Background / History
Liu Xin finds Phanpy trembling in an area hot enough to turn grass to ash. When he touches it, flames erupt from its body; a fiery-bird-shaped mark appears on its forehead, and its eyes turn scarlet. The newly mutated Phanpy loses control and attacks Liu Xin and Shiny Cubone. After a fight that leaves both Pokémon barely standing, Liu Xin catches it before it can charge again 4 5.
Phanpy accepts the capture but initially resents Liu Xin for interrupting its attack. Its experience later stalls at level 20 as its body grows hotter. In the meteorite-heated Special Energy Area, it becomes lively again, absorbs fire energy, and resumes gaining experience. Liu Xin collects Fire Stones there for its eventual evolution 6 7 9.
Appearance
Phanpy is no bigger than a small dog when Liu Xin first finds it. Its mutation gives it a fiery-bird-shaped forehead mark and visible flames; by a later encounter, those flames contain gold flecks 4 43.
- Its eyes turn scarlet during its initial, uncontrolled rampage 4.
- Flames rise from several parts of its body, including its trunk during battle 4 23.
Personality
Mutant Phanpy is eager to fight and difficult for Liu Xin to restrain. It provokes groups of wild Pokémon, attacks before Liu Xin can finish speaking, and charges recklessly when taunted. Praise, however, visibly delights it 7 24 32 43.
It also protects its teammates: during the meteorite’s eruption, Phanpy holds up a Ground Spike barrier around Liu Xin and Shiny Cubone until the danger passes, then collapses from the effort 10.
Abilities & Skills
Armor-Breaking Fire
Phanpy’s mutant ability lets its flames burn through physical defenses, move-based defenses, and shields. Its damage scales with Special Attack 6 7.
- Burns Wartortle even while it shelters inside its shell 23.
- Weakens a reinforced cage so Shiny Cubone and Super Gible can break it; Phanpy can also coat Cubone’s club in the flames 32.
- Remains effective against Weepinbell after the initial strike 43.
Ground and Fire attacks
Phanpy uses both kinds of attacks, allowing it to change tactics when Fire moves are ineffective 6 10.
- Ground attacks: Ground Spike and Earthquake can strike from beneath an opponent or restrict its movement. Phanpy shapes Ground Spikes into a protective barrier during the meteorite eruption 10 18 23.
- Fire attacks: Fireball Technique, Flamethrower, Flame Burst, and Flame Charge provide ranged attacks and a charging attack 7 18 31.
- Its Fireball Technique loses to Shiny Poliwhirl’s Bubble Beam; when Poliwhirl prevents both Pokémon from using moves, Phanpy loses its special-attack advantage and is knocked out in close combat 23 24.
Sand Veil
In a sandstorm, Sand Veil raises Phanpy’s evasion and prevents sandstorm damage 6 7.
Relationships
- Liu Xin — Trainer. Phanpy initially resents his manner of capture but fights alongside him and later shields him from an eruption 5 6 7 10.
- Shiny Cubone — Teammate and its opponent before capture. Cubone later cheers on Phanpy when it chases Liu Xin; the two also combine their attacks to break a cage 5 7 32.
- Super Gible — Teammate. Phanpy and Cubone fight Gible together before Liu Xin captures it; the three later cooperate in battle 21 31 32.
