Background

Tang San enters Nouding Academy as a poorly dressed, malnourished work-study student from Holy Soul Village, accompanied by village chief Old Jack. When the gatekeeper insults his Blue Silver Grass, Tang San nearly kills him with a Silent Sleeve Arrow before Yu Xiaogang intervenes. 4

Yu Xiaogang recognizes Tang San’s potential and guesses that he possesses Twin Martial Souls. When Yan Beifei exposes this secret, Tang San immediately judges him worthy of death according to the principles of the Mysterious Heaven Treasure Record and silently permits Yu Xiaogang to kill him. Tang San then accepts Yu Xiaogang as his teacher, valuing his cultivation knowledge over his personal combat strength. 4 5 6

At the academy, Tang San becomes acquainted with Lin Tian and Xiao Wu. Lin Tian consistently outmatches him in sparring, even when Tang San cooperates with Xiao Wu or uses hidden weapons, leaving a persistent but unspoken tension between them. 12 Tang San later becomes sworn siblings with Lin Tian and Xiao Wu as the eldest brother, with Lin Tian as second brother and Xiao Wu as younger sister. 14

After Lin Tian’s apparent death, Tang San examines the body with the Mysterious Heaven Skill and determines that shattered bones and ruptured organs could not have been caused by a fall alone. Though he publicly mourns Lin Tian, he privately feels relief that a powerful rival and competitor for Xiao Wu is gone. 16 17

Tang San retains memories of a previous life associated with the Tang Sect. When examining Lin Tian’s injuries, he compares the strength required to cause them with the experts of his former world and concludes that even his previous Tang Sect lacked anyone capable of such a feat. 17

His mother is Ah Yin, a transformed hundred-thousand-year Blue Silver Emperor, while his Clear Sky Hammer is inherited from Tang Hao. Tang Hao considers Tang San’s Twin Martial Souls his principal hope for eventual revenge against Spirit Hall. 71 73

Appearance

Tang San initially appears thin, gaunt, and severely malnourished, wearing patched clothing that contrasts sharply with Old Jack’s neat appearance. 4 By the time he reaches Suotuo City, he is around 1.7 meters tall. 45

  • Has an ordinary, unremarkable face. 4 45
  • Carries the distinctive Twenty-Four Bridges Bright Moon Night Soul Tool at his waist. 45
  • At Shrek, is recognized by his Blue Silver Grass and yellow-yellow Soul Ring configuration. 47
  • During the Continental Advanced Soul Master Academy Elite Tournament, displays a yellow-yellow-purple-black Soul Ring configuration. 127

Personality

Tang San is guarded, calculating, and highly protective of the secrets surrounding his Twin Martial Souls. Yan Beifei’s knowledge of that secret immediately provokes murderous intent, and Tang San refuses to help him even as Yan begs for his life. 4 5

He is pragmatic about cultivation. Although he recognizes Yu Xiaogang’s limitations and manipulations, he accepts him as a teacher because knowledge can be inherited, while raw strength cannot. 6

Tang San also craves familial connection after a childhood marked by emotional neglect. This need contributes to his ready acceptance of Lin Tian and Xiao Wu as sworn siblings. 14 However, his attachment to Xiao Wu develops into jealousy and insecurity: he fears Lin Yuan’s return as a potential rival, is devastated by more talented peers surpassing him, and becomes emotionally unstable after Xiao Wu is taken by the Titan Giant Ape. 45 51 64

His confidence repeatedly fluctuates with victories, cultivation resources, and comparisons with stronger opponents. Tang Hao turns his grief over Xiao Wu’s supposed death into hatred of the Titan Giant Ape, while the Saber-Toothed Demon Tiger Soul Bone briefly restores his ambition. Later defeats by Ye Feng and Xuan Jian again make him consider prioritizing his Clear Sky Hammer rather than following his teacher’s long-term Twin Martial Soul strategy. 80 105 128

Tang San can act loyally toward companions, catching Dai Mubai and standing with the other Shrek students to protect Tang Weiwei from Yu Tianlong. Nevertheless, his loyalty to her collapses when he learns that her grandfather sought Xiao Wu’s Soul Ring and Soul Bone. He later condemns Tang Weiwei’s attempt to involve him in curing Dugu Bo because it nearly gets the group killed and could endanger the Clear Sky Sect. 83 84 110

Although he initially accepts Yu Xiaogang’s authority, evidence contradicting the teacher’s prescribed Soul Ring limits gradually undermines that trust. After Yu Tianlong’s denunciation, Tang San begins wondering whether Yan Beifei’s early warning had been justified. 85

His attachment to Xiao Wu eventually weakens, allowing Tang Weiwei to occupy the emotional space left by her disappearance. Once he and Tang Weiwei become a couple, he keeps the jealous Oscar away from her. 115

Abilities & Skills

Twin Martial Souls

Tang San possesses Blue Silver Grass and the Clear Sky Hammer. His father orders him never to reveal his Twin Martial Souls, making the secret central to his early distrust of Yan Beifei. 4

