Ch. 181"Strange" Concern
Plot points and events
- Mo Hei meets Mo Bai, a stranger who looks and feels uncannily familiar. Mo Bai is hurt that Mo Hei doesn’t recognize him, but hides his reaction and presents himself as a passerby.
- Mo Hei reflects on his uncertain identity and forgotten past. After noticing the unusual reactions to his examination results, he fears he may be a “monster.”
- Sensing his distress, Mo Bai offers to help him relax. Though the invitation seems strange, Mo Hei accepts Mo Bai’s hand.
- Mo Bai takes him to the Academy’s Auditorium, uses his access to open it, and plays a series of films. Watching them helps Mo Hei recognize that he still has personal tastes and a sense of judgment despite losing his memories.
- After a film ends, Mo Hei asks why Mo Bai chose to spend time with him. Mo Bai answers indirectly, asking what kinds of films Mo Hei likes.
Character development
- Mo Hei remains anxious about who he is, but shows a willingness to trust Mo Bai. The films give him a small but meaningful reassurance: he still has a personality of his own.
- Mo Bai appears to share a deep history with Mo Hei. He once valued being depended on as Mo Hei’s “shadow,” but now recognizes that neither of them should exist only in relation to the other. His kindness suggests lingering care, though he conceals its source.
Character interactions
- Mo Bai approaches Mo Hei with familiarity, notices his sadness, and tries to ease it through a quiet outing rather than pressing him to explain himself.
- Mo Hei accepts Mo Bai’s help despite his doubts, then eventually asks about Mo Bai’s motives.
- Mo Bai avoids a direct explanation and instead turns the conversation toward Mo Hei’s preferences, inviting him to express his individuality.
Significant themes
- Identity and selfhood: Mo Hei’s lost memories leave him uncertain, but his tastes offer evidence that he remains an individual.
- Trust and care: Mo Hei takes a chance on a stranger, while Mo Bai offers support without demanding disclosure.
- Independence and separation: Mo Bai’s reflection that no one should live as another’s shadow points to the need for both characters to become their own people.
