Background / History
Tang Shan was an ordinary person in his previous life, killed by a reckless dump-truck driver rather than during a heroic rescue. He reincarnated as an abandoned infant on Douluo Continent, wrapped in a blanket with a card bearing his name. Su Haichao and Su Yuntao found him in an alley and adopted him, retaining the name written on the card 1.
Raised in their Nuoding City household, Tang Shan became genuinely attached to his adoptive family. By age three, he was already using memories of the original Douluo stories to advise them. He persuaded Su Yuntao to train his body for a year before obtaining his first Soul Ring and helped redirect the hunt from the dangerous Star Dou Great Forest to a managed Soul Hunting Forest 1 2.
Without a special cultivation method or an external “cheat,” he relied on library research, experimentation, and remembered concepts from his previous world. His attempts to cultivate before awakening failed; meanwhile, his anonymous writings earned recognition from Spirit Hall before he was old enough to awaken his own Martial Soul 2 3 10 12.
Appearance
- Unusually rapid growth: Already 1.4 meters tall before his awakening at six, and nearly 1.5 meters after using whale rubber 12 14.
- Muscular build: Has clearly defined muscles despite his childhood age; before turning seven, he already resembles a boy in his early teens 15 20.
- Post-breakthrough height: Stands 1.7 meters normally and 1.83 meters with his Martial Soul active immediately after absorbing his first ring 27.
- Martial Soul mark: A coin-sized, simplified human figure on his forehead, which he can reveal or conceal 16.
- Possession form: Becomes taller and more muscular without acquiring obvious animal or weapon features 24 46.
- Self-Control manifestation: Can enlarge his hands and arms dramatically, exposing prominent blue-black veins and tendons 27 41.
Personality
Tang Shan approaches cultivation through observation and testing. He revises explanations when experiments fail, stops meditation before damaging his meridians, and distinguishes promising possibilities from established results. Even when advising his brother, he openly acknowledges the limits of his knowledge 11 12 37 43.
He is affectionate, teasing, and protective toward his family, often behaving like Su Yuntao’s instructor despite being the younger brother. His protectiveness becomes more measured when he recognizes that discouraging Yuntao’s travels could restrict his independence rather than help him 7 10 24.
He conceals sensitive knowledge and avoids unnecessary confrontation. He repeatedly burns research notes, hides the origins of his remembered exercises, and treats Yu Xiaogang politely because of the latter’s powerful connections. In combat, he favors practical movements and becomes increasingly decisive through repeated encounters 2 7 14 15 28.
Abilities & Skills
Body Martial Soul
His Martial Soul encompasses his entire physical body, including his brain, improving strength, clarity of thought, bodily awareness, and recovery 12 13.
- Low maintenance cost: Can keep it active for extended periods provided he is not using Soul Skills 13.
- Training support: Activation brings his body into a condition that he considers suitable for exercise without a separate warm-up 13.
- Physical resilience: Withstands the violent energy of a thousand-year first ring despite an inefficient cultivation method 27.
- Defense: Coordinated skin, sinews, bones, and Soul Power reinforcement prevent Su Yuntao’s enhanced claws from penetrating his defenses during testing 41.
- Unresolved development: Observes gradual fusion between Martial Soul and body, but has not demonstrated a Second Awakening 14 21.
First Soul Skill: Self-Control
Self-Control grants control over 20% of his body outright, rather than increasing his existing control by a relative 20%. He publicly presents its visible effect as Muscle Enhancement 27.
- Localized enhancement: Enlarges and strengthens chosen muscles, including his hands, arms, chest, and neck 27.
- Attack and defense: Concentrates force into strikes or strengthens muscles surrounding vulnerable areas 27.
- Training precision: Exposes subtle flaws in Human Fist, horse stance, and Standing Stake, allowing him to correct movements that could otherwise cause accumulated injuries 28.
- Force control: Enables exceptionally precise, nearly silent attacks with minimal wasted force 41.
