Background / History
Shrek Academy and Tang Hao’s Attack
Flender had devoted half his life to Shrek Academy before Cao Kun offered him a place in Mount Buzhou. His attachment to its staff, students, and future initially made him reluctant to exchange his headmaster’s identity for membership in an unfamiliar sect 18.
When Tang Hao attacked Zhao Wuji outside the academy, Flender rushed to the scene and demanded an explanation. Although shocked by Zhao Wuji’s concealed Soul Douluo cultivation and frightened after recognizing Clear Sky Douluo, he stood beside his colleague and helped resist Tang Hao’s pressure 4.
Cao Kun’s intervention overturned Flender’s understanding of his former student. After witnessing Tang Hao’s Martial Soul Avatar and Slaughter Domain being shattered, he estimated Cao Kun’s strength at above Level 96, possibly even Limit Douluo. Tang Hao’s subsequent self-destructive attack left Flender and Zhao Wuji immobilized until Cao Kun suppressed it 11 12.
After the battle, Flender pledged support for Cao Kun and helped manage the academy’s recovery. Cao Kun asked that the true events remain concealed, then privately explained his strength through a supposed hidden-sect inheritance 15 16.
Recruitment and Tang San’s Disappearance
Cao Kun’s offer of Martial Soul evolution tempted Flender, but he first questioned Mount Buzhou’s history and motives. He accepted a three-day decision period and restorative treatment, then entrusted Cao Kun with the new students’ first lesson while he and Zhao Wuji entered seclusion. Without either man knowing, Cao Kun also placed an Indestructible Heart Bell Sub-Imprint in their souls: it could nourish them but also permit control if they betrayed the sect’s secrets or interests 17 18.
Flender emerged convinced that Mount Buzhou offered prospects Shrek could not provide alone. Before he could formally accept, Yu Xiaogang arrived at his invitation to teach theory. Flender then tried to mediate the dispute between Yu Xiaogang and Cao Kun without disclosing Cao Kun’s strength or Mount Buzhou’s secrets 27 28.
When Tang San lost his sight, Flender briefly suspected Cao Kun’s involvement but considered it unlikely that someone so powerful would need such an elaborate method. He prioritized treatment, examined Tang San, and called for Oscar’s help and his best medicine 30.
Yu Xiaogang later persuaded him that a private journey offered Tang San a chance of recovery. Flender allowed the departure, unaware that its real purpose was a reunion with Tang Hao. When the pair failed to send word, he sent Ma Hongjun to investigate the supposed medical contact; the report exposed the cover story. Flender and Zhao Wuji searched their rooms and organized discreet inquiries around Suotuo City 35 36 37 38.
Joining Mount Buzhou
Zhao Wuji’s evolution into the Dark Gold Terrorclaw Bear finally prompted Flender to pledge both himself and Shrek Academy to Mount Buzhou. Cao Kun accepted, gave him High-Tier Martial Soul Evolution Liquid, and supervised his transformation into the Flying Blackfeather Eagle 49.
The evolution brought Flender to peak Level 80 and greatly improved his speed, perception, and cutting power. Cao Kun appointed him a right-hand Protector, pairing his intelligence and administrative strengths with Zhao Wuji’s combat role 49.
Star Dou Great Forest Expedition
After consolidating his breakthrough, Flender requested help obtaining Soul Rings for himself, Oscar, and Zhao Wuji. Cao Kun arranged an expedition and prescribed body-tempering treatment so Flender could withstand a powerful eighth ring 56 57 58.
During the journey, Flender imposed weighted marching, warned the students against separating inside the forest, and defended Oscar’s claim to a Phoenix-tail Crested Serpent against Dragon Duke Meng Shu. He also identified a suitable Shadow Mantis for Zhu Zhuqing 61 62 64 67.
His own target was a roughly 45,000-year-old Rift-Splitting Golden Eagle. Flender fought it in the air using Martial Soul Avatar; Zhao Wuji’s gravity skills restricted its flight, while Zhu Zhuqing opened a gap in its feather defense. Flender delivered the fatal attack, absorbed its ring, and advanced to Level 82 70 71.
Academy Reform and Tournament Leadership
After returning, Flender proposed turning Shrek into a larger, structured academy that could cultivate talent for Mount Buzhou. Cao Kun approved the plan, delegated daily operations to him, and supplied funding, political assistance, and support for official certification 81 82.
Flender publicized his Level 82 cultivation while keeping Zhao Wuji’s Titled Douluo status hidden. Shrek’s new Advanced Soul Master Academy certification attracted applicants and returning graduates. Liu Erlong subsequently entrusted Blue Tyrant Academy’s teachers, students, and resources to him before leaving to search for Yu Xiaogang 82 83.
By the next documented tournament preparations, Flender had reached Level 85. Cao Kun instructed him and Zhao Wuji to compete normally and gave them full responsibility for leading Shrek’s team to Spirit City 101.
Appearance
- Glasses: His most consistently noted personal accessory; he frequently pushes or adjusts them during conversations 4 16 18 57 81.
- Robes: He straightens his robes before formally pledging allegiance to Cao Kun 49.
- Later bearing: At Level 85, his aura is described as steady and sharp, with rich, full Soul Power 101.
Personality
Flender is practical, calculating, and proud. Zhao Wuji notes that his outwardly miserly manner conceals considerable pride, making his decision to bow to Cao Kun especially significant. His caution over joining Mount Buzhou reflects concern for personal freedom and responsibility to the academy, rather than simple reluctance to pursue power 18 49.
His protective instincts can outweigh fear. He stands beside Zhao Wuji against Tang Hao and refuses to surrender Oscar’s rightful Soul Ring merely because Meng Shu applies pressure. In crises, he moves quickly from uncertainty to organizing treatment or investigation 4 30 38 64.
As an administrator, he balances ambition with secrecy. His reform plan uses his own public breakthrough to attract talent while concealing Zhao Wuji’s greater strength. He also urges Liu Erlong to use Shrek’s information network rather than risk an unsupported search, though he recognizes that her determination cannot be changed 81 83.
