Ch. 1Chapter 1
Chapter 1 Summary
At a lavish banquet celebrating the Shen family’s recognition of Shen Luoluo as their long-lost daughter, guests whisper and mock her. Many assume she is an illegitimate child from the countryside and contrast her unfavorably with Shen Anya, the family’s beloved daughter, who appears kind and protective of Luoluo.
A boastful young man, dismissing Luoluo as an unsophisticated country girl, strides over intending to embarrass her. Luoluo, however, seems unconcerned with the crowd: she calmly eats a butter cookie and tries to contact “Little A,” a system she acquired three days earlier after waking in a hospital.
Through her thoughts, the chapter reveals that Luoluo has transmigrated into a novel as a supposedly stupid, vicious supporting character. In that story, Shen Anya is the fortunate fake heiress, cherished by the Shen family after being switched at birth. The chapter ends as the young man approaches Luoluo.
Characters and Interactions
- Shen Luoluo: The newly recognized biological daughter. Despite others’ expectations that she will be awkward or upset, she is composed and focused on her snack and system.
- Shen Anya: The fake heiress. She publicly calls Luoluo her older sister and tells others not to insult her, presenting herself as considerate.
- The banquet guests: They trade insinuations about Luoluo’s origins and watch her with curiosity and contempt.
- The gray-haired young man: He boasts that he will quickly put Luoluo in her place and approaches her.
Key Themes and Setup
- Appearance versus reality: Luoluo is judged before anyone knows her, while Anya’s gracious public image shapes the room’s view of her.
- Outsider status and family identity: Luoluo’s arrival disrupts the established family roles and social assumptions.
- Transmigration and fate: Luoluo knows she is inside a novel and has been assigned the role of a villainous supporting character.
- Comic contrast: The guests’ dramatic scrutiny contrasts with Luoluo’s calm, almost mundane concern with cookies and her unresponsive system.
