Power Progression

Background and history

Hei Ranbai is one of Bai Ranmo’s clones. His public history is that he survived a bandit massacre in a neighboring village and was taken in by Old Jack of Holy Soul Village. Bai Ranmo’s consciousness uses Hei Ranbai as an active body 4. At the village’s Martial Soul Awakening, Su Yuntao dismisses his shadow power as weak, while Hei Ranbai conceals his excitement at gaining access to the Ten Shadows Technique 9.

Old Jack secures him a work-study place at Nuoding Junior Soul Master Academy alongside Tang San. Hei Ranbai does not become Yu Xiaogang’s disciple, despite Yu’s repeated interest in studying his unusual Martial Soul. He later leaves with Toji Fushiguro, presented as his birth father, and agrees to meet Tang San again at Shrek Academy 9 10 19 52. Toji and Bai Cangyue’s roles as his parents were arranged as part of Bai Ranmo’s clone scheme; their public reunion takes place during the Genius Tournament 30 34 84.

After reuniting with Tang San, Hei Ranbai accepts the position of Tang Sect Vice Sect Master and learns Tang San’s Mysterious Heaven Skill. Because he is a clone, the knowledge becomes available to Bai Ranmo’s other clones as well 137 145. He later joins Shrek Academy and fights for its tournament team 143 185 244.

Hei Ranbai is nine years old during his level-37 duel with Bai Ranmo. He has dark eyes and is shown dressed in black 55 86 90.

Personality

Hei Ranbai is generally quiet and composed, but fights directly and trains hard under Toji. He is resourceful when a Shikigami cannot be beaten by force, using explosives to overcome Round Deer’s healing 55 86.

His friendship with Tang San mixes genuine moments with deliberate manipulation. Hei Ranbai gives him money, herbs, and a Soul Bone, and is genuinely touched when Tang San offers to share the Mysterious Heaven Skill. He also regards Tang San as a valuable source of Emotion Points and later stages a painful break with him to provoke a reaction 52 65 97 137 277.

Ten Shadows Technique

Hei Ranbai’s Martial Soul connects him to ten Shikigami. The Divine Dogs can be summoned without a ritual; other Shikigami must be defeated in Subjugation before they will obey him. His summons grow stronger with him and can return after death rather than being permanently lost 10.

• Divine Dogs / Divine Dog: Totality — The dogs scout and fight; their combined form, Bruce, can use Medusa’s Gaze after absorbing a Head Soul Bone 10 51 53 87.
• Nue — A flying, lightning-using Shikigami subdued with help from Bruce, Shadow Binding, and a Silent Sleeve Arrow 53 164.
• Round Deer — Provides powerful healing. Hei Ranbai bound it with Toads and used explosives to overcome its regeneration during Subjugation 55 87.
• Mahoraga — Carries the Sword of Extermination and can adapt to attacks. Hei Ranbai delays reaching Soul King to make its Subjugation ritual more manageable 90 164 205.

Shikigami can absorb Soul Bones, giving Hei Ranbai access to abilities he does not absorb personally; a Soul Bone’s Soul Power does not transfer to him through the summon. Mahoraga later absorbs a Divine Seed, leading Hei Ranbai to consider whether his other Shikigami could do the same 53 87 329.
