Background / History
Arrival and the Great War
Imu came to the planet eight hundred years before the main conflict and concealed an extraterrestrial origin. Alongside the twenty Kings, Imu fought Joy Boy and the Great Kingdom. Victory depended on the National Treasure and was narrow enough that Joy Boy’s power continued to frighten Imu centuries later 92 197 201.
After the war, Imu secretly occupied the Empty Throne while the Five Elders governed publicly. The throne’s supposed vacancy helped persuade affiliated kingdoms that no single sovereign ruled the World Government. Imu’s existence was hidden even from senior Marines and many ordinary Celestial Dragons 61 157 194.
Joy Boy’s body and soul remained imprisoned for eight hundred years. Imu repeatedly forced him to fight challengers who might otherwise have overthrown the Government 183.
God Valley and the Rocks Pirates
The Golden City disaster undermined confidence in the Government and threatened the Heavenly Tribute. When the Five Elders sought guidance, Imu sentenced the Sword-Wielding Elder to death for losing his arm and First Generation Kitetsu to Rono 61.
Imu initially considered Rocks the principal threat because of his connection to the D. Clan. The Elders understood Imu’s orders as requiring Rocks and Rono to be killed at God Valley’s sacrificial ceremony. Every adult Celestial Dragon was required to attend this ceremony, which had taken place every four years for eight centuries 62.
As the battle turned against the Government, Imu replaced the aging Elders with five Holy Knights and ordered the erasure of God Valley, Rocks, and Rono from history. Sacrifices also enabled the resurrection of nineteen Kings, whose intervention shattered the Rocks Pirates without requiring Imu to fight personally 92 111 157 364.
Marineford and the Loss of Imu’s Weapons
Rono’s return and the gathering of all four Emperor crews alarmed Imu, who feared the fulfillment of Joy Boy’s prophecy. Imu deceived dozens of Celestial Dragons into entering a hidden chamber, then drained their lives to revive Joy Boy, Rocks, Roger, and the Former Five Elders 157 158.
The revived force was sent to retrieve Rono’s corpse. Imu controlled Joy Boy remotely, eventually ordering him to unleash Gigantification despite knowing that doing so would permanently expend him as a weapon. Rono copied the technique, defeated Joy Boy, and learned the extent of his captivity before Joy Boy finally died 158 174 177 179 183.
Imu then targeted Marineford with Uranus. Eleven initial shots cost 550 years of lifespan, and further expenditure left Imu at Emperor-Admiral strength. To recover, Imu slaughtered all nineteen Celestial Dragon families in Mary Geoise and absorbed their blood. Rono and his allies subsequently destroyed Uranus 185 187 189 190.
Direct Battle and Defeat of the Old Government
Imu entered the battlefield to block Rono’s attack on the Five Elders and Holy Knights. Their public submission exposed the Government’s hidden hierarchy. Imu initially dominated the duel through superior Haki and divine swordsmanship, but Rono advanced until he could match Imu and create an opening with a Haki-coated kick 193 194 195 196.
Unable to kill Rono cheaply, Imu offered to share world rule. The offer included an admission that the Celestial Dragons had already been sacrificed to restore Imu’s strength. Their surviving officials protested the deaths of their families, only to be punished with Conqueror’s Haki 197 198.
After the Five Elders and Holy Knights were executed, Imu attempted to bargain with the resurrection of Rono’s parents and knowledge beyond Laugh Tale. Rono rejected the resurrection offer but verified Imu’s fear of the GOD Race through Heart-Peering Observation Haki. Imu’s disclosures reframed the Government’s defeat as the beginning of a larger extraterrestrial threat 200 201 203 204.
Rono spared Imu but remained distrustful. Before leaving, he ordered Charlotte Linlin to remove one thousand years of Imu’s lifespan, reducing Imu to a level that Whitebeard or Roger could contain 206.
Marineford Battle Against Kaguya
Later chapters depict another confrontation at Marineford, with references to Rono’s future strength. Imu intervened as Government forces faltered, killed Shanks, and then killed Bullet, Byrnndi World, Redfield, and Ochoku. Rono reversed those deaths through resurrection 337 338 352 353 354 355.
After revealing Nidhogg, Imu defeated Rocks and fought Kaguya Otsutsuki. Imu survived her All-Killing Ash Bones, broke free of her dimensional confinement, and consumed Celestial Dragons to replenish a repeatedly damaged body. Physical attacks failed to destroy Kaguya’s true self, while her chakra attacks penetrated Imu’s defenses 356 357 359 361 362.
With sacrifices running low, Imu summoned the nineteen Kings and demanded their remaining power. Their permanent loss, together with Imu’s lifespan, enabled fusion with Uranus. The resulting attacks erased land and sea around Marineford 363 364 365 369.
