Background / History

Brishisan is the Lord of the Department of Lore, one of the Clock Tower's Twelve Departments. The department traces its lineage to a disciple of King Solomon and preserves knowledge considered forbidden even among Magi; however, it has so few students that Li Mo is its only student requiring regular instruction. Brishisan also states that each Lord's classroom is connected to its own leyline. 2 7 8

In 1987, Brishisan finds the injured Li Mo in Paris after Li Mo apparently passes through his barrier and becomes caught in a battle between Magi. Initially intending to erase Li Mo's memories once he recovered, Brishisan becomes curious when he cannot identify Li Mo's origin and agrees to bring him to the Clock Tower. 2

He personally tests Li Mo's attributes, identifies him as an Average One with all five basic attributes, and explains the principles of attributes, Origins, Magic Circuits, and Mage Characteristics. Li Mo's unprecedented 108 Magic Circuits ultimately convinces Brishisan to accept him as his first disciple. 3 10

As Li Mo's potential attracts the other Clock Tower Monarchs' attention, Brishisan publicly claims Li Mo as his adopted son and warns that the Department of Lore will fight anyone who attempts to target him. He later asks Li Mo to call him “Father” in public and names him the department's future Monarch. 23 24

Brishisan sends Li Mo to study under Kischur Zelretch Schweinorg despite fearing the Second Magician's notoriously dangerous tutelage. After Li Mo returns, Brishisan continues teaching him at the Clock Tower, believing Li Mo's foundations still require work. 28 43

Following Li Mo's two-year absence in the Parallel Worlds, Brishisan visibly develops white hair. He reunites emotionally with Li Mo, accepts Star Essence from him, and later learns directly that Li Mo originated from a technological world without magecraft. Brishisan accepts this revelation without demanding further explanation. 77 79

During the conflict with Gaelingus and the Clock Tower Monarchs, Brishisan is taken hostage but remains recognized as the Department of Lore's Monarch. After the dispute is settled, he gives Li Mo King Solomon's ring—the symbol of the department's Monarch—thereby affirming Li Mo as his successor. 85 92

Behind that demeanor, he is stern, easily exasperated by Li Mo's recklessness, and capable of projecting the intimidating presence expected of a Clock Tower Lord. He becomes especially severe when Li Mo discusses sensitive magical secrets or ignores warnings about danger. 3 9 45 46

He is deeply protective of Li Mo, treating him as both disciple and son. This protectiveness repeatedly outweighs his caution: he confronts the other Monarchs over Li Mo's safety, equips him for dangerous missions, and remains worried about him even when Li Mo's strength surpasses ordinary standards. 23 30 55

Brishisan remains loyal to the Clock Tower and its history, even after its Monarchs threaten him and his disciple. He favors reconciliation when possible, but not at the cost of abandoning the Department of Lore or those under his care. 88 91 92