- Limit: His “Seeing the Divine-level” control is partial and skill-assisted; he is not a fully realized martial artist of that realm 27 49.
- Speculation: Controlling Soul Rings or cultivating their age remains an untested possibility, not an established ability 27.
Human Fist and National Arts
Tang Shan creates Human Fist from the practiced movements of workers rather than animal imitation. Its sources include cart-pulling, farming, butchery, carrying water, and hammering metal 21 24 25.
- Bright Force / Overt Force: Coordinates the body to produce powerful physical force; also used to temper skin, flesh, and tendons 21 45.
- Hidden Force: Strikes through defenses and causes pain beneath the surface. He intends to use it to refine bones and internal organs 45 49.
- Standing Stake and horse stance: Tailors posture to the practitioner’s proportions and condition, rather than treating one stance as universally correct 15 17.
- Compatibility limit: Human Fist does not naturally suit Su Yuntao’s wolf-influenced body and instincts, prompting a separate wolf-based approach 21.
- System distinction: Hidden Force and Soul Power remain separate systems that he cannot yet combine 49.
- Future stages: Transformed Force, marrow cleansing, and Blood Exchange belong to his planned path, not his documented achievements 28 45.
Soul Power Cultivation
Tang Shan replaces reliance on the basic Ren–Du circuit with routes discovered through his body’s natural responses 12 28 30.
- Quality at a bottleneck: Continues refining and densifying Soul Power while held at level ten before obtaining a ring 14 21.
- Meridian research: Maps three of the Twelve Regular Meridians without recklessly forcing connections 30 34.
- Improved efficiency: His mapped route doubles his previous cultivation growth rate 30.
- Safety limit: Stops cultivation when his meridians reach their tolerance, even if he retains enough mental strength to continue 12.
Forging and Cooking
- Rapid apprenticeship: Pays Tie Zhong for intensive instruction and learns bellows operation and quenching within three days, then demonstrates exceptional aptitude for hammering iron 35.
- Metal purification: Suggests removing more impurities before fold forging and encourages experiments beyond customary stopping points 35 36.
- Shared research: Allows Tie Zhong to share the improved method, requesting access to future breakthroughs rather than exclusive ownership 43.
- Unrealized goal: Investigates whether forging could eventually support an early form of Battle Armor; he has not produced it 34.
- Cooking: Develops seasoning and food-preparation skills to support demanding training and prepare meals during travel 26 46.
Martial-Soul Research
Tang Shan publishes anonymously through Su Haichao. His writings earn the title Grandmaster, a medal, and Gold Soul Coin rewards from Spirit Hall. Senior figures mistakenly imagine the hidden researcher to be an elderly, exceptionally powerful expert 10 11.
| Theory | Main argument | Evidence / qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Twin Martial Souls | The two Martial Souls should be similar in quality; possessing two does not necessarily guarantee Innate Full Soul Power. | Part of Three Theories of Martial Souls 7. |
| Cultivation at bottlenecks | Soul Power can accumulate without a ring, but ordinary cultivators should generally break through promptly. | Distinguishes accumulation from the practical value of delaying advancement 7. |
| Physical training and ring tolerance | Conditioning can increase the Soul Ring age a person can withstand. | Estimates an improvement of roughly a hundred years; recommends different pacing for ordinary and exceptionally gifted cultivators 7. |
| Fourth Theory | Soul Rings should match the Martial Soul’s nature. | Strengthens his reputation as Grandmaster 10. |
| Fifth Theory | Blood, vital energy, and Soul Power are connected. | Develops from observations of whale rubber and accelerated Soul Power circulation 10. |
| Sixth Theory | Apparently weak Martial Souls may lack suitable cultivation methods rather than potential. | Uses full-powered Blue Silver Grass and the Blue Silver Emperor as examples 16. |
Additional research includes:
- Intention during absorption: Su Yuntao obtains the desired amplification skill while focusing on it, supporting Tang Shan’s theory that expectations can influence Soul Skill formation 3 4.