  • Blue Silver Grass — His primary martial soul and control-system foundation. 1 47
  • Clear Sky Hammer — His hidden second martial soul; he uses it to strike the injured Lightning Falcon before finishing it with a hidden weapon. 67
  • Keeps the Clear Sky Hammer concealed because exposure of his Twin Martial Souls is considered dangerous. 4
  • Yu Xiaogang advocates delaying the addition of Soul Rings to the Clear Sky Hammer until Tang San is much stronger, allowing him to obtain a superior configuration for his second martial soul. Tang San repeatedly questions this strategy after being defeated by stronger peers. 12 80 105 128
  • Tang Hao notes that his Blue Silver Grass has not yet evolved into the Blue Silver Emperor when planning further enhancements through Soul Bones. 72

Blue Silver Grass Soul Skills

  • Blue Silver Entanglement — A binding skill whose power is considered inferior to Lin Tian’s lotus-based soul skill. 12
  • Possesses two yellow Soul Rings by the Shrek entrance assessment. 47
  • Thunder Net Binding — His third Soul Skill, obtained after absorbing the Lightning Falcon’s Soul Ring. When preparing to fight Yu Tianlong, he activates his third ring and gathers a ball of lightning in his hand, ready to release the skill. 67 84
  • His Lightning Falcon third ring is approximately two thousand years old and exceeds the limit previously taught by Yu Xiaogang. 80
  • By the tournament qualifiers, possesses a ten-thousand-year fourth Soul Ring, giving him a yellow-yellow-purple-black configuration. The fourth skill’s name and exact effects are not established in the available account. 127

Mysterious Heaven Skill

Tang San cultivates the Mysterious Heaven Skill, an inherited technique associated with the Tang Sect.

  • Channels it through Lin Tian’s corpse to assess the true cause of death. 17
  • Its cultivation helps him remain conscious after the Titan Giant Ape’s shockwave incapacitates most of the Shrek group. 64

Purple Demon Eye

  • Reaches its second stage, the Minute Realm, after Tang San absorbs a Head Soul Bone. 127
  • Allows him to see through the cultivation of Soul Masters weaker than himself. He uses it to determine that Zhang Qing is only around Soul Elder level, remaining skeptical of the latter’s claims of exceptional abilities. 127

Hidden Weapons and Movement Techniques

Tang San combines Tang Sect techniques with concealed weapons and agile movement.

  • Silent Sleeve Arrow — Nearly kills the Nouding Academy gatekeeper. 4
  • Godly Zhuge Crossbow — Shoots the wounded Lightning Falcon full of holes after it is struck by the Clear Sky Hammer. 67
  • Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track — Used to pursue Xiao Wu and Chang Gong Miao through the Star Dou Great Forest. 66
  • His hidden weapons fail to overcome Ye Feng during Shrek’s defeat by the Imperial Fighting Team’s vice-captain. 105

Soul-Bone Enhancements

  • Lightning Falcon External Soul Bone — Forms as a pair of wings while he absorbs the Lightning Falcon’s Soul Ring, but Xuan Jian forcibly tears it from his back before it can fully fuse. 67
  • Saber-Toothed Demon Tiger Right-Arm Soul Bone — A seventy-thousand-year Soul Bone given by Tang Hao; its absorption raises Tang San to nearly level 34. 80
  • Head Soul Bone — Its absorption advances his Purple Demon Eye to the Minute Realm. Its name and age are not specified in the available account. 127
  • By the confrontation with Xuan Jian in the tournament, his recovered confidence is attributed in part to having absorbed three Soul Bones. The identity of the remaining bone is not specified. 128
  • Tang Weiwei later obtains a hundred-thousand-year Soft Bone Rabbit left-arm Soul Bone and plans to give it to him to help him reach level fifty. This remains a proposed enhancement rather than a confirmed acquisition or absorption. 133

Immortal-Herb Enhancement

  • Eight-Petal Immortal Orchid — Given to him by Tang Weiwei after the setbacks surrounding Ye Feng and Heaven Dou Royal Academy. The gift improves his spirits and his opinion of her. 115
  • Tang Weiwei later judges that a newly obtained Velvet Sky Chrysanthemum is unsuitable for him while the medicinal effects of his existing Immortal Herb remain active. 133

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Twenty-Four Bridges Bright Moon Night — Soul Tool worn at his waist. 45
  • Silent Sleeve Arrow — Concealed weapon used against the Nouding Academy gatekeeper. 4
  • Godly Zhuge Crossbow — Hidden crossbow used to kill the Lightning Falcon. 67
  • Eight-Petal Immortal Orchid — Cultivation resource given by Tang Weiwei. 115
  • Proposed Spirit Descent Talisman — Tang Weiwei obtains a knockoff talisman capable of temporarily increasing cultivation by two rings. She intends Tang San to conceal it beneath his clothing and pass its effects off as a Soul Bone Skill during the tournament final; he is not shown receiving or using it. 133

