Background / History

Admission of Long Ye

Konoha initially shelters Long Ye after Minato Namikaze finds him near a destroyed village. After Long Ye awakens his unusual Kekkei Genkai, the village permits him to take the Ninja Academy graduation examination, seeing both a humanitarian obligation and a potentially valuable military asset 6 9.

After passing the examination, Long Ye is accepted as a Genin and later formally swears allegiance before Hiruzen Sarutobi. Minato presents him with a Konoha forehead protector and flak jacket as symbols of his official status 7 9. Hiruzen and Minato nevertheless remain wary that Long Ye's evolving power may eventually allow the transplantation of Kekkei Genkai, a development they believe could destabilize the Shinobi World 9.

Third Shinobi World War

Iwagakure's invasion begins earlier than expected after Konoha captures the rogue Iwa shinobi Tao Gui alive. The village mobilizes Jonin and Chunin to the border, but suffers heavy losses because Iwagakure exploits incomplete defenses before Konoha can fully prepare 30.

As the war expands, Konoha faces Iwagakure in the northwest, Sunagakure in the southwest, and Kumogakure in the northeast 36. It forms a wartime alliance with Sunagakure against Iwagakure, then achieves a decisive victory at Kannabi Bridge by severing Iwagakure's supply route 42 69. The resulting peace is short-lived: Kirigakure unexpectedly attacks Konoha after the wider war appears to be ending 69.

Leadership Crisis and the Nine-Tails Attack

Hiruzen resigns following criticism of his wartime concessions, and Minato Namikaze is selected as the Fourth Hokage three days later 76. During Kushina Uzumaki's childbirth, an attack involving the Nine-Tails devastates nearly one-third of Konoha and leaves Minato's body alive but without its soul 135 136.

Danzo attempts to become acting Hokage with the daimyo's backing, but lacks support among Konoha's shinobi. The village instead restores Hiruzen to office, and the Land of Fire formally reinstates him as Third Hokage 136 140. Reconstruction costs nearly ten years of Konoha's tax revenue until Long Ye provides enough personal gold to resolve the village's financial crisis 140 141.

Internal Fracture and Long Ye's Defection

Danzo uses Shisui Uchiha's eye to manipulate Hiruzen and arrange an unauthorized operation against Long Ye. Long Ye concludes that Konoha has discarded him despite his wartime service and financial support, breaking with the village as a missing-nin 146.

Long Ye later infiltrates the Forbidden Technique Library with help from Yamato, destroys its three defensive barriers, and escapes with several high-level forbidden scrolls after fighting Konoha's forces and Hiruzen 190 191 192. The raid exposes weaknesses in Konoha's security and intensifies its pursuit of Long Ye's masked organization 193.

Uchiha Rebellion

Konoha's leadership suspects the Uchiha clan of assisting Long Ye because he used the Sharingan during the library raid. Years of distrust and suppression culminate in an Uchiha rebellion, which Konoha violently suppresses; surviving clan members are imprisoned rather than executed 224 225.

Fugaku and Mikoto Uchiha reportedly die in prison, while Hiruzen chooses imprisonment over the clan's mass execution in order to avoid further bloodshed and preserve the Sharingan bloodline 225 226. When Itachi escapes death row, Konoha's elite shinobi attempt to recapture him, but Long Ye intervenes and extracts him from the village 226 227.

Fourth Shinobi World War and Destruction

Akatsuki launches a full-scale assault on Konoha to seize its remaining Jinchuriki, Rin Nohara and Kushina Uzumaki. In response, the Five Great Ninja Villages gather their Kage and elite forces within Konoha, forming an allied front against Akatsuki 257 258.

Nagato's forces breach Konoha's massive defensive barrier, while Long Ye—publicly aligned with Akatsuki—secretly acts to prevent Rin's capture 257 258. The allied forces stop Nagato's Chibaku Tensei, but Konoha still loses more than half of its buildings to the resulting debris 259.

Nagato subsequently unleashes Super Shinra Tensei, completely destroying Konoha and leaving only a small number of survivors. Hiruzen sacrifices himself with the Reaper Death Seal to imprison Nagato's soul, ending the immediate assault at the cost of his own life 260.