- Chance versus control: Su Haichao’s failed domain experiment instead yields Teleportation, prompting Tang Shan to question whether deliberately choosing an effect can limit its potential 11.
- Martial Soul compatibility: Proposes that early cultivation harmonizes practitioner and Martial Soul; uses Su Yuntao’s unusual fusion state as evidence 21 40 41.
- Self-created skill framework: Broadens the category to abilities using bodily vitality, Soul Power, or mental power, with higher stages combining energies and potentially involving the world’s rules 33.
Relationships
- Su Haichao — Adoptive father and supporter of his research. Provides cultivation guidance, mediates anonymous publication, and protects him during Soul Ring absorption 1 10 27.
- Su Yuntao — Adoptive elder brother, student, sparring partner, and research collaborator. Awakens Tang Shan’s Martial Soul and helps test his cultivation theories 12 21 40 49.
- Ma Xiunuo — Affectionate elder at Nuoding City’s Spirit Hall who welcomes his library visits and answers questions about current affairs 3.
- Su Yuan — Nod Academy headmaster and hunting companion. Severely injures the Qianjun Ant that becomes Tang Shan’s first Soul Ring 22 26.
- Tie Zhong — Forging instructor and research collaborator. Tang Shan supplies a direction for metal purification while crediting Tie Zhong’s practical work 35 43.
- Yu Xiaogang — Unsuccessful prospective mentor. Insists Tang Shan must have a second Martial Soul despite repeated corrections; Tang Shan never accepts his discipleship 15 16.
- Salas — Spirit Hall bishop interested in retaining ties with the anonymous Grandmaster. Offers Tang Shan a place at Spirit Hall Academy through Su Haichao 11 16.
- Sisi — Su Yuntao’s romantic interest. Tang Shan initially distrusts her based on remembered story events and later helps Yuntao recognize that her farewell offers no commitment 3 29.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Awakening and Independent Cultivation
At six, Tang Shan awakens a rare Body Martial Soul with Innate Full Soul Power. Finding no established path suited to it, he begins developing his own methods through exercise, whale rubber, and bodily observation. He postpones deciding whether to attend Spirit Hall Academy until after obtaining his first ring 12 13 14 16.
His Sixth Theory also has consequences beyond his household: its discussion of the Blue Silver Emperor helps Spirit Hall identify Ah Yin’s nature and pursue her 16 17.
Thousand-Year First Soul Ring
Tang Shan joins Su Haichao, Su Yuan, and Su Yuntao in the Soul Hunting Forest near Starlight City. He refuses unsuitable rings, tests Human Fist against weaker beasts, and obtains the Qianjun Ant’s thousand-year ring after Su Yuan wounds it. Self-Control transforms both his combat performance and his ability to refine training techniques 24 25 26 27 28.
Departure and Star City
After the hunt, the family leaves Nuoding City for Heaven Dou City. Learning that Su Yuntao has encountered a drunken blacksmith with a baby in Holy Soul Village, Tang Shan recognizes the likely connection to Tang Hao and resolves to avoid attracting danger to his Spirit Hall family 29.
In Star City, he learns forging while supporting Yuntao’s arena career. Their experiments explain Yuntao’s unconventional Martial Soul Avatar and uncover a faster cultivation route derived from his Martial Soul and bloodline. Tang Shan also learns that familiar story knowledge does not cover every fighter or opportunity in the wider world 34 35 37 40 41 43.
Journey Toward Heaven Dou City
Yuntao’s rapid growth briefly makes Tang Shan question whether he is merely supporting someone else’s protagonist-like rise. He nevertheless continues progressing in National Arts 45.
On the road, Tang Shan identifies signs of an Evil Soul Master among drained Wolf Bandit corpses. A later battle review records his close-range opening attack, Yuntao’s ranged follow-up, and Haichao’s teleporting finish. He recognizes his own exposure to a possible Blood Explosion counterattack, then uses continued sparring to improve force application and body tempering 46 49.
