflicting explanations. Yu Xiaogang blamed Spirit Hall, while Xiao Wu immediately suspected Tang Hao and connected the killing to her value as a source of a Hundred-Thousand-Year Soul Ring and Soul Bone. Neither she nor Tang San possessed direct evidence of the killer’s identity at that time, and Lin Yuan continued supporting the accidental-fall narrative 17.

Lin Tian’s manuals became a foundation of Lin Yuan’s subsequent cultivation. Lin Yuan first chose the Five Thunder Heavenly Heart Formula because of its compatibility with his bamboo martial soul and the risk that visibly copying Lin Tian’s fire-attributed technique would invite suspicion. He later cultivated both arts, discovering that their complementary operation increased his combat strength and cultivation speed 17 18 20. He also used their special soul power to temper an external soul bone into complete fusion with his body, and eventually reached the fifth layer of both techniques and opened his Eight Extraordinary Meridians 76 87.

The disappearance of Lin Yuan’s family further complicated Xiao Wu’s interpretation of events. When captured years later, she accused the masked Lin Yuan of murdering Lin Tian, stealing his signature skills, and harming Lin Yuan and his kindly family, not realizing that she was speaking to Lin Yuan himself. Her refusal to sacrifice herself to him was therefore bound to her loyalty to Lin Tian as well as her resistance to coercion 72 73.

Lin Yuan responded by identifying Tang Hao as Lin Tian’s killer and explaining that Lin Tian’s closeness to Xiao Wu had obstructed Tang Hao’s plan to make her sacrifice herself for Tang San. This account connected the murder to motives Tang Hao had privately expressed at the time, although Lin Yuan’s broader accusations about Tang Hao’s treatment of the Blue Silver Emperor remained claims made during the conversation 14 15 73.
