The Kongtong School was on Mount Zhaoyao. Could it be...?
Holy shit. This had never been simple. Their so-called chance encounter was probably something someone else had planned all along.
The Xingxing raced through the forest like wind and lightning, leaping from tree to tree. At last, it stopped atop the tallest Purple Tenuity Immortal Fir and, just as the original book described, hung the baby shoe in its crown a hundred meters above the ground.
Senior sister, get the Beast-Binding Rope ready, then carry me up to catch that Xingxing, Ye Zhenzhen said decisively.
Ye Qingyao immediately rummaged through her Heaven-and-Earth Bag and pulled out an ordinary Beast-Binding Rope. She had not wanted to take her junior sister, still a baby, so high into the treetops. It felt unsafe. But after Zhenzhen urged her again and again, she held the little one and flew on her sword toward the fir's crown.
The Xingxing hid more than ten meters behind the baby shoe, waiting to shove Ye Qingyao off when she came to retrieve it.
To its surprise, though Ye Qingyao appeared to be heading for the shoe, she threw the Beast-Binding Rope the moment she drew close. She meant to bind the Xingxing and teach the mischievous beast a lesson, but her aim was off. The rope slipped wide and caught only one of its legs.
That was bad.
The Xingxing struggled desperately to break free, throwing them all off balance. They plunged straight down from the tree.
We're not going to end up flattened like pancakes, are we...? Ye Zhenzhen thought in despair.
A white figure gleaming with gold sped toward them. The iconic scene from the original book—the male lead rescuing the heroine, sweeping her into his arms and spinning with her—had arrived after all.
Except this time, the picture included a baby whose expression was all over the place and a snarling Xingxing.
The male lead cast the heroine a tender gaze, only to make the baby in her arms burst into tears. The three of them and the Xingxing spiraled down and hit the ground hard.
Not a shred of beauty or romance. Just a complete mess...
Waaah! That scared the baby half to death!
Ye Zhenzhen cried miserably, her little face scrunched up.
Seeing this, Shen Xingyan showed his warm, attentive side. He stepped forward at once to help Ye Qingyao up. "Miss, are you hurt anywhere? Did the little girl in your arms get frightened?"
Like his father, he wore a white robe embroidered with gold. One glance marked him as a disciple of the Kongtong School. The difference was that his father's robe bore a dragon pattern, while his bore a flood-dragon pattern.
Shen Xingyan considered himself handsome, graceful, and distinguished, with an illustrious family background. He had always been supremely confident in his appeal, believing that everyone saw him as
an untouchable flower atop a lofty peak.
But Ye Zhenzhen knew better. What lofty flower? He was a black-hearted lotus in a white peacock's plumage, rotten to the core just like his father. All to set up a groveling pursuit of the wife he had lost, the book had forced this awful man into the male lead's role. Some novels were getting harder and harder to stomach.
"I'm fine. My junior sister was just startled. She'll be all right in a little while," Ye Qingyao said politely, gently patting Ye Zhenzhen's little bottom to soothe her.
"Don't be afraid, little sister. I caught you just now and brought you down safely. You won't fall," Shen Xingyan said as he leaned in to comfort her, making sure to mention his rescue.
Shen Xingyan's face loomed over Ye Zhenzhen, blocking out the sky. His nostrils looked like two bottomless black holes. She had almost stopped crying, but now her face clouded over again, and she wailed even louder.
That scared the baby half to death!
Her little face flushed scarlet, and her whole body trembled as though she had seen something terrifying.
Shen Xingyan: ?
"Is my face really that frightening? Ever since I was little, girls have praised me for my handsome bearing and unrivaled looks. They said they wanted to marry me someday."
You white peacock! You narcissist! Your nostrils are huge and pitch-black, like two monsters that could swallow people whole! Aaaah!
The little dumpling pointed at his nostrils, sniffling and sobbing as though she had been terribly wronged.
So her junior sister had not cried earlier because she was afraid of heights. It was because of Shen Xingyan's nostrils. After hearing Zhenzhen, Ye Qingyao looked at them too. They really were large and deep.
She nearly laughed aloud, but that would have been rude. Her expression turned so strange that holding it in almost did her an injury.
Now Shen Xingyan felt even more aggrieved. "Shouldn't the sight of a handsome man like me leave you awestruck? What are those looks on your faces?"
Awestruck? He tui! Who could be that blind?
Oh, right, senior sister! Don't forget the Xingxing. Draw your sword and pretend you're going to kill it.
In the middle of crying, Ye Zhenzhen suddenly remembered the Xingxing lying unconscious on the ground, one leg still bound.
Following her junior sister's instructions, Ye Qingyao drew her sword with a show of menace and pretended to thrust it through the Xingxing's heart. "I'll kill you, you wicked beast!"
Shen Xingyan stepped in front of the Xingxing and declared righteously, "Miss, this is a living creature! It was only playing a joke on everyone. How can you threaten to kill it over such a small matter?"
"You're so beautiful, miss. Surely your heart is just as lovely. Teaching it a lesson is enough."
A Mary Sue was still a Mary Sue. Ye Qingyao was too innocent and kind. Faced with that bit of moral coercion, she immediately put her sword away in embarrassment.
Ye Zhenzhen: ?
Senior sister, don't put your sword away! That scumbag was so close to showing his fox's tail!
But Ye Qingyao stood frozen, her hand on the hilt, and would not draw her sword again.
"That Demon Beast did wrong! It nearly sent my senior sister and junior sister falling from hundreds of meters up. Two people could have died. How is that a small matter? Killing it wouldn't be unjust!"
A boy's voice rang out. Though still a little childish, every word struck the ground like a hammer.
Who's that? He said exactly what I was thinking! Ye Zhenzhen turned her little head excitedly toward the voice. A young boy approached with anger written across his face, his sword pointed straight at the Xingxing's head.
He looked about eight or nine, with a pair of unmistakable Auspicious Phoenix Eyes. Their outer corners were unusually long and tilted slightly upward, his lashes fluttered like little butterflies, and his skin shone white in the sunlight.
