Geography and Economy

• Sunagakure occupies oases in the Land of Wind’s desert. Poor soil, scarce resources, and frequent sandstorms make farming difficult 35.
• Mineral extraction is important to the village. Shamon oversees mining of a rare ore, while his disciple Sajie is assigned mineral-panning work 51 90.
• After a financial scheme involving Hatake Sakumo, the Land of Wind’s Daimyo cuts Sunagakure’s funding, leaving the village under financial strain 90.

History

Shamon spends years strengthening Sunagakure’s puppet techniques and jinchūriki program. By the time Konoha confronts Iwagakure, the monk Bunpuku can serve as a fighting force, and Shamon considers exploiting Konoha’s commitment to its northwestern front to gain territory in the fertile southwest of the Land of Fire 41.

Konoha’s victory in the Land of Grass changes that calculation. With Iwagakure’s southern route blocked, Shamon and Sajie choose not to take sides: they tighten Sunagakure’s border defenses and continue building its strength 51. Shamon also calls off an earlier plan to attack toward the Land of Fire 53.

Sunagakure later puts 860 million ryō into the Angel Plan, a financial scheme that Kagami Uchiha expects to collapse. Fearing that a crisis could drive Sunagakure into war, Kagami considers ways to contain the fallout 61 62. Sunagakure suppresses Sakumo’s identity in connection with the scheme and places a bounty on his alias, Jiushi Luren, rather than openly targeting a disciple of Konoha’s Hokage 90.

After Amegakure attacks and loots three Sand trade caravans in the Land of Rain, Shamon sends forces into Rain. The invasion brings Sunagakure into direct conflict with Amegakure and devastates a local village 90 92. Shamon also sends Elder Chiyo and two thousand ninja toward the Land of Wind’s eastern border to guard against Konoha 93. Chiyo subsequently sets a trap for Sakumo at Riftwind Valley, with five hundred Sand ninja blocking the valley mouth 95.

Military Capabilities

• Puppetry: Sunagakure’s puppet techniques undergo major development under Shamon. Its puppet users employ hidden controllers, projectile-firing puppets, and a large crimson puppet in the Riftwind Valley ambush 41 95.
• Jinchūriki research: Years of experiments make Bunpuku capable of serving as a fighting force. Shamon also studies the One-Tail in connection with Magnet Release 41 74.
• Wind Release: Sand ninja use wind techniques in the Land of Rain; one fighter uses a large iron fan to scatter an incoming senbon barrage 92.