Relationships

  • Tang Hao — Father and a Titled Douluo. Tang Hao is fiercely protective of Tang San, personally heals him after Xuan Jian removes his External Soul Bone, and later gives him a powerful right-arm Soul Bone to restore his confidence. 71 80 He also manipulates Tang San’s grief by falsely claiming that the Titan Giant Ape killed Xiao Wu, directing him toward revenge and further cultivation. During Yu Tianlong’s assault on Yu Xiaogang, he prevents Tang San from intervening on the grounds that it is an internal clan matter. 80 85
  • Ah Yin — Mother, a transformed hundred-thousand-year Blue Silver Emperor. Tang Hao previously kept her Seed of Life and right-leg Soul Bone hidden, but both are stolen before he can use the bone to enhance Tang San. 57 72 73
  • Yu Xiaogang — Teacher. Tang San accepts him as master because of his knowledge of martial-soul cultivation, despite recognizing his limited strength. 6 His respect diminishes after Yu Tianlong challenges the teacher’s theories and exposes his history. Nevertheless, Yu Xiaogang continues centering his plans for Shrek’s success on Tang San and persuades him not to abandon the delayed cultivation strategy for his second martial soul after Ye Feng’s victory. 85 104 105
  • Xiao Wu — Sworn younger sister. Tang San is intensely attached to her and pursues her into the Star Dou Great Forest after the Titan Giant Ape takes her, though her feelings toward him are portrayed as familial rather than romantic. 14 64 78 He believes Tang Hao’s claim that she was killed by the Titan Giant Ape and develops a desire to avenge her. Over time, his attachment weakens as he grows closer to Tang Weiwei. 80 115
  • Lin Tian — Sworn second brother, friend, and persistent rival. Tang San never defeats him in sparring and privately feels relief after Lin Tian’s death removes a rival for Xiao Wu’s affection. 12 14 16
  • Lin Yuan — Former Nouding Academy acquaintance. Tang San becomes uneasy when Xiao Wu recognizes a transformed Lin Yuan in Suotuo City, fearing he may again become close to her. 45 He accepts Lin Yuan’s claim to be someone named “Ling Yuan,” reasoning that the stranger’s cultivation is too high for his former acquaintance. 45
  • Yan Beifei — A transmigrator who discovers Tang San’s Twin Martial Souls. Tang San considers him deserving of death and refuses his plea for help. 4 5 After Yu Tianlong dismantles Yu Xiaogang’s claims, Tang San reconsiders whether Yan had actually been trying to warn him. 85
  • Old Jack — Village chief of Holy Soul Village who escorts Tang San to Nouding Academy. 4
  • Tang Weiwei — Cousin, fellow Shrek student, and later romantic partner. She comforts him after his poor entrance-assessment performance, and he initially protects her from Yu Tianlong. He subsequently renounces their cousin relationship upon learning that her grandfather tried to seize Xiao Wu. 52 83 84 Her reckless claim that he can cure Dugu Bo deepens his resentment, but her gift of an Eight-Petal Immortal Orchid later improves their relationship. Over the following six months, they become an inseparable couple, while she secretly pursues system rewards through sexual encounters with other Shrek men. 110 115 Her later plans to strengthen him with a Soul Bone and talisman are interrupted by her death, reported to the Shrek staff through Ning Rongrong’s manipulated account. Tang San’s reaction is not shown in that account. 133 136
  • Yu Tianlong — Rival whose superior cultivation and Soul Rings repeatedly undermine Tang San’s confidence. Their hostility escalates when Tang San joins the other Shrek students in protecting Tang Weiwei. Yu Tianlong later exposes the Clear Sky Sect’s attempt to capture Xiao Wu and attacks Yu Xiaogang, destabilizing Tang San’s family and teacher relationships. 47 51 83 84 85
  • Ye Feng — Imperial Fighting Team vice-captain who defeats the entire Shrek team without using Soul Skills, overcoming Tang San’s hidden weapons as well. He later joins Shrek alongside Ye Lingling after negotiating with Tang Weiwei. 105 111
  • Xuan Jian — Spirit Hall enemy who extracts Tang San’s Lightning Falcon External Soul Bone and orders his death before Tang Hao’s arrival forces a retreat. He later defeats Tang San and the entire Shrek tournament team in a single attack. 67 71 128
  • Oscar — Fellow Shrek student who helps care for him after his near-fatal injury. Their relationship becomes strained by Oscar’s jealousy over Tang Weiwei, whom Tang San keeps him away from after becoming her partner. 72 115
  • Zhang Qing — A boasting Soul Elder whose claims Tang San only partially believes. Tang San assesses his cultivation with Purple Demon Eye and remains unconvinced that he possesses exceptional techniques or a superior martial soul without a demonstration. 126 127
  • Shi Nian — Zhang Qing’s grandfather, a Titled Douluo whom Tang San regards as inferior to Tang Hao and other Titled Douluos he has encountered. He later lures Tang San outside Heaven Dou City while Tang Weiwei is pursuing further system rewards. 127 133
