Ch. 801Enchanted Speakers and Cannons
Plot and events
- The Fire God Army, led by Balti, opens the battle with a small but elite force. Flame-blessed armor and strong firepower give it an early advantage, inflicting losses on Green’s troops at roughly two to one.
- Green’s forces recover from the surprise. Centaur cavalry threaten the flanks, long-range Dragon-Hunting Rifles and artillery wear down the enemy’s armor, and music from enchanted speakers boosts morale.
- Balti expects his troops to hold until a Portal brings reinforcements, but his line and then his flank begin to falter. Green’s commander, Penny, deliberately eases the pressure—pulling back the Centaurs and reducing artillery fire—to let the enemy survive and finish opening the Portal.
- After two hours, the Portal is complete, and a second soon increases the flow of reinforcements. Green also brings in his main force, including much of the Mechanical Army, while Balti requests more troops from the Fire God.
- The skirmish gives way to a massive confrontation: armies totaling over a million face each other across the desert. As the Mist World’s sky clears, the Fire God Army uses enormous magical war drums; Green’s side counters with more than a hundred enchanted mobile speakers playing morale-boosting music.
- Balti, unsettled by the speakers’ effectiveness but contemptuous of technology, orders them destroyed. The Fire God Army uncovers ancient enchanted copper cannons and prepares to fire.
Character developments and interactions
- Balti is cautious and politically wary: he delays joining the fight for fear of appearing incompetent or angering the Fire God. He considers capturing Green’s advanced force for the coming Divine War, but ultimately leaves the decision to his master. As reinforcements arrive, he realizes Green may have intentionally allowed the Portals to open and responds with anger.
- Green anticipates a larger battle and brings in his full strength, especially Mechanical Life units and upgraded Mecha, to test their capabilities.
- Penny shows tactical control, unexpectedly restraining a near-victory so the enemy can complete its Portal and draw in more forces.
- Dr. Vincent demonstrates practical ingenuity by recognizing that research speakers could serve as enchanted battlefield amplifiers and morale boosters.
- Balti’s private disdain for technology contrasts with his dependence on enchanted weapons and armor supplied by the Fire God.
Significant themes
- Technology versus tradition: Green’s speakers and mechanized forces challenge the Fire God Army’s drums, enchanted armor, and ancient cannons.
- Strategy and deception: A retreat from pressure is actually a deliberate choice to let the enemy reinforce, setting up a larger confrontation.
- Power and hierarchy: Balti’s decisions are constrained by fear of the Fire God’s judgment, even as he commands the army.
- War as adaptation: Both sides adjust to unfamiliar strengths, from armor-piercing tactics to battlefield-wide magical buffs.