Rono ultimately sealed Imu inside a black coffin rather than killing her, explicitly to avoid changing the future. He cast the coffin into the sea before returning to his original world 373.
Imprisonment and the Pursuers
At New Mary Geoise, Imu was later held in a dungeon with roughly a dozen chains. Three black-robed figures with matching ringed eyes approached Pirate Planet, revealing that they had searched for Imu for eight hundred years. Their orders were to kill the planet’s inhabitants but capture Imu alive 412.
Imu sensed their arrival, panicked, and somehow escaped the cell. Appearing before Rono and the assembled survivors, Imu warned that the pursuers had arrived and that everyone was doomed 412.
Appearance
Imu normally conceals both body and face beneath a black robe. At the first direct appearance, only sharp, eagle-like eyes are visible, while the voice gives no clear indication of gender 61.
- Unusual eyes: Described as having double pupils and, in later passages, concentric rings 173 194 352 412.
- Layered disguise: A human-faced mask remains beneath the robe after Rono destroys the hood 196.
- Exposed hands: Slender and fair-skinned; their appearance leads spectators to speculate that Imu is a woman 196.
- Nidhogg form: An enormous black-scaled dragon with a metallic sheen and black flame clouds 356.
- Uranus-fused form: Reaches one hundred thousand meters in length 369.
Personality
Imu presents an emotionless, absolute authority. Failure can warrant death, as demonstrated by the Sword-Wielding Elder’s sentence. Even the other Elders refuse to plead for their longtime companion 61.
Protection and loyalty are transactional. Imu preserves Celestial Dragons because their lives fuel resurrection and other powers, not because their descendants are inherently sacred. Old comradeship does not prevent the extermination of their families when Imu needs strength 157 189 190 198.
Despite eight centuries of rule, Imu remains vulnerable to fear, humiliation, and provocation. Joy Boy’s power is a lasting source of dread, while Rono’s rapid growth and taunts provoke increasingly furious responses. Against Kaguya, Imu alternates between mockery, confidence, and desperate reliance on sacrifices 92 176 177 360 363 365.
Imu is also pragmatic and deeply attached to survival. When victory becomes too costly, Imu offers Rono partnership, resurrection, and information. Later, Imu accepts the removal of a thousand years of lifespan rather than risk death, reasoning that survival leaves future possibilities open 197 200 206.
Abilities & Skills
Haki
Imu has cultivated all three forms of Haki beyond God Level over eight hundred years 195 196.
- Devil Fruit suppression: Superior Haki nullifies Rono’s Strength ability during their initial clash 195.
- Conqueror’s Haki coating: Reinforces blades for combat against elite fighters 354.
- Lethal intimidation: A Conqueror’s Haki wave kills the guards attempting to stop Imu in Mary Geoise 189.
- Internal punishment: Sends Conqueror’s Haki into the Five Elders and Holy Knights’ bodies to inflict intense pain 198.
- Limitation: Haki-infused biting and crushing cannot permanently harm Kaguya’s true self 362.
Divine Swordsmanship
Imu wields two ancient divine blades and initially surpasses Rono in both swordsmanship and Haki 194 195.
- Uses massive sword strikes whose collisions produce enormous shockwaves and waves 195.
- Breaks Shanks’s Griffon and kills him with a strike through the heart 353.
- Kills multiple Emperor-Admiral-level fighters in rapid succession 354.
- Becomes vulnerable when Rono combines swordplay with a kick that disrupts Imu’s stance 196.
Resurrection and Soul Control
Imu uses God’s Secret Technique: Rinne Rebirth, supported by sacrificial formations, to return dead fighters to battle 157 193.
- Revives the nineteen Kings through Celestial Dragon sacrifices 157.
- Revives Joy Boy, Rocks, Roger, and the Former Five Elders from preserved bodies 157 158.
- Controls unwilling subjects, giving them pupils resembling Imu’s own 158 173.
- Speaks through Joy Boy and hears Rono’s taunts through him while remaining in Pangaea Castle 174 176.
- Does not need to control the Former Five Elders directly; their childhood conditioning keeps them obedient 158.
- Joy Boy can awaken only once every hundred years; using his full power permanently consumes him as a trump card 92 177.
- The Kings’ final contribution to Uranus costs their continued existence and prevents further revival 365.
Immortality and Sacrificial Restoration
Imu’s immortality permits an eight-century reign but does not guarantee eternal youth or constant strength 61 189 197.
- Burning lifespan causes aging and steep reductions in combat power 189 206.
- Absorbing Celestial Dragon blood reverses depletion and restores strength 189 190.
- Eating Celestial Dragons heals catastrophic damage to the Nidhogg body and increases its size 361.
- Recovery depends on a finite supply of victims; Kaguya exploits this limitation in a battle of attrition 363.
