Background / History

The Nine-Tails once lived freely and occasionally helped reincarnations of Asura’s chakra. Madara Uchiha later controlled him and used him against Hashirama Senju. After Madara’s defeat, Mito Uzumaki sealed the beast inside herself; Yi eventually found him pinned by chains and spikes in her inner space 109 359.

Yi’s warning that Madara might still be alive initially met with disbelief. When Mito and Yi raised the possibility that Madara could awaken the Rinnegan and revive the Ten-Tails, the Nine-Tails began to regard Madara as a threat to his survival. He explained that absorption by the Ten-Tails would kill him permanently, unlike an ordinary Tailed Beast’s death 110 121 177.

The Nine-Tails agreed to cooperate with Kushina if she became his next host, asking Yi to deal with Madara’s lingering control over him. When the transfer took place, he negotiated for a pleasant inner space and less restrictive restraints. He subsequently lent Kushina his power willingly 178 284 356.

Appearance

The Nine-Tails is a great fox whose nine tails are visible both in his sealed inner space and when he fights through Kushina 109 360.

Personality

Kurama is proud of his strength and deeply resentful of Madara’s control and Hashirama’s treatment of him. His fear of Madara and the Ten-Tails makes him cautious, but he bargains for better conditions rather than simply resisting his hosts 176 177 252 284.

His trust in Kushina becomes genuine. He rejects the Eight-Tails’ offer to help him escape, shares control during battle, and warns Kushina against extracting so much chakra from another Tailed Beast that its recovery would burden the natural world 356 359 364.

Abilities & Skills

Chakra and Tailed Beast Bombs

• Kurama has exceptionally powerful, high-quality chakra; Yi describes him as the Tailed Beast closest to the Ten-Tails 110 222.
• He can produce Tailed Beast Bombs repeatedly. While fighting alongside Kushina, his bomb forms faster and proves stronger than the Eight-Tails’ opposing attack 252 357.
• He restores expended chakra by absorbing natural energy 120 359.

Sensory Abilities

• Kurama can sense good and evil, an ability Yi identifies as useful for detecting disguised White Zetsu that ordinary sensory methods cannot distinguish 7 252.
• A small portion of his chakra grants Yi the same sensing ability 130.

Cooperation with a Jinchūriki

• Kurama supplies chakra and helps gather senjutsu chakra for Mito during her fight with the resurrected Hashirama 252.
• He and Kushina exchange control in combat. Their cooperation lets him fight the Eight-Tails directly before Kushina takes over to restrain it with sealing chains 359 360.

Limits and Vulnerabilities

• Madara’s eye power and binding contract remain threats even while Kurama is sealed; Yi delays removing the eye power to avoid alerting Madara 176 178.
• Hashirama’s Wood Release and Uzumaki sealing techniques can suppress him, though cooperation with Mito lets him overcome Wood Release’s usual suppressive effect during their fight 253 357.
• He fears absorption by the Ten-Tails because it would prevent him from returning to life 177.

Relationships

• Mito Uzumaki — His first Konoha jinchūriki. She initially forces his power into service, but they later cooperate against Hashirama 178 252.
• Kushina Uzumaki — His next jinchūriki and willing partner; she gives him room to fight and respects his judgment about the other Tailed Beasts 284 359 360.
• Uchiha Yi — Initially threatens Kurama with Sharingan control, then becomes a prospective protector against Madara. Kurama comes to trust Yi’s intentions 109 178 356.
• Madara Uchiha — Controlled Kurama in battle and remains the person Kurama hates most 176 253.
• Hashirama Senju — Subdued Kurama after Madara used him in battle. Kurama eagerly helps Mito fight the resurrected Hashirama 252 253.
• Sage of Six Paths — Created Kurama from the Ten-Tails and is regarded by him as a father figure 177 280.
• Eight-Tails — Offers to help Kurama escape Kushina’s control; Kurama refuses, then defeats him alongside Kushina 356 359.
