Background / History

Meeting and Mentoring Rono

Roger first appears aboard Rono’s ship, the Revenge, during a supply stop in the East Blue. He has only recently begun sailing and has no crewmates yet. Treating their encounter as fate, he immediately invites Rono to join him and “turn this world upside down” 3.

Rono refuses because their ambitions differ, but challenges Roger to prove his strength as a prospective captain. Their Haki contest becomes a physical duel, with Roger initially overpowering Rono through superior strength. As Roger notices his opponent improving between exchanges, he deliberately pushes him harder. They fight through the night before Roger stops at Rono’s apparent plateau, accepts his independence, and shares his liquor 4 5.

Roger subsequently helps Rono attack the defenders of the East Blue’s Heavenly Tribute, killing a fleeing CP0 agent. They divide the captured treasure: Rono takes the Devil Fruits and equipment while accepting only a tenth of the treasure, leaving Roger delighted at the money available for wine. They part ways a few days later so Roger can pursue his own voyage 8 9 11 16.

Alliance at God Valley

Roger recruits Rayleigh, Gaban, and other companions after leaving Rono. When Garp contacts him about the World Government’s planned assault at God Valley, Roger agrees that Rocks’s ambition could make the world worse—but refuses to allow Rono to be sacrificed. He instead takes his crew to Hachinosu to warn his friend 29 64.

Their reunion immediately becomes a destructive spar. Roger and Rono exchange matching Divine Departure attacks before Rocks intervenes to protect the island. Roger then reveals the Government’s full mobilization and commits his crew to the coming battle. His support is explicitly for Rono, not Rocks’s ambition to become King of the World; he promises to oppose Rocks if necessary 65 66 67 68.

At God Valley, the Roger Pirates’ unexpected arrival substantially strengthens the pirate alliance and enrages the Government leadership. Roger fights alongside the Rocks Pirates, but the arrival of the ancient Kings and additional Government fighters eventually forces a retreat. He initially refuses to leave Rono and Rocks behind, then accepts Rono’s insistence that the others escape 77 78 96 97.

Pirate King and Execution

After Rocks dies and Rono is presumed dead, Roger mourns his friend before resolving to continue his adventures and uncover the world’s truth. His crew also discovers two abandoned babies, one red-haired and one red-nosed. Roger jokingly suggests that they might be Rocks and Rono reborn; Shanks is later confirmed to have been found and raised by the Roger Pirates 102 351.

Roger becomes one of the era’s three leading pirates alongside Whitebeard and Golden Lion. In Sea Circle Calendar 1498, he conquers the Grand Line and is hailed as the Pirate King. He reaches Laugh Tale with Rayleigh, Gaban, and Bullet, learning the world’s hidden history. His declaration before execution launches the Great Pirate Era 102 173.

Roger never forgets Rono and continues mourning his presumed death. Decades later, that friendship motivates Rono to rescue Roger’s son, Ace, at Marineford as repayment for Roger’s help 107 143.

Imu’s Puppet and Resurrection

Roger reappears at Marineford with Rocks and the former Five Elders. His unnatural eyes reveal that he has been revived and placed under Imu’s control. Although unable to control his actions, Roger remains conscious and suffers from being forced to fight against Rono 173 191.

Rono defeats the controlled Roger and stabs him through the heart, breaking Imu’s hold. Roger briefly regains his freedom, thanks Rono, greets his former companions, and apologizes to Ace before dying. Rono then uses the blood of fallen Celestial Dragons to activate Rinne Rebirth, followed by Return Power to complete his restoration. Healthy and free of his former illness, Roger eagerly rejoins his comrades against the World Government 191 192.

Renewed Battles Against the World Government

Roger continues following Rono’s lead after his revival, including during the confrontation in Wano, where Oden’s retainers and Momonosuke recognize him as Oden’s former captain 211.

During a later Marineford confrontation, Roger battles the restored Figarland Garling, whose Demon Slayer meets Divine Departure evenly. When Garling attacks Shanks for rejecting his Celestial Dragon ancestry, Roger intervenes so Shanks does not have to fight his own father. Roger also joins the pirates’ renewed assault after Imu’s appearance, despite initially being shaken by Imu’s overwhelming presence 348 351 353.

The New World Government

After Imu’s defeat, Roger helps govern from New Mary Geoise alongside Whitebeard, Rocks, and other former pirates. They implement Rono’s reforms, abolishing the Heavenly Tribute and reducing nations’ tax burden. Within just over a year, piracy falls to roughly a tenth of its former level, while serious crime drops below one percent of its Great Pirate Era level. Roger and Whitebeard retain Poseidon as the new order’s decisive deterrent 374.

Roger dislikes the restrictions of rulership and plans to sail again with Rayleigh, Gaban, and his old crew once stability is secured. Until then, he remains with the other leaders and helps protect Rono’s legacy. When Poseidon’s giant Sea Kings become agitated, Roger joins Whitebeard and Kaido in subduing them without killing them 375 376 378.

Appearance

Roger’s first appearance emphasizes his familiar straw hat, broad smile, and shabby traveling clothes rather than the grandeur of his future title 3.

  • Straw hat worn at the beginning of his voyage 3.
  • Patched bag carried during his first meeting with Rono 3.
  • Unnatural double pupils while controlled by Imu 173.
  • Healthy, prime-age body after Rono’s resurrection and restoration 192.

Personality

Roger is cheerful, spontaneous, and confident. He invites Rono to become a crewmate almost immediately, trusts his instincts about people, and readily turns their reunion into a spar without considering the damage to Hachinosu. His love of wine also makes him enthusiastic about their captured treasure 3 4 11 66.

His generosity is particularly evident in his mentorship of Rono: instead of resenting Rono’s rapid growth, he helps cultivate it and accepts that his friend should follow an independent path. His loyalty can be extreme—the Roger Pirates are reported to have destroyed an entire country’s army after someone insulted a crewmate 5 65.

Roger distinguishes friendship from political agreement. He risks his life for Rono while refusing to endorse Rocks’s proposed world domination. Even after helping establish a better government, he values adventure over authority and longs to return to sea 64 68 375.

  • Produces violent weather, huge waves, and lightning during a sustained Haki collision 4.

  • Turns Ace pitch-black through weapon coating 4.

  • Notices Rono becoming stronger with each exchange 5.
  • Recognizes when Rono’s improvement appears to reach a bottleneck 5.
  • Locates the Heavenly Tribute stored in a ship’s hold 9.
  • Initially misjudges Rono’s Haki because Rono acquires new abilities during the fight 4.

Swordsmanship — Divine Departure

Divine Departure is Roger’s signature finishing technique: a powerful sword-aura slash strengthened by Haki 27 66.

  • Unleashes a wave of sword aura described as capable of destroying a mountain 66.
  • Can be performed one-handed, with blood-red Conqueror’s Haki running through the slash 348.
  • Is learned by Rono through their early battle and later taught by Roger to Shanks 27 351.
  • Meets Garling’s Demon Slayer in an evenly matched exchange 348.

Knowledge of the World’s Secrets

Roger’s voyage to Laugh Tale gives him knowledge of the hidden history of the world 173 368.

  • Knows the history associated with Joy Boy and the Great Kingdom 173.
  • Recognizes the significance of the ancient Kings’ actions and explains their connection to the world’s past 368.
  • Provides Rono with information about Pluton being an enormous warship operable by anyone who masters its technology 211.
