Background / History

Early history and Cao Kun’s rescue

Zhao Wuji survived repeated life-threatening battles and fought his way out of Spirit Hall’s encirclement, experiences that hardened the will behind his Immovable King reputation. Twelve years before the opening chapter, he rescued the orphaned Cao Kun during a life-and-death crisis, accepted him as his disciple, and brought him to Shrek Academy. Their meeting also activated Cao Kun’s sign-in system 1 3.

Admissions assessment and Tang Hao’s attack

As Shrek’s vice headmaster, Zhao Wuji oversees the combat assessment for Tang San, Xiao Wu, Ning Rongrong, and Zhu Zhuqing. Tang San impresses him with his composure, quick thinking, and hidden weapons, though Zhao Wuji strikes hard enough to make him cough up blood. Zhao Wuji regards the injury as minor and considers injuries an unavoidable risk of combat testing 2 3.

That night, Tang Hao summons him to a forest outside the academy and confronts him over Tang San’s injury. Zhao Wuji attempts to explain, then refuses to submit when Tang Hao tries to force him to his knees through overwhelming pressure. Flender arrives and stands beside him, but neither can overcome the difference in strength 3 4.

Cao Kun intervenes to defend his teacher and the academy. Zhao Wuji is stunned to see his disciple send Tang Hao flying with a punch and later recognizes Tang Hao’s desperate Ring Detonation technique. After Tang Hao retreats, Zhao Wuji agrees to help conceal Cao Kun’s involvement so that outside factions will not descend on Shrek 6 7 13 15.

Joining Mount Buzhou

Cao Kun explains that Mount Buzhou’s resources helped Zhao Wuji cultivate and that its methods could further evolve his Martial Soul. Zhao Wuji accepts the invitation to join immediately, placing his trust in his disciple rather than sharing Flender’s hesitation 17 18.

Without Zhao Wuji’s knowledge, Cao Kun places an Indestructible Heart Bell Sub-Imprint in his soul. The imprint can nourish him, but also gives Cao Kun a means of controlling him if he reveals Mount Buzhou’s secrets or seriously acts against its interests 18.

After emerging from seclusion, Zhao Wuji learns that Tang San has lost his sight. He offers to contact healing-type Soul Saints and encourages the boy to develop his other senses and Spiritual Power rather than abandon hope. When Tang San and Yu Xiaogang subsequently disappear, he helps Flender organize a discreet search through Suotuo City and nearby settlements 32 38 43.

Following his Martial Soul evolution, Cao Kun appoints Zhao Wuji Chief Left Guardian, placing him foremost among Mount Buzhou’s twenty-four Protectors and assigning him responsibility for external campaigns. His transformation also helps persuade Flender to bring Shrek Academy into Mount Buzhou 48 49.

Star Dou Great Forest expedition

Zhao Wuji initially hopes for a Hundred-Thousand-Year ninth Soul Ring. Cao Kun instead emphasizes physical preparation, supplying body-tempering liquid and directing him to train under his Gravity Domain before the expedition 57 58 60.

In the forest, Zhao Wuji protects the students and supports their Soul Ring hunts. His display of strength forces Dragon Duke Meng Shu to abandon a dispute over Oscar’s Phoenix-tail Crested Serpent. He later prepares to confront the Titan Giant Ape at the risk of his life before Cao Kun summons Dazhuang to fight it 64 68 69.

After accepting that a Hundred-Thousand-Year ring could kill him during absorption, Zhao Wuji follows Cao Kun’s recommendation to seek an eighty- to ninety-thousand-year beast. He helps immobilize the Rift-Splitting Golden Eagle for Flender, then finds his own opportunity in the Mountain-Suppressing Turtle 69 70 71 72.

Cao Kun guides the Soul Spirit Contract that grants Zhao Wuji his ninth ring and preserves the turtle’s consciousness as a Soul Spirit. Once the expedition’s principal goals are complete, Zhao Wuji and Flender remain in the outer region to supervise the students and obtain Ma Hongjun’s third ring 73 74 81.

Academy reform and tournament preparations

After returning, Zhao Wuji supports Flender’s plan to expand Shrek, establish Inner and Outer Courts, and introduce merit-based access to advanced resources. He agrees to keep his Titled Douluo status secret, leaving Flender’s publicly announced Soul Douluo rank to attract applicants without exposing the academy’s full strength 81.

Cao Kun approves the reforms and leaves implementation to the two academy leaders. By the approach of the Advanced Soul Master Academy Elite Tournament, Zhao Wuji and Flender again seek his instructions and receive responsibility for preparing and leading Shrek’s team 82 101.

Appearance

Zhao Wuji has a burly, heavily muscled frame, bronze skin, and large, bell-like eyes. After his Level 89 breakthrough, his physique appears even larger and more powerful, with a faint dark-gold sheen across his skin 31 32.

  • Build: Broad and imposing; described as standing as solidly as an iron tower 61.
  • Eyes: Gleam with an intimidating force after his breakthrough 31.
  • Martial Soul manifestation: The evolved bear has metallic, steel-needle fur, hooked dark-gold claws, and lava-like chest patterns 48.

Personality

Zhao Wuji is blunt, boisterous, and proud of his strength. He celebrates breakthroughs with roaring laughter and enjoys teasing Flender with his newfound power. His rough approach to instruction includes demanding combat practice and treating minor assessment injuries as part of a Soul Master’s development 3 31 48 56.

