Background / History
Uzumaki Princess and Konoha’s Protector
Mito is a princess of the Uzumaki Clan with one of its strongest bloodlines. She marries Hashirama Senju, and their son, Mashiki, becomes the father of Tsunade and Nawaki 112 234.
After Madara uses the Nine-Tails against Hashirama, Mito helps seal the beast. Hashirama’s decision makes her its jinchūriki, a role that protects Konoha but requires constant suppression of its chakra 260 359. Danzō later recalls that seeing Mito bring the First Shinobi World War to an end sparked his desire to possess the Nine-Tails’ power 360.
Following that war, Mito largely withdraws to her courtyard and deliberately reduces her political influence. Nevertheless, Hiruzen does not dare place her under surveillance, and even Danzō avoids openly defying her wishes 5 71.
Taking in Kushina and Mentoring Yi
After Uzushio’s destruction, Kushina lives with Mito, her great-aunt. Mito initially considers making her the next Nine-Tails jinchūriki as a means of securing Konoha’s protection and preserving an Uzumaki legacy within the village 9 10.
Kushina’s friendships with Uchiha Yi and Mikoto complicate that plan: Mito recognizes that separating her from the Uchiha would mean taking away her first meaningful connections in Konoha. Instead, she begins teaching Kushina sealing jutsu for two hours each evening, emphasizing the ability to protect herself 10.
Mito personally assesses Yi’s temperament and questions him about clan loyalty, village responsibility, and the duties of a Hokage. Despite sensing qualities reminiscent of Madara and Hashirama, she finds him kindhearted and unlike Madara in disposition. She subsequently teaches him sealing arts and prepares him to help protect Kushina 20 31.
Investigating Madara and Protecting the Uzumaki
Uzushio’s rapid destruction troubles Mito because the clan’s strength and hidden defenses should have made such an attack costly. She begins suspecting an extraordinary enemy, possibly Madara 29 30.
Her suspicion also rests on an older discovery: Hashirama had asked her to retrieve and seal Madara’s body, but it had disappeared. She shares this information only with Yi, fearing that Konoha’s leaders would otherwise blame the Uchiha collectively 109.
With Yi and Kurama, Mito investigates Madara’s possible use of Izanagi, Hashirama’s flesh, and the Rinnegan. She deduces that he may be preparing an Uzumaki pawn to resurrect him and suspects that the white creatures are connected to Hashirama’s cells. These remain deductions at the time of their discussion 120 121 122.
Kushina’s request to shelter surviving Uzumaki finally draws Mito out of her courtyard to approach the Hokage. Once Yi rescues survivors, she asks him to help them establish peaceful lives while supporting ordinary screening and resettlement rules rather than preferential treatment that could provoke resentment 71 175.
Her concern extends to exploitation by Konoha itself. Yi recognizes that her hesitation about relocating the wider clan stems partly from distrust of Hiruzen and Danzō. She later offers him access to old political allies and reconsiders Hashirama’s policy of distributing tailed beasts among the villages 204.
Cooperation with Kurama and Reunion with Hashirama
Years of restraining Kurama drain Mito’s strength despite the Uzumaki Clan’s natural longevity. Yi notices a sharp decline in her life force, which she initially conceals from the others 108 175.
Her relationship with Kurama gradually changes as Madara’s possible return becomes a shared threat. After learning more about the Rinnegan, she thanks him sincerely and asks for cooperation—an unfamiliar kindness from someone who had previously taken his chakra by force 122.
Yi later brings her to the battlefield to reunite with the reincarnated Hashirama and Tobirama. Although he intends only to let her see her husband again, Mito insists on fighting Hashirama with Kurama’s assistance 248 249.
The battle also serves a deliberate purpose: Mito lets Kurama vent his resentment against Hashirama so that he might develop a willing attachment to Konoha and accept future jinchūriki. She chooses Hashirama’s durable reincarnated body as a target she need not fear killing 253.
Death and Return
Yi’s Yang Release treatment prolongs Mito’s life, but after three more years she refuses further intervention. Tired and ready to die, she asks Kushina whether she wishes to inherit the Nine-Tails and receives her willing acceptance 282.
