Background / History

Joker has a recurring pattern of escaping Arkham Asylum to stage crimes aimed at Batman. After one escape, he and Harley plan to kidnap Commissioner Gordon. Joker poses as a dentist and traps Gordon in a dental chair, but Batman interrupts. Batman’s criticism of the scheme as uncreative sends Joker back to his hideout to devise a more spectacular way to kill him 19 21.

Harley’s devotion does not protect her from Joker’s cruelty. He berates her for knocking Batman unconscious, rejects her attempts to comfort him, and later throws her into the sea immediately after she frees him 21 23.

Appearance

Joker’s presentation changes with his schemes rather than following one fixed costume.

• Green hair and green eyes are described during separate confrontations 55 212.
• He dresses in a suit, bow tie, makeup, and perfume before launching a citywide attack 53.
• His skin appears white when he compares his reflection with Jester’s 331.

Personality

Joker treats crime as a performance and Batman as its indispensable audience. Being called unimaginative or a bad comedian visibly angers him, while Batman making an April Fools’ joke delights him 21 54 55. He describes their cycle plainly: “I commit crimes, you catch me. That’s my wonderful life” 212.

His attachment to Batman is also a vulnerability. After Arkham treatment temporarily makes him affectionate and seemingly harmless, Harley’s provocations fail to restore his aggression; Roland’s claim that Batman cares more about Catwoman does 102. Joker later rejects an outside influence on Batman’s mind, insisting that the altered Batman is not his familiar opponent 211 212.

• Gordon’s kidnapping and Harley’s trap: Joker’s dental-office ambush fails. Harley later frees him during another confrontation, only for him to throw her into the sea 21 23.
• Fear Toxin and April Fools’ Day: He steals Fear Toxin, poisons Gotham with laughing gas, and stages threats to hostages and Batman. Roland saves the hostages; Batman captures Joker after his final fake-surrender trick 49 53 54 55.
• Arkham treatment: Electroshock, hypnosis, drugs, and dietary therapy alter his behavior, but jealousy over Batman remains strong enough to provoke an attack 102.
