Background / History

Childhood aboard Roger’s ship

Shanks joined the Roger Pirates at two years old and spent more than ten years as an apprentice sailor. He grew up alongside Buggy, whose friendship he continued to defend despite their frequent quarrels. Roger personally gave him his straw hat before disbanding the crew 164 165 172.

He did not accompany Roger to Laugh Tale: when Buggy fell ill, Shanks stayed behind to care for him. After witnessing Roger’s execution in Loguetown, he separated from Buggy and returned to the West Blue to train and absorb what he had learned during the crew’s adventures 163 193 300.

Delayed departure

Shanks intended to begin his own pirate career shortly after turning seventeen. Ohara’s Buster Call and the subsequent Marine and World Government searches throughout the West Blue forced him to postpone sailing until near the end of the year 163.

He finally departed Brivor Village in Kado Gen’s fishing boat, which its owner protested he had stolen. After killing the Lord of the Coast with Divine Departure, Shanks began proclaiming his ambitions—only for Adrian to descend from the sky and interrupt him 163.

Appearance

Shanks is initially depicted as a short, slender young man with bright red hair and a yellow straw hat 32 163.

  • Early clothing: An open shirt and sandals at his first appearance; later, a white-and-green striped shirt, patterned brown cropped trousers, and flip-flops 32 163.
  • Left-eye scars: Three diagonal scars inflicted by Marshall D. Teach; they still ache when Shanks touches them on Bird Mountain Island 297.
  • Sword hand: Usually fights left-handed, though he also uses his right hand in documented battles 186 387 390.

Personality

Shanks is sociable, impulsive, and fond of drinking and banquets. His crew freely mocks him, while Beckman handles many practical concerns—including restricting his everyday spending money. Shanks can abandon an ominous feeling simply because Buggy has offered to pay for drinks 234 300 308.

His easygoing behavior conceals fierce independence. He repeatedly refuses to abandon his goal of captaining his own crew, even after dozens of defeats by Adrian. He also rejects a Shichibukai appointment without discussion and refuses to eat any Devil Fruit, including a legendary Mythical Zoan 168 191 281.

Shanks is protective rather than indiscriminately violent. Adrian’s casual killing of Spiral Dure conflicts with his principles; threats against Buggy immediately bring out his serious side. He also protects Joseph Jangster from Daifuku’s Smoke Demon and later stops a giant swordsman from attacking Buggy without escalating the confrontation 177 186 235 298.

He prefers not to display distress in front of his companions. After losing the Gum-Gum Fruit to Adrian, he reframes the outcome optimistically: the fruit is now stored in what he considers the safest place at sea 454.

Abilities & Skills

Swordsmanship

Swordplay is one of Shanks’s principal strengths, alongside Conqueror’s Haki 32 111.

  • Divine Departure: A technique passed down from Roger. Shanks kills the Lord of the Coast with one strike, but Adrian counters it decisively during their early duels 163 165 168.
  • Flying Slashes: Launches crescent-shaped sword aura at distant targets, including Daifuku and Bald Eagle 189 449.
  • Defensive precision: Blocks a giant swordsman’s naginata with Kogarashi and forces him to withdraw 298.
  • Sustained dueling: Fights Mihawk for four days during the tournament semifinal 306.
  • Limit: Even at Level 100, his rapid sword barrage places no meaningful pressure on Adrian 390.

Conqueror’s Haki

Shanks uses Conqueror’s Haki both to impose his will and to create openings against strong opponents 168 234 293.

  • Resists Adrian’s Spiritual Pressure during their fiftieth early duel, though maintaining that resistance rapidly exhausts him 168.
  • Interrupts Enel’s attack sequence long enough to escape a disadvantageous position 234.
  • Knocks out most of Acid Mika’s crew 293.
  • Learns Conqueror’s Haki Infusion from Charlotte Linlin and prepares to use it against Adrian 390.
  • Adrian regards Shanks’s future Conqueror’s Haki as a particularly desirable ability to acquire, rather than an already proven superiority over every other user 111 173.

