Background / History

Liu Xin pursued Shiny Cubone for three months before luring it into a prepared pit, knocking it unconscious, and catching it. Cubone resented the ambush and initially struck its new trainer with its bone club. Despite that start, the two set out together from Pallet Town 1.

In Viridian Forest, Cubone learned to build its Battle Armor by dodging attacks. Its fight with an armored Rhyhorn exposed the limits of direct blows, but it won by evading repeated charges and tripping Rhyhorn with its bone 2 3. Later, while fighting Mutant Phanpy, it gained Flameproof under intense fire; Phanpy’s Armor-Breaking Fire could still injure it 5. Training beside an extraterrestrial meteorite subsequently upgraded that resistance to Perfect Fire Resistance 9 11.

Appearance

Shiny Cubone is small and gray-green, and fights with a bone club 1 11.

• Fiery red streaks appeared across its body after its meteorite training; it did not gain a Fire type 11.
• Battle Armor manifests as small stones gathering over its body as it dodges 2 24.

Personality

Cubone is proud, combative, and quick to taunt opponents. It often celebrates by swinging its bone club close enough that Liu Xin has to dodge, and it once sided with Mutant Phanpy when Phanpy chased their trainer with fireballs 3 7 11. In battle, that bravado is matched by discipline: Cubone can patiently evade, build its defense, and wait for a counterattack 15 24.

Its loyalty becomes especially clear under pressure. It snaps Liu Xin out of fear during an overwhelming attack, then later rises after a fight with Giant Dragonite and calls for its fallen teammates to stand as well 38 40.

Battle Armor and Perfect Evasion

Battle Armor prevents critical hits, improves evasion, and raises Cubone’s Defense with each successful dodge. Perfect Evasion lets it exploit that buildup against repeated attacks 1 3.

• It used dodging to exhaust Rhyhorn and to prepare a decisive counterattack against Jiro’s Lairon 3 15.
• Battle Armor remained usable when Shiny Poliwhirl’s ability blocked moves, allowing Cubone to turn a close-range fight in its favor 24.
• Phanpy’s barrage interrupted its evasion and shattered its accumulated armor 5.

Fire Resistance

Cubone gained Flameproof while enduring Mutant Phanpy’s flames. After training at the meteorite, it gained Perfect Fire Resistance: Fire-type moves could no longer harm it and could instead be absorbed into its Special Attack 5 9 11.

Bone-Club Combat

Cubone uses its club for both close-range strikes and returning Boomerang attacks 1 3.

• It can deflect charges and split an incoming Aqua Jet with the club 2 14.
• Endure lets it withstand attacks while building power for a counterstrike 3 8.
• When its club was out of hand against Umbreon, Cubone recovered its confidence and landed a decisive Ground Spike before the returning Boomerang finished the fight 50.

Other Abilities

• Rock Head — its listed ability prevents recoil damage from moves 1.
• Lightning Rod — draws Electric-type attacks without Cubone taking damage from them 1.

• Bone club — Cubone’s regular weapon, used for strikes, defense, and Boomerang attacks 1 2 3.

• Mutant Phanpy — teammate and occasional partner in mischief; they fight together against Super Gible and combine Phanpy’s Armor-Breaking Fire with Cubone’s club to break a reinforced cage 7 21 32.
• Giant Onix — teammate whose rivalry with Cubone sparks a fight during training; Cubone also helps Liu Xin capture it 11 12 20.
• Giant Dragonite — trial opponent who acknowledges Cubone and its teammates after they rise despite severe exhaustion 37 38.

Story Role / Major Arcs

• Pewter Gym: After Giant Onix falls, Cubone defeats Jiro’s Kabuto and Lairon, securing Liu Xin’s Gray Badge; it collapses from exhaustion shortly after the final win 14 15.
• South China Gym: Cubone overcomes Shiny Poliwhirl’s move-blocking ability, then defeats it once moves are restored, earning Liu Xin another badge 24 25.
• Lighthouse trial: Cubone helps free captive Pokémon from a reinforced cage. Later, its refusal to stay down against Giant Dragonite inspires Gabite, Phanpy, and Onix to rise, prompting Dragonite to concede 32 38.
