"How did this happen?"
"Obviously, someone made a whole lot of copies of the ledger and scattered them all over Gotham City." Falcone suppressed his anger. "Recall everyone we sent out to search for it, and get someone to doctor our accounts. Hurry! They've seen right through us, underwear and all."
"Boss, not our underwear. Yours," Riddler corrected him.
"Maybe it was that Holiday Killer. Hasn't he been going after Falcone this whole time?" Falcone's nephew, Johnny Vitti, reminded him. "He's already killed several of our friends and family."
"It must have been him..." Falcone nodded. "Ever since his last murder, I've been digging up information on him. I already have a suspect in mind."
"Who?"
"The district attorney, Harvey Dent," Falcone said with certainty.
The roomful of villains and Falcone's confidants fell silent. Even Mad Hatter looked at Falcone as though he were an idiot.
"With all due respect, boss, that's impossible," Poison Ivy said. "I've dealt with Harvey Dent. He's a hopeless stickler for the rules. Why would he use methods like this against you?"
"Yeah, even Batman would be a more plausible suspect than Harvey Dent."
"It can't be Batman either. He never kills."
"Are you sure? He's probably the one who left Mad Hatter like this, right?"
Everyone looked at Mad Hatter, who was still lying in a hospital bed, and suddenly felt that Batman's no-killing rule might not be so reliable after all.
"I don't care who he is. I want him dealt with!" Falcone looked at the supervillains in the room. "Whoever finds the Holiday Killer and brings him to me gets ten percent more than the payment I promised!"
"All right, I'll get right on it." Poison Ivy whistled, and the flowers and plants around her began to writhe, as though passing along a message.
"If we want to find the Holiday Killer, we'll probably have to wait until he strikes," Johnny mused. "What's the next holiday coming up?"
"I'm an animal, and I can stick to a wall. What am I?" Riddler suddenly asked.
"A gecko?" Johnny thought for a moment. "Is there a Gecko Day?"
"The answer is a seal," Riddler said, twirling his cane. "March first is International Seal Day."
"You even know that?" Johnny asked in surprise.
"Of course. I'm the smartest man in the world."
Johnny fell silent. They were on the same side now, after all, so he suppressed the urge to make a snide remark.
"Then please use that world's-smartest brain of yours to help us find the Holiday Killer," Falcone said.
"Before we met today, I already set up an ambush at Gotham City Zoo. Once the Holiday Killer arrives, we can capture him," Riddler said confidently.
Seeing how confident he was only made Falcone feel less certain. He had paid a fortune to hire this guy. Would he really be any use?
February 27.
Gotham City Zoo announced that it would be holding a series of events to celebrate International Seal Day.
The zoo went all out promoting the festivities. Animal balloons of every kind, colorful float parades, and countless fireworks and streamers made sure the whole of Gotham City heard the news.
"They actually celebrate this?" Jason began to question everything he knew.
"Businesses won't pass up any chance to make money these days. Celebrating every holiday is just the bare minimum. Eventually, they'll probably invent holidays out of puns." Roland didn't find it strange at all.
"But isn't this a bit over the top...?" Jason still felt that something was off. "How much must all this publicity cost? Can Gotham Zoo even make its money back?"
"That's not our concern," Roland said. "This is a chance for us to make money too. We should get ready."
"Yeah, we can sell drinks, snacks, souvenirs, and stuff to the visitors inside the zoo." Jason was already very familiar with the routine. "But before, we always had to work with a gang to sell this stuff. We just handled the selling, and a big chunk of the money went to the gang."
"That is a problem..." Roland thought it over. Just imagining his underlings' hard-earned money going to a gang made him wince, but if they didn't pay that protection money, the gang would inevitably target them.
Rubbing his temples, Roland checked his goodwill value.
[Current goodwill value: 968]
After treating his underlings to meals over the past few days and doing various good deeds in his daily life, he had accumulated a sizable amount of goodwill value.
"How about this? Is there anywhere nearby where I can donate blood? I'll go first, and we can talk about this when I get back." Roland decided to scrape together enough for a ten-pull and try his luck, hoping to get an ability that could solve the problem.
"Sinai Medical Center. Don't you already know that?"
"I'm not talking about selling blood. I mean donating it for free," Roland said.
"Donating blood? For free?" Jason had to think for a while before he remembered. "I think the Thomas Wayne Memorial Clinic has a program for that."
"All right, I'll head over now."
Since Falcone had given up on finding the ledger and shifted its focus to falsifying the accounts, Gotham City's streets had become a little more peaceful. Of course, robberies, assaults, thefts, and other crimes were still common, so Roland still had to send out Kamaitachi to find a relatively safe route.
[Goodwill value +70]
After donating 400 cc of blood, Roland received only seventy goodwill points. He suspected the doctor had probably pocketed some of his blood.
Without even leaving the clinic, Roland found an empty spot and started his ten-pull.
[A beautifully bound Bible] [A handwritten Bible] [A slightly damaged Bible] [A Bible reeking of mildew] [A Pure Silver Cross] [A Pure Gold Cross] [An iron Crown of Thorns] [30 Tyr Silver Coins] [A bronze replica of the Ark of the Covenant]
As Roland watched a pile of ordinary items pop out, his temples began to throb.
Was his luck really this awful? Aside from the Pure Gold Cross, which was worth a little money, what the hell was all this junk?
"Last pull. If I don't get anything good... I'll have to find another way." Roland gritted his teeth and tapped the wheel one last time.
At last, the pointer lived up to his hopes and stopped on a glowing slot.
[Kirei Kotomine's martial art: Bajiquan]
All sorts of martial arts techniques flooded Roland's mind, leaving him briefly dazed, but he recovered a moment later.
He walked to a quiet, deserted spot and struck a roadside tree with the Charging Hammer from the Eight Forms of Vajra, snapping a waist-thick London plane clean in two.
