Background / History
Chen Jinyu was born into the Chen family of the Golden Saber Sect. Chen Hong, Zhou Yi's martial-arts master, was her biological uncle; she was three years younger than Zhou Yi. Her marriage to him was arranged as an alliance between Zhou Yi and the Chen family. 8
On their wedding night, Zhou Yi candidly explained that he intended to preserve his primordial yang for cultivation and that the marriage had been made to obtain the Chen family's internal cultivation method. Chen Jinyu accepted the arrangement with unusual maturity, having seen her sisters married off for family interests. She took responsibility for household affairs, while Zhou Yi gave the Chen family the Xiahou Sword Scripture and True Sword Dao Method as repayment. 8
After learning Zhou Yi's distillation method, Chen Jinyu turned Immortal's Brew into a highly profitable enterprise. She established Immortal's Pavilion as a dedicated trading venue, introduced anonymous bidding, and used the Golden Saber Sect's influence to expand rapidly. Within half a year, she had become a formidable businesswoman capable of outmaneuvering veteran merchants. 10 11
Her enterprise later developed into the Immortal Wine House, Wine God Trading Company, Wine God Farm, and Taibai Tower. The Chen family's business affected at least a million livelihoods across the southern prefectures, giving her influence comparable to Crown Prince Li Zhu. 45
After decades apart from Zhou Yi, Chen Jinyu became the Chen Family's aged but imposing matriarch and adopted Zhou Nian as her grandson. She reunited with Zhou Yi after sixty years, refused the life-extending Condensing Jade Bead, and chose to remain the head of the Chen Family rather than pursue longevity through him. She later disappeared, leaving Zhou Yi a letter. 47 48 53
In later events, Duan Houdao is sent to locate Chen Jinyu as Zhou Yi's reincarnated wife. This younger Chen Jinyu becomes a Dao Alliance cultivator and Qingyun Sect disciple, pursued by the Immortal Court for practicing forbidden old-path cultivation methods. 245 246 258 259
Appearance
At her wedding, Chen Jinyu was described as a refined young woman of noble upbringing, with crescent-moon brows, autumn-wave eyes, and snow-white skin. 8
- Initially appeared as a girl three years younger than Zhou Yi. 8
- Developed an authoritative and noble bearing as controller of Immortal's Brew. 18
- In old age, retained a stern, imposing presence despite becoming frail. 45 47
- Later appeared as a sixteen-year-old girl in purple, with exceptionally fair skin and a beauty compared to fine jade and a lustrous pearl. 246
Personality
Chen Jinyu is practical, adaptable, and deeply aware of the transactional nature of aristocratic marriages. Rather than resent her marriage of convenience, she chose to make herself useful by managing the household and building an independent role through commerce. 8
As a merchant leader, she is assertive and protective of her interests. When threatened over Immortal's Brew, she was willing to spend lavishly to hire protection and fight anyone attempting to seize it. Her business skill made even experienced merchants easy for her to manipulate. 11
Despite her authority, Chen Jinyu remains emotionally attached to Zhou Yi. His ascent to the Innate realm caused her grief because she feared that his cultivation would take him further away from her. Decades later, she remained composed during their reunion, but made clear that seeing him once more was enough to remove her final regret. 19 48
Her later incarnation is resourceful and defiant. She leads pursuers away from her allies, refuses to abandon the Dao Alliance despite its losses, and relies on an innate sense for judging intentions. Exposure to the Immortal Court's overwhelming power makes her more cautious, though not indifferent to her former comrades' sacrifices. 246 248 249
