Power Progression

Background and History

Yi is Kagami Uchiha’s son. Because Kagami spent much of his life on missions, Yi was raised under the care of Uchiha Yohei, Mikoto’s grandfather and leader of the clan’s Dove Faction. Kagami’s support for Hiruzen Sarutobi as Third Hokage had helped split the Uchiha between those seeking cooperation with Konoha and hardliners who opposed it 1.

After Kagami dies during the mission to Uzushio, Yi becomes suspicious about the disappearance of his father’s Mangekyō Sharingan. He does not know who has the eyes and resolves to become strong enough to control his own future 1 4. He continues attending the Ninja Academy, trains under Yohei, and later becomes Tsunade’s true disciple. Mito Uzumaki also teaches him and supports his development 4 10 21 24.

Yi seeks closer ties with Konoha’s leadership without abandoning his Uchiha identity. He tells Yohei that such connections could give him a chance to compete for the Hokage position, while Yohei promises to handle opposition within the clan 22. Tsunade subsequently arranges his early graduation alongside Mikoto and Nawaki 26.

Personality

Yi is ambitious, politically alert, and careful about revealing his strength. He expects both clan leaders and village leaders to act in their own interests, and he accepts their help without wanting to become anyone’s tool 1 2 26. He considers loyalty between a clan and its village reciprocal: each should protect the other, but betrayal would justify resistance 20.

In combat, Yi favors preparation and adaptation over a straightforward contest of power. His Battle Space losses make him attentive to the gap between his talent and experienced elite shinobi 3 12 24. Although composed after killing enemy ninja, he says his reason for growing stronger is to survive and protect people whose loss would leave others grieving 43.

Abilities and Skills

Sharingan and chakra

• Yi’s Sharingan progresses from one to three tomoe between ages six and seven. Yohei notes that even Yi’s one-tomoe eyes possess unusually strong ocular power 1 10 12 26.
• A Battle Space victory over Sasuke grants him pure Indra’s Chakra, immediately increasing his eye power and chakra. Yi notices that it also makes his chakra feel colder 3.
• He uses Sharingan genjutsu to create an opening against a Rain Jonin 42.

Battle Space

• The Battle Space presents Yi with random virtual opponents each month. Defeating one grants a randomly selected ability, talent, or physical trait from that opponent 2.
• Acquired gains include Sakura’s chakra-control talent, Nawaki’s mixed Senju–Uzumaki physique, Asuma’s Wind Release proficiency, Minato’s spatial aptitude, and Rock Lee’s hand-to-hand combat experience 11 12 26.
• Other rewards include Haku’s one-handed hand seals, Neji’s Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms, Itachi’s combat wisdom, and Young Tobirama’s sensory ability 24 36 50.
• Yi cannot choose which ability a victory awards him, and opponents such as Sasori and Obito remain beyond him when he first encounters them 2 24.

Ninjutsu and close combat

• Yi has innate Fire and Lightning Release affinities; acquiring Asuma’s proficiency brings his Wind Release skill up to a comparable level 3 12.
• With guidance from Tsunade and Mito, he creates Chidori, an A-rank Lightning Release technique, at age six. Its high-speed charge is dangerous without the visual tracking needed to respond to an opponent’s counterattack 23.
• He studies Body Flicker extensively and combines its speed with swordsmanship. He also incorporates Tsunade’s Cherry Blossom Impact into his fighting style 12 26.
• He can use Earth Release: Earth Substitute to escape an explosive trap 12.
• He acquires Gentle Fist techniques but cannot use them to their full potential—or readily display them in public—without the Byakugan 24 50.

Flying Thunder God and sensing

• Tsunade gives Yi the Flying Thunder God Technique scroll, while Mito helps him study the sealing jutsu it requires 31 32.
• By chapter 50, Yi can perform the technique but has not been able to apply it effectively in combat at high speed. Young Tobirama’s acquired sensory ability addresses that limitation 50.
• He can sense his surroundings within ten kilometers and detect large chakra signatures from at least three times that distance. He considers Flying Thunder God a potential means of escaping enemies he cannot defeat 50.

Equipment and Items

• Sword of the Thunder God — Tobirama Senju’s former weapon, given to Yi in exchange for recording Chidori in the Scroll of Seals. Lightning chakra enhances it, and Yi can channel Chidori through it 27 28.
• Flying Thunder God Technique scroll — obtained for Yi by Tsunade 31.
• Sealing-jutsu guide — given to Yi by Mito as he studies the foundations needed for Flying Thunder God 32.
• Kunai, wire, and Explosive Tags — used together to trap opponents in the Battle Space 3 11.

Relationships

• Kagami Uchiha — father. Yi rarely saw him because of his missions and suspects that the circumstances surrounding his death and missing eyes remain unresolved 1 4.
• Uchiha Mikoto — cousin and childhood companion. She looks after him, trains alongside him, and becomes concerned about falling behind his rapid progress 1 2 9 22.
• Uchiha Yohei — Mikoto’s grandfather and Yi’s early Sharingan instructor. He supports Yi’s training while warning him against arrogance and clan politics 10 22.
• Tsunade — teacher and squad leader. She accepts Yi as a true disciple, helps him develop Chidori, and obtains the Sword of the Thunder God and Flying Thunder God scroll for him 21 23 27 31.
• Mito Uzumaki — mentor who tests Yi’s views on Konoha and the Uchiha, then teaches him techniques and sealing jutsu 20 21 24 31.
• Kushina Uzumaki — friend and teammate. Yi initially worries that closeness to her will attract political attention, but they grow close through school and Tsunade’s squad 5 10 36.
• Hyuga Rinka — teammate. Their first meeting is formal, and Yi later fights alongside her on the squad’s Rain Ninja mission 31 41 43.
• Hiruzen Sarutobi — Third Hokage. He supports Yi’s training and refuses Danzō’s attempts to bring him into Root, though he later becomes conflicted about Yi’s political future 5 27 45 46.

Major Arcs

• Academy and mentorship — Yi returns to school after Kagami’s death, trains under Yohei, befriends Kushina, and earns Tsunade’s and Mito’s support 4 10 20 21.
• Early graduation — Yi develops Chidori, gains the Sword of the Thunder God, and receives approval to graduate early 23 26 28.
• Tsunade’s squad — Yi joins Kushina and Rinka. During a mission against Rain Ninja, he kills a Jonin while Tsunade supervises the team’s first serious combat experience 31 36 41 42 43.
• Sensory breakthrough — while training to make Flying Thunder God useful in combat, Yi acquires Young Tobirama’s sensory ability through the Battle Space 50.