Armament and Observation Haki

Shanks demonstrates both forms during his earliest fights with Adrian and later uses all three types of Haki against Enel 165 235.

  • Armament: Coats his cutlass and Kogarashi to strengthen attacks and block incoming blows 168 234.
  • Observation: Evades Daifuku’s strongest slash and senses an unseen watcher outside the Tailless Monkey tavern 189 300.
  • Limits: Armament does not prevent his ordinary cutlass from breaking against Adrian’s Spiritual Pressure Lightsaber. His heightened Observation also does not solve Bald Eagle’s unfamiliar calamity manipulation 168 449.

Advanced Luck Halo (Pseudo)

Adrian’s panel identifies Shanks as possessing the rare Advanced Luck Halo (Pseudo) 164.

  • A peach transforms into the Float-Float Fruit just as the starving Shanks is about to eat it; Adrian attributes the event to his extraordinary luck 171.
  • His participation in Adrian’s Devil Fruit rebirth experiments does not guarantee success: the attempt involving Spiral Dure fails 177.
  • He later fishes the Great Grade Sword Griffin from the waters near Edd War, astonishing Adrian 387.
  • Adrian interprets the “Pseudo” designation as connected to Shanks’s temporary position as a protagonist-like figure before Luffy’s era; this remains Adrian’s interpretation 164.

Physique and Combat Judgment

Shanks combines unusual endurance with an ability to adapt under pressure 165 166 187.

  • Continues challenging Adrian despite repeated injuries and defeats 165 167 168.
  • Replenishes heavily depleted energy by eating large quantities of food, while still requiring medicine and treatment for serious wounds 166 171.
  • Possesses Balanced Physique, the specialty Adrian selects as his reward after their fiftieth duel 168.
  • Targets Daifuku rather than wasting energy fighting only his Devil Fruit construct, using the Smoke Demon’s own attack to close the distance 187.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Roger’s straw hat — Personally entrusted to him before the Roger Pirates disbanded. Adrian uses it to persuade Shiki that Shanks is Roger’s chosen successor 172.
  • Sailor’s Cutlass — His early weapon; progressively damaged during Adrian’s training fights and shattered in their fiftieth duel 167 168.
  • Kogarashi — A famous sword formerly belonging to Shiki, later wielded by Shanks against Daifuku, Enel, and Mihawk. Its transfer to Shanks is not shown in the supplied passages 170 186 234 305.
  • Griffin — A Great Grade rapier recovered by fishing near Edd War; replaces Kogarashi as his later weapon 359 387 390.
  • Red Force — The Red Hair Pirates’ ship 234.
  • Vivre Card — Gives pieces to Adrian and Mihawk before they part on Bird Mountain Island 318.

Relationships

  • Gol D. Roger — Former captain and formative influence. Shanks inherits his straw hat and seeks to complete what Roger could not, though he initially knows nothing about Roger’s wife and child 164 166 172.
  • Adrian / White Ghost — Coercive early mentor, repeated opponent, and creditor. Adrian initially presses him into a deckhand role, later explains that he wants to nurture rather than recruit him, and continues testing his growth 165 193 390.
  • Buggy — Childhood companion and fellow Roger apprentice. Their constant insults conceal an enduring bond; Shanks stays behind with him before Laugh Tale and defends him from later threats 164 235 298 300.
  • Benn Beckman — Vice-captain and trusted practical counterweight. Shanks relies on his judgment, especially when Beckman prevents a disastrous dispute with Adrian over the Gum-Gum Fruit 234 308 453.
  • Enel — Rival and rejected prospective crewmate. Their first extended spar leads to Shanks’s recruitment offer; Enel later repeatedly pursues him and demands his return to Visalia 203 234 235.
  • Dracule Mihawk — Swordsmanship rival and drinking companion. Their four-day tournament duel is followed by more than half a year exchanging sword techniques 306 307 390.
  • Lumi — The Oro Jackson’s Ship Spirit, who remembers his childhood, embarrasses him with private recollections, and assists with medicine and treatment 164 166 167.
  • Crocus — Former ship doctor who warmly recognizes him and develops a treatment plan for Adrian’s severe sword wound 173 174.
  • Golden Lion Shiki — Former enemy of Roger’s crew whose preserved spirit accepts Shanks as Roger’s successor. Adrian subsequently appoints him Shanks’s swordsmanship instructor 169 172 182.
  • Nico Olvia — Leaves Visalia with Shanks and remains aboard the Red Force as the crew’s archaeologist 318.
  • Marshall D. Teach — Inflicts the scars over his left eye. Shanks remembers Teach’s sleepless fighting and suspects he conceals important secrets 297.
  • Charlotte Katakuri — Ally against the revived Charlotte Linlin 390 449.
  • Elbaf’s Giants — Friends and potential allies. Their cloud route helps the Red Hair Pirates reach Totto Land quickly 359 387.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Adrian’s forced apprenticeship

