Background / History
Ancient inter-realm conflict
According to Tian Yin Ghost King, the Netherworld once possessed spiritual energy second only to the Heaven Realm and was home to a Ghost Emperor. Heavenly Realm cultivators later targeted it as a source of spiritual energy after their own resources declined. 325
Tian Yin and three fellow Heavenly Masters opened nine passages between the Human Realm and Netherworld. The resulting loss of Yin Sha Spiritual Energy weakened the Netherworld, while the rifts enabled Ghost Kings to repeatedly invade the Human Realm for Blood Food. 325
Historical records describe Ghost Kings sending Nether Soldiers and Ghost Generals through such passages to massacre humans for blood sacrifices; one invasion attributed to the Asura Ghost King lasted over a decade and killed millions. 23
Renewed access to the Human Realm
Tree Demon Granny contacted the Black Mountain Ghost King by sacrificing hundreds of thousands of trapped Yin Souls. The Ghost King attempted to widen the resulting rift with its mountain-sized body and Ghost King Seal, but Yan Chixia destroyed the seal and closed the breach. 22 23
Later, the destruction of a seal beneath Kunlun Temple released cold Yin Sha Spiritual Energy and left behind a spatial rift. Additional rifts emerged across the Human Realm, increasing the proportion of Yin-attribute spiritual energy there. 264 272
The rifts were dangerous even for Ghost Clan scouts: Yin Luo Ghost King dispatched thousands of explorers through the Kunlun rift, but nearly all died in spatial turbulence. 275
Qing Shan's arrival and conquest
Qing Shan entered the Netherworld through the Yan Mo Seal and arrived at an abandoned Ascension Platform in You Yan Ghost King's volcanic southern territory. He found a realm defined by factional warfare, devouring, and Ghost King control. 287
Using Conquest of Otherworld, Qing Shan and Zhou Yi introduced Human Realm players into the Netherworld through Yin Soul carriers. The players rapidly became a major military force, occupying ghost cities and undermining the established Ghost Kings. 293 301 321
The Ghost God Cult ultimately unified the Netherworld. Qing Shan became Ghost Emperor, while Xuan Qing, Xuan Yu, Black Mountain, You Yan, and Pashuo ruled five surrounding territories as Ghost Kings. 327
Environment
The Netherworld is a perpetually dim realm with no daylight. A cold moon hangs over its yellowed sky; legend credits an ancient great cultivator with drawing moonlight into the realm so wandering souls could condense ghost bodies. 287
- A blood-yellow river runs from the Yellow Springs to the Sea of Blood, carrying souls and ghosts unable to reincarnate. Patrolling ghost officials and Yin soldiers drive escaping souls back into the river or annihilate them. 231
- The extreme south contains the Ten Thousand Volcanoes, where lava, ash clouds, black trees, Yin Spirits, and Yin Mountain Ginseng are found. 287
- Spiritual energy is more than ten times denser than in the Human Realm, allowing for a far higher cultivation ceiling. 287
- Ghost cities are generally built on Yin veins; they provide relative stability and house roughly thirty percent of the Ghost Clan population, or up to half when temporary residents are included. 327
- Large numbers of nomadic ghosts remain outside the cities, living as independent cultivators or wandering killers. 327
Inhabitants and Society
Ghost Clan
The Ghost Clan differs from ordinary Yin Souls and Ghostly Entities: its members possess both a ghost body and an independent Spiritual Soul. Yin Souls may eventually form ghost bodies, becoming Ghost Immortals through orthodox cultivation or Ghost Clan members through demonic and heretical paths. 275
- Ghost Clan members cannot reproduce; they form from transformed wandering souls. 287
- Every Ghost Clan member possesses Spiritual Roots and a long lifespan, though appearances and innate traits vary drastically between lineages. 287
- Ghost bodies can arise naturally from Yin Sha Spiritual Energy or from Human Realm dead whose obsessions persist after death. Naturally formed Yin Souls begin at least at the Hundred-Year Fierce Ghost level. 295
- Their spiritual souls are generally stronger than those of Human Realm cultivators at the same stage, though Ghost Kings' souls are noted to lack the purity and resilience of Zhou Yi's. 287
Devouring culture
Devouring other ghosts is the foundation of Ghost Clan survival and cultivation. Victors consume defeated ghost bodies, while the remaining souls can be refined into demonic treasures. 287
In the Yan Mo Domain, any ghost could kill another regardless of rank, including the Ghost King. This policy produced the Netherworld's strongest but least numerous Ghost Soldiers. 288
Political Structure
| Era / Structure | Rulers | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Earlier recorded order | Ten Ghost Kings | Yan Chixia describes ten Ghost Kings, each ruling a domain and possessing a supreme treasure. 22 23 |
| Pre-unification order | Eight Great Ghost Kings | Tian Yin was the strongest individual Ghost King after defeating Lun Zhuan, while Lun Zhuan retained the greatest territory and military power. 288 |
| Qing Shan's rise | Ninth Ghost King | Qing Shan's emergence and immediate killing of Yan Mo Ghost King caused major upheaval across the realm. 314 |
| Ghost God Cult order | Qing Shan as Ghost Emperor; five subordinate Ghost Kings | The realm was divided into six territories, with Qing Shan holding the central and most resource-rich region. 327 |
Inter-Realm Connections
Human Realm
The Netherworld is linked to the Human Realm by spatial rifts. Yin Sha Spiritual Energy leaking through these rifts can alter the Human Realm's spiritual environment, strengthen Yin-attribute cultivation, and allow ghosts and Ghost Kings to attempt incursions. 264 275
- Sealing a rift reduces the Human Realm's spiritual-energy concentration, while opening too many risks events such as mass ghost manifestations or Ghost Soldier descents. 295
- The Salvation Dao Alliance was formed in part to investigate and seal Netherworld rifts threatening the Human Race. 279
- Conquest of Otherworld allows Human Realm players to possess specially refined Yin Soul carriers and operate within the Netherworld. 293 294
- Players retain strengthened soul power, cultivation methods, and cultivation experience after returning to the Human Realm. 293
Heaven Realm
The Heaven Realm's former cultivators drained spiritual energy from both the Human Realm and Netherworld in an attempt to prolong their lives. Their actions contributed to the decline of both lower realms and the opening of the nine inter-realm rifts. 325
After the Ghost God Cult's unification, Tian Yin and Lun Zhuan left the Netherworld through a rift leading toward the Heaven Realm, sealing the passage behind them. 327
