Background / History
Capture
Giant Onix lived in a mountain range between Pallet Town and Viridian City, where abundant Ground-type energy made local Onix larger and stronger than ordinary specimens. Liu Xin selected the level-13 individual because it was the largest present, despite being much lower-level than some of its neighbors 11.
Liu Xin, Shiny Cubone, and Mutant Phanpy spent an afternoon digging a pit more than twenty meters deep. Cubone provoked Onix into a chase, and both Pokémon taunted it into the trap. Onix endured their attacks with Harden and retaliated with Rock Slide. Cubone eventually knocked it unconscious with Boomerang, allowing Liu Xin to capture it as his third Pokémon and name it Giant Onix 11 12.
Pewter Gym
Giant Onix passed Pewter Gym’s preliminary trial by surviving three minutes against a level-30 Graveler and Pupitar. Their Earthquake and Ground Spikes caused little damage, while its enormous body occupied a fifth of the field 12.
Against Jiro, it defeated the level-15 Omanyte after resisting Water Gun with Harden and Brace. Its next opponent, the level-20 Kabuto, repelled its attacks with the Rebound Trait while Absorb’s seeds grew across its body. The plants drained Onix until it collapsed, forcing Liu Xin to recall it 13 14.
South China Cave and Team Rocket
During Water-type resistance training, Giant Onix and Mutant Phanpy attacked Shiny Cubone after it mocked their difficulty handling the attacks. The team later entered South China Cave, where Onix’s advance led Liu Xin to a Mewtwo-powered Gible. Gible overpowered its Tackle and shattered its Rock Slide; Cubone intervened before Onix suffered further damage 20.
After the cave training, Giant Onix defended Misty’s Gym against Team Rocket’s Water-resistant robot. Earthquake restricted the machine’s movement, its tentacle strikes accelerated Onix through Giant Growth, and Rock Slide destroyed it 26.
Lighthouse Battles and Trials
Giant Onix fought the Treasure Hoarders attacking Bill’s Lighthouse, defeating Vanillish and drawing the attention of enemies who wanted to capture it as fuel for their pain-powered robot. Liu Xin deployed the rest of his team, then assigned Onix to provide Rock Slide support during their coordinated assault 30 31.
Its attempts to break the captive Pokémon’s cage failed: Earthquake and Rock Slide could not penetrate the protective layer, and a direct strike injured Onix itself. The team ultimately needed Mutant Phanpy’s Armor-Breaking Fire to breach the defenses 32.
During Giant Dragonite’s treasure trials, Onix blocked a passage while Metang retrieved the first treasure. It then helped build reinforced earthen walls to delay pursuing trainers. In the final battle, it repeatedly struggled back to its feet after Cubone rallied the exhausted team. Dragonite conceded upon witnessing the four Pokémon’s refusal to surrender 34 38.
Ambush and Tunnel Investigation
When Treasure Hoarders and Team Rocket ambushed the group with a level-40 Hippowdon, Liu Xin purchased Absolute Defense for Giant Onix. The other Pokémon protected it during the charge, and Liu Xin stood between it and the attackers despite his own injuries. Once activated, the move let Onix hold off the enemy while its teammates rested; the rescuers arrived to find it taunting the Pokémon attacking it 40 41 42.
Later, Liu Xin sent Onix underground to investigate suspicious tunnels near Pokémon Academy. It was struck by a super-effective attack and badly injured. The group followed it below and discovered a five-drill digging machine roughly half its size 43 44.
Appearance
Giant Onix has a serpentine body of enormous gray rocks, tapering toward the tail. It is noticeably broader than neighboring Onix and measures more than ten meters long 11.
- Head: A long rocky horn above two black eyes 11.
- Scale: Its size astonishes trainers at Pewter Gym; Jiro states that neither Brock’s nor his father’s Onix is as large 12 13.
- Defensive sheen: Harden gives its body a metallic, silvery appearance 13 30.
- Absolute Defense: Its surface appears almost metallic when the move activates 41.
Personality
Giant Onix is hot-tempered, combative, and easily provoked. Taunts lead it into Liu Xin’s capture trap, and Kabuto’s apparent provocation makes it attack despite its trainer’s efforts to calm it. It also joins Mutant Phanpy in retaliating against Cubone’s mockery 11 14 20.
It enjoys fighting and becomes openly smug when opponents cannot hurt it. After destroying Team Rocket’s robot, it still wants another battle; under Absolute Defense, it mocks Hippowdon and yawns at the attackers. Its stubbornness also becomes a strength: despite severe exhaustion during Dragonite’s trial, it rises repeatedly rather than accept defeat 26 38 41.
Abilities & Skills
Giant Growth / Gigantification
Its size-related trait compensates for its low natural speed 13.
- Physical hits decrease Defense and increase Speed 13 33.
- Team Rocket’s repeated tentacle strikes accelerate it enough to close the distance to their robot 26.
Defensive Abilities
- Rock Head: Listed among its standard abilities 13 33.
- Sturdy: Prevents one-hit knockout moves from affecting it 13 33.
- Harden: Strengthens its rocky exterior; against Vanillish, both defensive stats rise 11 30.
- Brace: Used alongside Harden to withstand Omanyte’s Water Gun 13.
- Limits: Ordinary durability does not prevent Kabuto’s Absorb from draining it, and Water-type attacks still hurt during resistance training 14 20.
Absolute Defense
A system-purchased move that protects Giant Onix against attacks for a limited period 40.
- Cost: 500 Points 40.
- Preparation: Requires sixty seconds to charge; Onix must be protected while motionless 40.
- Duration: Three minutes 40 41.
- Demonstrated effects: Erases Hippowdon’s Sandstorm on contact and prevents Crunch from penetrating its body. Repeated bites begin damaging Hippowdon’s teeth instead 41.
Offensive Moves
- Rock Slide: Defeats Omanyte, destroys Team Rocket’s robot, and supplies ranged support during team battles 13 26 31.
- Earthquake: Cracks the ground and immobilizes Team Rocket’s machine 26.
- Tackle: Uses its massive body for a direct charge 14 20.
- Tail strikes: Defeats Vanillish in one blow and knocks its trainer unconscious 30.
- Smack Down: Attempts to crush Cubone with its tail during the capture encounter 11.
Terrain and Utility
- Dig: Enters underground passages to investigate and locate other Pokémon 43.
- Barrier construction: Uses Rock Slide with its teammates’ help to build and reinforce a wall dozens of meters high 34.
- Elevated lookout: Raises Liu Xin high enough to observe the lighthouse battle from the beach 30.
Relationships
- Liu Xin — Trainer and captor. Risks his life to protect Onix during Absolute Defense’s charge. Bond-Detecting Glasses later show their connection is weaker than Liu Xin’s bonds with Cubone and Phanpy, but stronger than his bond with Super Gible 12 40 47.
- Shiny Cubone — Teammate and rival. Baits it during capture, intervenes against Super Gible, and inspires it to stand again during Dragonite’s trial 11 20 38.
- Mutant Phanpy — Teammate. Helps capture it, joins it in fighting Cubone, and burns away the Sand Tomb threatening the group before Absolute Defense activates 12 20 41.
- Super Gible / Super Gabite — Initially an opponent that overpowers it; later a teammate in coordinated attacks and barrier construction 20 31 34.
- Giant Dragonite — Trial opponent who recognizes Onix and its teammates’ indomitable will and concedes the final battle 38.