His pride is backed by exceptional resolve. Even when badly outmatched by Tang Hao, he refuses to yield quietly; when the Titan Giant Ape threatens the group, he prepares to intervene at the cost of his life. He also shows practical compassion toward Tang San after his blindness, offering both medical contacts and encouragement 3 32 68.

He regards Cao Kun with paternal pride and readily places his trust in him. As Cao Kun’s power and support reshape his future, Zhao Wuji’s manner shifts from familiar affection toward open deference. Despite his ambition, he accepts warnings about Soul Ring absorption and agrees to conceal his rank for Mount Buzhou’s benefit 17 69 81 101.

Abilities & Skills

Dark Gold Terrorclaw Bear

His original high-grade Great Strength Vajra Bear evolves into a top-tier Dark Gold Terrorclaw Bear, greatly improving his offensive power, defense, and physical strength 47 48.

  • Possesses exceptionally destructive dark-gold claws 48.
  • Can manifest the bear through his Martial Soul Avatar 68.
  • Releases pressure strong enough to overwhelm Dragon Duke Meng Shu’s aura and end their confrontation without a fight 64.
  • Places substantial demands on his body; Martial Soul quality alone does not make high-age Soul Ring absorption safe 58.

Gravity control

Zhao Wuji creates heavy gravitational fields for combat and training. After obtaining the Mountain-Suppressing Turtle Soul Spirit, his earth control improves and he begins exploring deeper applications of gravity 56 73.

  • Position Tracking, Gravity Enhancement, and Gravity Compression: Used together to trap the Rift-Splitting Golden Eagle and restrict its aerial movement 70.
  • Gravity Domain: Applies layered pressure to students’ exercises and supports his own body-tempering regimen with Flender 56 60.
  • Dark-gold shockwave: Scatters most of the Golden Eagle’s incoming wind blades 70.

Ten Directions Mountain Suppression

His ninth Soul Skill creates a mountain-heavy force field combining offense, defense, and battlefield control 73.

  • Suppresses and disrupts movement, Soul Power, and enemy Soul Skills within its range.
  • Manifests alongside the Dark Gold Terrorclaw Bear and Mountain-Suppressing Turtle Soul Spirit.

Immovable as a Mountain

The Mountain-Suppressing Turtle’s torso Soul Bone grants this defensive skill, forming a solid ochre barrier marked with tortoiseshell patterns 73.

  • Greatly increases defense for a short period.
  • Makes him almost immune to most attacks from opponents at or below his level during that period.

Mountain-Suppressing Turtle Soul Spirit

The turtle retains consciousness after surrendering its physical body through Cao Kun’s Soul Spirit Contract. Zhao Wuji can feel their minds connected and summon its manifestation 73.

  • Strengthens his foundation and adds the turtle’s weighty presence to his Martial Soul.
  • Improves his perception of and control over the earth.
  • Requires continued nurturing and communication through Soul Power and Spiritual Power.

Equipment / Items

  • Soul Rings: His first eight are yellow, yellow, purple, purple, black, black, black, and black. His ninth is black with a faint red glow, reaching the peak of the ninety-thousand-year tier—not a completed Hundred-Thousand-Year ring 3 73.
  • Mountain-Suppressing Turtle torso Soul Bone: Received through the Soul Spirit Contract; grants Immovable as a Mountain 73.
  • Hundred Herb Spirit Spring and Foundation-Nourishing Pills: Cultivation aids that strengthen his foundation, nourish his meridians, and accelerate Soul Power accumulation 16 17.
  • Restorative Spirit Liquid: Repairs his injuries and contributes to his rapid recovery and advancement during seclusion 18 31.
  • High-Tier Martial Soul Evolution Liquid: Consumed to evolve his Great Strength Vajra Bear into the Dark Gold Terrorclaw Bear 47 48.
  • Vajra Body-Tempering Spirit Liquid: Supplied before the forest expedition to improve his capacity to withstand an older ninth Soul Ring 58 60.

Relationships

  • Cao Kun — Rescued disciple whom Zhao Wuji regards with paternal pride. Their relationship develops into one where Cao Kun protects and strengthens his former teacher, while Zhao Wuji serves him as a loyal Guardian 1 17 48 101.
  • Flender — Longtime friend and fellow Shrek leader. Flender stands beside him against Tang Hao; the two later coordinate training, Soul Ring hunts, and academy reforms 4 56 81.
  • Tang San — Student whose assessment injury triggers Tang Hao’s attack. Zhao Wuji nevertheless supports him after his blindness and helps search for him following his disappearance 3 32 38.
  • Tang Hao — Attacks Zhao Wuji over Tang San’s injury and overwhelms him, prompting Cao Kun’s intervention 3 4 6.
  • Mountain-Suppressing Turtle — Soul Spirit partner and source of his ninth Soul Ring and torso Soul Bone; their continuing bond requires cultivation and communication 73.
  • Dai Mubai, Oscar, Ma Hongjun, and Ning Rongrong — Students subjected to his intensified gravity-based training and protected during the forest expedition 56 60 74.
  • Dragon Duke Meng Shu — Rival claimant to Oscar’s prospective Soul Ring. Zhao Wuji’s intimidating display forces him to withdraw 64.
