At the height of the Netherese Empire, Amaunator, Selûne, Shar, the First Goddess of Magic Mystryl, and several other deities had been Netheril's most widely worshipped official gods, collectively known as the Netherese Seven. Their ranks had also included Jergal, the ancient god of death who embodied strife, slaughter, death, and the dead. He was only a quasi-deity now, but back then, he had stood at the very pinnacle of greater deity power.
Among them, the sun god Amaunator had enjoyed a very widespread following in the Netherese Empire, because mages naturally tended toward lawful neutrality as a class. Spellcasters had to obey the rules of the Weave to cast spells, but those rules did not concern themselves with whether the spells were used for good or evil.
As the sun god, the guardian of law, and a symbol of impartiality, Amaunator had been a favorite deity among the Netherese Empire's arcanists and bureaucrats.
After the fall of the Netherese Empire, Amaunator had rapidly declined as his worship dwindled. After struggling to hold on for roughly a century, the sun god of the Realms had finally fallen for a variety of reasons.
The sun god had fallen, but the sun remained. After Amaunator's fall, Lathander had claimed to be his rightful reincarnation. He had thus taken over Amaunator's