- Imu can still be sealed and imprisoned despite extraordinary resilience 373 412.
Mythical Zoan: Nidhogg
Nidhogg grants immense size, toughness, vitality, and regeneration. Its physical durability is described as several times greater than Kaido’s Azure Dragon form 356 357.
- Dragon Breath / Dragon Exhalation: Defeats Rocks with one blast and counters Kaguya’s Rabbit Hair Needles with magma-like breath 356.
- Dragon Rage / Dragon’s Wrath: Summons lightning from outer space and unleashes destructive atmospheric force 356 358.
- Roars and movement: Produce earthquakes, hurricane-force winds, and pressure sufficient to break Kaguya’s Amenominaka space despite fiftyfold gravity 359.
- Awakened regeneration: Combined with immortality, allows survival after All-Killing Ash Bones begins disintegrating the body 357.
- Magma barriers: Raises successive walls of natural magma against Kaguya’s Expanding Tailed Beast Bomb; the attack nevertheless breaks through 362.
Uranus Control and Fusion
Imu controls Uranus, the World Government’s hidden National Treasure and one of the Three Ancient Weapons 61 111 369.
- Targets Marineford by drawing a blood cross over its location on a world map 183.
- Combines sixteen beams into island-destroying energy spheres 183 185.
- Each ordinary shot costs at least fifty years of lifespan; the eleven initial shots cost 550 years 187 197.
- Fuses with Uranus after sacrificing lifespan and the Kings’ souls, greatly increasing size and power 369.
- Divine Wrath: Light of Annihilation: Erases a vast region of Marineford, including land, bodies, and seawater 369.
- Uranus: Dragon Talisman: A strongest technique launched against Kaguya, accompanied by a gigantic vortex in the sky 370.
Knowledge of the GOD Race and God Tree
Imu knows the extraterrestrial origins of Devil Fruits and describes them as immature God Fruits produced by the clan’s God Tree. Rono’s Heart Insight confirms that Imu believes these disclosures 201 203.
- Explains that fully matured fruits would lose seawater vulnerability, individual weaknesses, and incompatibility with multiple fruits 203.
- Describes complete absorption of mature fruits as a path to creating life and worlds or destroying a planet; this is a potential outcome, not an ability Imu demonstrates 203.
- Identifies sacrificing all planetary life or obtaining help from already-transformed GODs as ways to accelerate the tree’s maturation 203 204.
- Fears stronger members of the GOD Race, whose claimed abilities include manipulating time and dimensions and destroying planets 201.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Twin divine swords — Ancient blades used during the war against the Great Kingdom and the duel with Rono; their edges are suggested to surpass Supreme Grade Swords 194.
- Black robe and human-faced mask — Conceal Imu’s identity even from the Five Elders and Holy Knights 61 196.
- Empty Throne — Occupied secretly despite the Government’s public claim that no sovereign sits upon it 61 194.

- World map — Records precise island coordinates, except Laugh Tale, and is used to select a Uranus target 183.
- Hidden coffins and enormous straw hat — Kept in a secret chamber associated with Joy Boy and the preserved bodies used for resurrection 91 92 157 158.
Relationships
- Rono — Principal opponent and eventual captor. Imu tries to kill him, use his corpse as a replacement weapon, and then recruit him as a co-ruler; Rono rejects these arrangements but verifies Imu’s warnings about extraterrestrial threats 158 177 197 200 201 206.
- Joy Boy — Ancient rival, prisoner, and unwilling weapon. Imu fears his power, imprisons his body and soul, and forces him to fight Government challengers for centuries 92 177 183.
- Five Elders — Public administrators beneath Imu. Their obedience is reinforced through childhood conditioning, threats, and punishment; Imu replaces or abandons them when they cease to be useful 61 92 158 198.
- Holy Knights — Direct servants who receive appointments and military orders from Imu, including instructions to secure Rono’s body 92 140 162.
- Celestial Dragons — Descendants of the twenty Kings, not Imu’s blood relatives. Their protection conceals their use as sacrifices and sources of restoration 157 190 198 361.
- Nineteen Kings — Former comrades whose souls remain available through Imu’s power. Imu invokes eight centuries of protection for their descendants to demand their final sacrifice 364 365 369.
- Figarland Delsok — A particularly respected former King who was stronger than Imu eight hundred years earlier; helps persuade the remaining Kings to commit their power 365 366.
- Kaguya Otsutsuki — Opponent whose immortality and chakra techniques frustrate Imu’s physical attacks and sacrificial regeneration, eventually forcing the Uranus fusion 359 362 363 369.
- Three black-robed pursuers — Figures with matching ringed eyes who have searched for Imu for eight hundred years and intend to capture Imu alive while exterminating the planet’s inhabitants 412.
