Background / History

In 757, the second year of Zhide, Li Heng ruled as Emperor Suzong of Tang amid the An Lushan Rebellion. Earlier threats against him had left him distrustful of both civil and military officials. He relied instead on Empress Zhang and eunuchs including Yu Chao'en, Li Fuguo, and Cheng Yuanzhen, allowing their influence over the court to grow 426.

Roland declares that “Don is finished” after listing abuses under Suzong, including selling offices, suppressing his father, and handing power to regional commanders. Green Lantern counters that Suzong is only the dynasty’s eighth emperor, with thirteen more to follow 426.

Story Role

• Dragon Emperor Temple — Roland, Green Lantern, and the Flash travel to 757 and witness General Shan’s attack on a temple sheltering Bi Yao and her baby 426.
• Li Jiong’s resistance — After the temple’s destruction, Li Jiong learns of the hardship caused by imperial rule and uses a Green Lantern Ring to protect villagers from soldiers and tax collectors. He later fights his way into the imperial palace to challenge Suzong 427 429.
• Li Chu’s reign — Li Chu later calls himself emperor and proposes a Shaowei Feast, dismissing Roland’s observation that the banquet had fallen out of use under Emperor Xuanzong 438.

• “Don” is the rendering used for 唐 in the 757 setting; it refers to the Tang dynasty, not to Don Allen, Barry Allen’s son 365 426.