Mito, Yi, and Tobirama have also prepared a safeguard intended to keep Kushina alive if the beast is later extracted. Mito performs the transfer with Kurama’s cooperation, her vitality fading as his chakra enters Kushina 283 284 285. Her death leaves a lasting absence in the courtyard gatherings, particularly for Kushina and Mikoto 292.
Much later, Mito returns to life in a youthful body through the use of Momoshiki’s life force. Reunited with Yi, she offers to help raise his future children 440. She subsequently receives power through a Kāma mark and, after Yi removes the Ōtsutsuki souls, looks forward to protecting Konoha and the wider shinobi world again 444.
Appearance
- Earlier appearance: An elderly woman; her red hair is cited when Yi defends Kushina from classmates mocking the same trait 6 9.
- Nine-Tails transformations: Golden chakra, a solid chakra cloak, changing tomoe markings, and an enormous golden fox manifestation 249.
- After resurrection: A specially made body appearing approximately twenty-four years old, restoring her to youthful adulthood 440.
Personality
Mito is patient and affectionate with the children in her care, listening to Kushina’s school experiences and welcoming Yi and Mikoto into her household. Her trust is considered rather than indiscriminate: she examines Yi’s intentions before supporting him, then respects his privacy instead of pressing him about every unusual aspect of his chakra 10 20 110.
She does not share the blanket hostility toward the Uchiha found among many Senju and Uzumaki. She recognizes Kagami as trustworthy and acknowledges both Tobirama’s earlier opposition to the clan and his later attempts to integrate it into Konoha. Her concern over Yi’s possible Mangekyō awakening comes from fear for his emotional stability, not rejection of his ancestry 10 63 79.
Her composure conceals deep guilt over the Uzumaki Clan’s destruction. She believes her success as a jinchūriki drew hostile attention to the clan’s sealing abilities. She also remains devoted to Hashirama, longing to see him while worrying that her aged appearance might make her unrecognizable to him 239.
Mito can be fierce and teasing with her husband, especially when he prioritizes Madara. Beneath that humor is a practical strategist: even her fight with Hashirama is intended to improve Kurama’s relationship with Konoha, rather than merely settle a marital grievance 248 249 253 440.
Abilities & Skills
Sealing Jutsu
Mito’s sealing expertise anchors both her combat style and her teaching 31 59 168.
- Adamantine Sealing Chains: Suppresses Kurama within her body; his limbs, tails, and head are also restrained with special sealing nails 109 176 357.
- Combat-applied seals: While controlling Kushina’s body, places marks on Jirabi during successive exchanges until a completed seal disables his Lightning Release Chakra Mode and chakra use 59.
- Mental sealing: Orders Jirabi captured so that she can seal his mind. His existing mental protection prevents safe removal: tampering would trigger a lethal lightning surge 59 63.
- Jinchūriki transfer: Personally transfers Nine-Tails chakra into Kushina and participates in preparing protection against future extraction 283 284.
- Space-time countermeasures: Researches sealing techniques or barriers against space-time ninjutsu; completion is not established in the supplied account 77.
- Impure World Reincarnation knowledge: Offered suggestions during Tobirama’s development of the technique and identifies sealing as its best counter 239.
Nine-Tails Chakra and Senjutsu
Mito initially obtains Kurama’s power through suppression and forced chakra linkage. His later willing cooperation unlocks a more effective partnership 178 249 253.
- Chakra extraction and purification: Can provide Yi with purified golden Nine-Tails chakra for research 110.
- Sage Fox Mode: Combines Kurama’s chakra with senjutsu, with Kurama assisting in gathering natural energy 249 252.
- Kurama Mode: Supports a sustained fox manifestation and a rapid barrage of Small Tailed Beast Bombs 253.
- Battlefield intervention: Controls Kushina’s body to defeat Jirabi; Kushina collapses when the golden chakra fades 59.
- Long-term cost: Constantly suppressing Kurama consumes her own chakra and contributes to declining health 175.
Sensory Abilities
Mito can assess unusual chakra, vitality, and hostile intent. Tobirama does not claim that his own sensory abilities surpass hers 20 63 252.
- Distinguishes Yi’s kind disposition from the hostility she remembers sensing in Madara 20.
