Background

Sabo was born into the Goa Kingdom’s nobility but despised his family and chose to flee to sea at roughly eleven years old. He sailed alone aboard a tiny vessel bearing a pirate flag with a blue “S,” declaring that he would not return. A Celestial Dragon destroyed his boat for passing nearby, leaving Sabo injured and sinking in the sea. 127

Mislanda rescued him and retaliated against the Celestial Dragon. When Monkey D. Dragon intervened to claim the noble alive, Mislanda accepted the exchange: Dragon took the Celestial Dragon, while Mislanda took responsibility for Sabo. 128 Sabo awakened with his memories intact, remembered both his identity and the attack on his ship, and willingly became Mislanda’s disciple after passing his pressure test. 129

After reuniting with Ace and Luffy, Sabo chose to leave the Goa Kingdom with Mislanda. His teacher then entrusted him with the Rumble-Rumble Fruit, beginning the training that would make him a commander of the Dark Night Pirates. 130 131

Although confident to the point of arrogance in battle, Sabo is more restrained than Mislanda and does not habitually seek to kill weaker enemies.