After Shanks boards the Nether Abyss, Adrian insists that he serve as a deckhand before becoming a captain. Their training becomes a sequence of brutal defeats: forty-four in the initial session, forty-nine before the final challenge, and fifty after Adrian breaks his cutlass and gravely wounds him. The fiftieth victory completes Adrian’s C-rank Red-Haired mission 165 167 168.

Shiki’s arrival interrupts the aftermath, leaving Shanks untreated for three days. Doctor Moe judges his wound and starvation too serious for shipboard treatment, prompting a trip to Crocus at Twin Capes 170 171 174.

Experiments and independence

Adrian involves Shanks in Devil Fruit rebirth experiments and arranges instruction from Shiki’s spirit. During the food competition incident, Shanks protects Joseph Jangster and faces Charlotte Daifuku without Adrian immediately rescuing him 177 182 186 187.

On Visalia, Shanks spars with Enel and tries to recruit both him and Doctor Moe. He eventually escapes the island; Olvia accompanies him, and he establishes the Red Hair Pirates 203 306 318.

Rise of the Red Hair Pirates

By year 1505, Shanks commands a lively, close-knit crew sailing toward Sabaody. His rivalry with Enel continues, while the Five Elders consider using him to restrain other pirates. He refuses their Shichibukai offer and later defeats their appointed Shichibukai Acid Mika, disrupting a World Government foothold in the New World 233 235 281 293.

At Bird Mountain Island, Shanks loses a four-day semifinal to Mihawk but remains to watch Adrian’s final and subsequent battle with Whitebeard. His reunion with Adrian revives their Devil Fruit debt dispute; the amount is settled at two fruits before Adrian leaves 306 308 316 317 318.

Totto Land and Elbaf

After joining Katakuri against the resurrected Big Mom, Shanks seeks help from his giant friends to prevent further upheaval in the New World. Adrian later meets him near Elbaf and confirms his Level 100 strength in a duel atop Nidhogg’s severed head 359 387 390.

Heavenly Tribute raid

Shanks leads his crew against a Heavenly Tribute ship to obtain the Gum-Gum Fruit. A prophecy tells him that the fruit will reveal its power only in the hands of a particular person; he intends to give it to a worthy boy rather than eat it himself 448 449 454.

Bald Eagle’s Calamity-Calamity Fruit defeats Shanks’s attempts to land sword attacks and redirects one slash into the Red Force. Adrian takes over the fight, then claims both the tribute ship and the Gum-Gum Fruit. Beckman persuades Shanks to yield rather than confront him 449 450 453.

The intervention leaves the Red Hair Pirates with fewer losses and Shanks without the serious hidden injuries Adrian had anticipated. With his debts settled, Shanks reassures Beckman that Adrian cannot eat the fruit and that the Impenetrable Fortress is an exceptionally secure place to keep it 453 454.
