Background / History

Klein formerly lived under the identity Klein Moretti and served as a Nighthawk in Tingen. Ince Zangwill killed him while pursuing a powerful sealed item, but Klein survived through Mr. Fool’s intervention. He subsequently pursued revenge while carrying out Mr. Fool’s commissions. 787

He operates the Tarot Club from Above the Gray Fog as Mr. Fool, cultivating an image of an inscrutable deity while using the identity World to trade materials, issue requests, and act in the outside world. He deliberately monitors members’ emotional reactions and encourages their reliance on the Tarot Club. 213 241

Klein’s vendetta against Ince culminated at Resurrection Square. He coordinated Sifa, Ludwell, Leonard Mitchell, and Daly Simone against Ince and the Red Angel Evil Spirit, then personally executed Ince with Death Knell. The battle also completed Klein’s advancement ritual for Sequence 4. 773 779 780

As the threat of George III’s Black Emperor ritual became clear, Klein committed the Tarot Club to preventing the king’s apotheosis and the wider war engineered around it. He shared the ritual’s requirements with members while allowing those unable or unwilling to participate to withdraw. 844 845

Klein later became trapped in a dangerous confrontation with Amon. Although he could continue attending Tarot Club gatherings through concealment, he acknowledged that returning to reality might place him directly beside Amon again. 936 937

After becoming an Angel, Klein fought alongside Sifa in major operations against Kotar, Suah, and Zaratul. While Sifa restrained Zaratul in Utopia, Klein advanced to Attendant of Mysteries and immediately joined the battle. 1001 1039 1127

Appearance

When appearing as Klein Moretti, Klein is a scholarly-looking young man with black hair, brown eyes, deep-set features, and formal clothing. 778 787

  • Usually wears a half-top silk hat and black formal suit when using his Klein Moretti appearance. 778
  • Alters his appearance and identity frequently through disguises, Faceless abilities, Marionettes, and historical projections. 739 918
  • As the Fool, he sits concealed behind dense Gray Fog at the head of the Bronze Long Table. 213 1171

Personality

Klein is cautious, observant, and highly practical. He prefers layered plans, indirect action, and contingency measures over open confrontation, particularly when facing Angels, Sealed Artifacts, or unknown enemies. 764 918 920

He is also adept at social manipulation. As Mr. Fool, he maintains an aloof divine image while subtly encouraging the Tarot Club’s members to depend on the organization and view their growth as connected to him. 213

Despite this calculated exterior, Klein retains strong loyalty to those harmed by Ince Zangwill. His execution of Ince was framed as retribution for Daly, Leonard, the Nightwatchers, the Blackthorn Security Company, and himself. 779

Klein can exercise restraint when personal motives conflict with others’ safety. Although he considered using Beyonder Characteristic Convergence to lure Ince into a trap, he rejected involving Sifa or other uninvolved people merely to satisfy his revenge. 770
