Ch. 321Snorlax: “Sleep Matters More Than the Competition”
Plot and battle events
- The tournament quarterfinals begin under a three-Pokémon format. Lacey wins her match decisively, while Akari’s Slowbro sweeps its opponent’s team, setting up a teacher–student semifinal between Akari and Lacey.
- Ash defeats Kieran in a close, nearly fifteen-minute battle. Pikachu’s Iron Tail finishes Hydrapple after its Fickle Beam fails. Carmine mourns Kieran’s loss and declares that Mingyou and Akari must carry Kitakami’s hopes, despite Mingyou pointing out that he is Paldean.
- Mingyou faces Gloria in the other Group B match. Gloria wears her Galar League uniform, signaling that she is taking the battle seriously, though Dynamax cannot be used in Unova.
- Gloria leads with Corviknight; Mingyou unexpectedly chooses Gabite, having anticipated Cinderace. Gabite’s Dragon Dance and fierce attacks cannot overcome Corviknight’s defenses. It is knocked out by Body Press, but manages to injure Corviknight’s wing with a last-second Dragon Claw.
- Mingyou recalls Gabite kindly and sends out his next Pokémon: a shiny Snorlax, which promptly rolls over and continues sleeping. The chapter ends on this comic cliffhanger.
Character developments and interactions
- Akari’s undisclosed team and dominant Slowbro performance make her seem increasingly formidable. Lacey recognizes the challenge ahead but hopes to push her teacher into revealing more of her strength.
- Kieran loses, but Mingyou believes he can still value the hard-fought battle. Carmine instead channels her disappointment into pressure on Mingyou, treating him and Akari as Kitakami’s adopted representatives.
- Gloria reveals a more serious, competitive side through her uniform and battle choices. She favors bold, forceful combat over safer tactics and is impressed by Gabite’s battle-loving spirit.
- Mingyou shows consideration toward Gabite after its defeat, while Gabite’s enthusiasm for fighting is emphasized. The crowd—and Gloria—are surprised by how much damage the smaller Pokémon manages to inflict.
Significant themes
- Competition and resilience: Victory is not the only measure of a meaningful battle; Kieran’s effort matters even in defeat.
- Belonging and identity: Mingyou’s Paldean origin contrasts with Carmine’s insistence that he is now part of Kitakami.
- Battling styles and expectations: Gloria’s aggressive approach clashes with more cautious strategy, while Mingyou’s unexpected team choices keep opponents and spectators guessing.
- Comic contrast: The intense tournament atmosphere is undercut by Snorlax’s complete indifference to battling.
