Character developments and interactions
- Luffy risks himself to protect Ace, displaying powerful Gear Fourth attacks and Haki even as Akainu’s magma overwhelms him.

- Sabo rushes to defend Luffy and Ace but is incapacitated by Sengoku. Kuma’s unexplained intervention saves him.
- Akainu remains relentlessly committed to killing Luffy and Ace, even ignoring Whitebeard’s attack and accepting Sabo’s blow.
- Whitebeard makes a costly intervention against Akainu, but Aokiji and Akainu’s combined attacks leave him mortally wounded. His last surge of strength shows that he can still retaliate despite his injuries.
- Rubick helps secure Ace’s escape, while Dino frees him from his cuffs. Foer prevents Ace from rushing back into a battle that is ending.
- Wyper and Lan Zhan reflect on the enormous distance between their current abilities and the strength on display.
Significant themes

- Sacrifice and protection: Luffy, Sabo, and Whitebeard all risk themselves for others.
- Justice and ruthless conviction: Akainu’s fixation on eliminating those he considers evil makes him willing to endure attacks and disregard others.
- The spectacle of war: Sengoku suspects several fighters are holding back or “acting,” while the broadcast lets distant observers confront the reality of the battlefield.
