Background and History

Shen Xingyan is Immortal Venerable Shen’s son and a leading disciple of the Kongtong School. At seventeen, he is already at the Golden Core Late Stage. He pursues Ye Qingyao after hearing of her healing abilities and special constitution, then seeing her at Cloudsky Sect 5 7 8.

In the original novel known to Ye Zhenzhen, Shen wins Ye Qingyao’s heart, coerces her into becoming his Furnace, and helps his father destroy Cloudsky Sect. He steals the method for breaking its Mountain-Guarding Formation and later becomes Immortal Venerable. Ye Zhenzhen’s interventions prevent that course of events from unfolding as written 5 7 108.

Appearance

Shen cultivates a carefully maintained, handsome image, though his hair becomes a recurring source of embarrassment 6 45 99.

• Wears a white Kongtong robe embroidered with gold and a flood-dragon pattern 6.
• Has prominent nostrils and large, expressive eyes that Ye Zhenzhen and others notice 6 47.
• Prizes his long black hair; Lei Jiajia burns part of it, and Ye Qinghui later cuts off more than half 40 45.
• Develops thinning hair and a receding hairline after cultivating with the Primordial Chaos Pearl 99.

Personality

Shen is vain, status-conscious, and accustomed to attention. He shows off his flying-boat collection to impress Ye Qingyao, resents being seen in an outer disciple’s uniform, and reacts furiously when his appearance is mocked 10 15 45. His courtship relies on gifts, flattery, withdrawal, and appeals for sympathy; when Ye Qingyao plainly rejects him, he dismisses her refusal and tries to force himself on her 11 12 104 105.

He also holds grudges. After the fall of Kongtong School, he accepts an old Daoist’s claim that Ye Zhenzhen and Ye Qinghui stole the destiny meant for him and attacks them during the Immortal-Demon War 127.

Abilities and Skills

Swordsmanship

Shen fights with an ornate golden Spirit Sword and powerful Sword Qi. His clashes with Ye Qinghui reach a stalemate in the tournament final and, years later, at the Spirit Spring 44 105.

• Can launch Sword Qi at a distance 50.
• His attacks become disordered when backlash from the Primordial Chaos Pearl disrupts his meridians 44.

Space-Binding Formation

Shen conceals formation runes around the tournament arena, then lures Ye Qinghui through all four corners to activate them 44.

• The formation binds and slows Ye Qinghui, weakening his speed-based sword technique 44.
• It requires advance preparation and consumes substantial spiritual energy; Ye Qinghui escapes its control briefly with a Formation-Breaking Talisman 44 45.

Contracted Spirit Beast

Shen’s contracted Xingxing steals Ye Zhenzhen’s shoe, drawing Ye Qingyao into a dangerous fall. Shen claims the creature acted independently, but Ye Qingchuan challenges that account, pointing to the authority a master holds over a contracted beast 6 7.

• Ye Qingyao — the focus of his pursuit. She rejects him and refuses to become his Furnace 104 105 106.
• Ye Zhenzhen — repeatedly disrupts his plans and becomes a target of his resentment; his final ambush fatally wounds her 5 127.
• Ye Qinghui — tournament rival who defeats him and cuts off his hair; later intervenes when Shen attacks Ye Qingyao and defeats him again during the war 45 105 127.
• Ye Qingchuan — challenges Shen over the Xingxing’s actions and eventually kills him after Ye Zhenzhen is struck 7 127.

Story Role and Major Arcs

• Courtship and tournament: Shen approaches Ye Qingyao after the Xingxing incident. He reaches Nascent Soul during the Immortal Sects Grand Tournament, but Ye Qinghui defeats him in the final 5 8 43 45.
• Divine Descent: He leads disciples in pursuit of the Heaven-Opening Sword. Its barrier repels him, and Qiongqi kills the disciples assigned to distract it; Shen escapes badly injured. The sword instead accepts Ye Zhenzhen 67 68.
• Kongtong School’s fall: He attempts to force Ye Qingyao to become his Furnace. The discovery of captive female cultivators exposes the Shen family’s crimes; after his father’s defeat, Shen disappears 105 106 108.
• Final ambush: Disguised as a Devil Race member, he shoots Ye Zhenzhen with an Immortal-Slaying Arrow. Jiang Wan takes a second arrow meant for Ye Qinghui. Ye Qinghui defeats Shen, and Ye Qingchuan kills him 127.
