Background / History

Chen Xing encounters Na’er as a frightened child pursued by thugs. She remembers her name but neither her parents nor her home. After helping her escape, he brings her to his family, where Lang Yue takes her in as Chen Xing’s and Tang Wulin’s little sister 4 5. Na’er quickly grows attached to Chen Xing. She keeps his weapon-making secret and, when the thugs return, steps in front of him despite being their target 6 12.

Years later, Chen Xing fears that the Silver Dragon King’s dominant personality will awaken and cause Na’er to disappear. When Di Tian comes to take her away, Chen Xing fights him in the Starfarer. Na’er initially urges Chen Xing to flee, then struggles against the personality within her after believing he has been killed. Once the Starfarer rises again, her will permanently suppresses that personality. She chooses to stay with Chen Xing 22 23 24 25.

At the Great Beast Grounds, Na’er tells Chen Xing and Tang Wulin that fragments of the Silver Dragon King’s memories show her soul beasts being slaughtered. She wants to remember their suffering without letting it determine her future. Rather than destroy the Spirit Pagoda, she resolves to reform its exploitative Soul Spirit system from within; Chen Xing offers to help by creating Artificial Soul Spirits 31.

His care helps her choose a future beyond the vengeance suggested by her inherited memories 31.

As Pagoda Master, she is composed under political hostility but ruthless toward people she considers threats. She executes corrupt or disloyal Spirit Pagoda members without trials, while ordering reforms intended to protect civilians and soul beasts 57 59 60.