- Detects Yi’s resentment toward Tobirama without mistaking it for hostility toward herself 63.
- Knows White Zetsu from encounters during the First Shinobi World War and warns that their disguises can defeat ordinary detection 63.
- Does not initially notice Madara’s lingering Eye Power inside Kurama; she attributes this to their lack of harmony 178.
- Even Uzumaki sensory abilities cannot reliably identify White Zetsu; Yi identifies Kurama’s ability to sense good and evil as the dependable counter 252.
Chakra Reserves and Control
- Exceptional reserves: At one point, she is the only publicly known Konoha ninja with more chakra than ten-year-old Yi, who has roughly three times Tsunade’s reserves 77.
- Immediate Rasengan use: Reproduces the technique after understanding its construction, drawing on prior experience forming Tailed Beast Bombs 74.
- Nature-transformation experimentation: Briefly attempts to add a chakra nature to the Rasengan, but does not complete an elemental version in that demonstration 74.
- Research findings: Discovers that Nine-Tails chakra can strengthen Wood Release experiment subjects without consuming their bodies 204.
Kāma
Following her resurrection, Mito possesses a Kāma containing Ōtsutsuki power. Yi erases the associated soul, leaving the power available for her to adapt to 444.
- She describes its power as greater than the Nine-Tails’ 444.
- No specific Kāma-derived combat techniques are demonstrated in the supplied passages 444.
Instruction and Political Judgment
- Teaches Kushina most of her sealing arts and helps prepare her to become the next jinchūriki 282 283.
- Trains Yi in sealing and gives him Hashirama’s Wood Release training notes as preparation against Madara 31 122 204.
- Guides Minato alongside Yi during his early development 77.
- Evaluates fighters through their actual skills and weaknesses, praising Hiruzen’s versatility and explaining the importance of Hanzō’s venom rather than accepting titles at face value 74.
- Leaves political resources that help Yi establish his support base after her death 440.
Relationships
- Hashirama Senju — Husband. Her love endures decades after his death, though his attention to Madara repeatedly frustrates her. Their reunion becomes both a personal encounter and an opportunity to reconcile Kurama with Konoha 239 248 253 440.
- Mashiki Senju — Son, and father of Tsunade and Nawaki 112 234.
- Tsunade and Nawaki — Grandchildren. Tsunade places absolute confidence in Mito’s ability to resolve the crisis against Jirabi; Mito thanks Yi for helping Nawaki mature 59 175.
- Kushina Uzumaki — Great-niece, ward, sealing student, and successor as Nine-Tails jinchūriki. Mito protects her friendships and ultimately asks for her willing acceptance of the role 10 282 284.
- Uchiha Yi — Student and grandson-like family member. He regards her as his most trusted guardian; she protects his development, shares dangerous knowledge, and later offers to raise his children 109 175 440.
- Uchiha Mikoto — A trusted member of the younger circle. Mito approves of her kindness to Kushina, and Mikoto struggles with Mito’s absence after her death 20 292.
- Kurama / Nine-Tails — Former sealed beast and eventual partner. Their relationship changes from harsh restraint and forced extraction to cooperation, culminating in his assistance against Hashirama and agreement to transfer to Kushina 109 122 252 284.
- Tobirama Senju — Brother-in-law and former research collaborator. She understands his achievements but openly recognizes the damage caused by his hostility toward the Uchiha 63 239 277.
- Hiruzen Sarutobi and Danzō Shimura — Village leaders who respect her authority but also raise her concerns about the treatment of Kushina and the wider Uzumaki Clan 5 6 204.
- Madara Uchiha — Former guest in her household and later a suspected threat. He remembers her hospitality fondly but considers her death necessary to his plans; she fears the danger his return poses to Konoha 38 109 253.

Trivia
- Her reputation as the era’s strongest ninja is not a claim she accepts without qualification: she considers herself below Madara and Hashirama at their primes 20 120.
- Kurama’s assistance lets her gain the advantage over a weakened, reincarnated Hashirama who cannot enter Sage Mode; the battle does not establish superiority over his living peak 249 252.
- After resurrection, she recognizes that Yi has surpassed her in sealing when she watches him use the Six Paths: Eight Trigrams Seal on Momoshiki 441.
