Background and History

Liu Xin was once a shut-in on Earth. After waking in the Pokémon World in the body of an eight- or nine-year-old, he became bound to a system that restricts him to catching Ground-type Pokémon until he becomes the strongest Ground-type Trainer. More than three years later, he spent three months pursuing a Shiny Cubone near Pallet Town. He finally caught it with a prepared pit trap and set out to challenge Pewter City Gym 1.

On his journey, he caught Mutant Phanpy and Giant Onix, earned Pewter City’s Gray Badge, and began traveling with his rival Ito Hei and novice Trainer Sen Anxiang. He later added Super Gible to his team and won a second badge from Misty at the South China Gym 5 12 15 16 21 25.

At Bill’s Lighthouse, Liu Xin helped the Lighthouse Guardians defeat the Treasure Hoarders by breaking a cage that powered their robot. Learning that the organization exploited captive Pokémon, he vowed to grow strong enough to end its operations. He and Ito Hei then worked together to clear Giant Dragonite’s treasure trial 30 32 33 38.

Personality

Liu Xin is persistent and ambitious, but rarely insists on a fair fight when a trap or tactical advantage will work better. His first capture used an ambush; during the lighthouse trial, he delayed competitors with fire barriers, earthen walls, and concealed Sand Tombs 1 34 35.

He knows when he is outmatched: he avoids powerful Clefable and immediately retreats from a level-60 Venusaur. When his friends and Pokémon are threatened, however, he will spend scarce points and put himself in danger to protect them. His four regular Pokémon are strong but frequently disobedient, making coordination an ongoing challenge 17 31 40 41.

Abilities and Skills

System Access

  • Views Pokémon levels, stats, abilities, and evolution requirements, and receives points and rewards through battles and missions 1 6 20 32.
  • Can exchange points for supplies and abilities. The system normally prevents him from catching non-Ground-type Pokémon 1 6 47.
  • Purchases the ability to understand Pokémon speech, giving him insight into their motives 19.

Battle Strategy

  • Uses terrain, traps, and complementary moves: Phanpy’s Armor-Breaking Fire weakens a defended cage so Cubone and Gible can break it 32.
  • Can assign his unruly Pokémon coordinated roles, though they often act before he gives orders 31 45 46.
  • Retreats from opponents his team cannot realistically defeat 17 31.

Pokémon Contracts

  • Learns a contract method based on mutual trust, an agreed exchange, and a physical token. He earns an injured Shinx’s trust and receives some of its fur as the token 47.
  • The contract lets him temporarily direct an Electric-type Pokémon without catching it. He honors their agreement and lets Luxio go after helping it defeat Voltorb 47 49.

Pokémon and Items

  • Shiny Cubone — His first Pokémon and longtime partner; receives the Bone Collar after Liu Xin completes Luxio’s mission 1 49.
  • Mutant Phanpy — A Ground- and Fire-type Pokémon whose Armor-Breaking Fire bypasses defenses. Its mutation requires a Fire Stone as well as level 30 for evolution 6.
  • Giant Onix — An unusually large, durable Onix caught as Liu Xin’s third Pokémon 12 13.
  • Super Gabite — Caught as a Mewtwo-powered Super Gible and later evolved; its Violet Aurora absorbs damage and strengthens its attacks 20 21 28.
  • Pokémon Egg — A gift from the Lighthouse Guardians; the system fixes its eventual hatchling as a Ground type 32.
  • Fireproof Veil — A permanent system-shop purchase that protects Liu Xin from flames and filters the air, though it cannot keep him safe indefinitely in an extreme fire zone 10.
  • Recovery Spring — Restores Pokémon to full health at 50 points each; usable only once a month. Liu Xin spends 100 points to heal Cubone and Phanpy 6.
  • Absolute Defense — A 500-point purchase for Onix. It takes one minute to charge and withstands attacks for three minutes once active 40 41.
  • Bone Collar — Makes a wearer’s Ground-type moves five times as powerful and increases its experience gain by five percent; only Ground-type Pokémon can use it 49.

Relationships

  • Shiny Cubone — First Pokémon and closest-established partner. They bicker and Cubone sometimes strikes him, but it also pushes him to regain his courage in a desperate battle 1 40.
  • Ito Hei — Friendly rival and traveling companion. They compete for badges, cooperate in Giant Dragonite’s trial, and come to rely on each other’s Pokémon and tactics 3 16 33 38.
  • Sen Anxiang — Traveling companion whom Liu Xin helps catch Pokémon. He entrusts her with his egg before the lighthouse trial and tries to keep her out of dangerous fighting 16 19 30 33.
  • Luxio — Formerly a wild Shinx that Liu Xin trains under a temporary contract. Liu Xin helps it reclaim its territory, then lets it leave as agreed 47 48 49.
  • Treasure Hoarders — Enemies who exploit captive Pokémon and later threaten Liu Xin for disrupting their plans 30 32 33 42.
