"Let's keep this short, kid. Could you wait over there for a bit?"

Xu Mu's father spoke first, asking Cynthia to step away.

Cynthia glanced at Xu Mu, nodded obediently, released his hand, and went aside to tend to Charizard and Greninja's wounds.

Once Cynthia had walked away, his father reached out and patted Xu Mu's head.

"You've grown taller and better-looking. Still not as handsome as me, though."

As he spoke, he gave Xu Mu another once-over.

"Your mother... is she doing all right?"

Xu Mu nodded.

"She's fine. She cried a lot at first, but after a while, she got used to it."

"Oh, and I told her to remarry. She gave me a little brother, too. The four of us are doing great."

Xu Mu rambled on, thinking to himself, Mom, this is as far as I can go. I really can't bring myself to punch him right now.

His father laughed at Xu Mu's words.

He smacked Xu Mu on the head and said with a grin,

"You're lying to your dad?"

"You really think I don't know anything?"

"Forget it. I won't hold it against you. It's been years since we've seen each other, so let's have a proper talk."

Xu Mu nodded.

His father smiled and went on,

"I'll take care of what happened here later. No one will hold you responsible."

"Don't worry. Your old man's a respectable person."

Xu Mu remained speechless.

His father seemed to realize how awkward the conversation was and changed the subject.

"Why aren't you in school?"

Xu Mu thought for a moment, then said, "I didn't want to be a trainer, so I took time off."

His father flared up at once!

"You don't want to be a trainer? Then how are you going to find me?"

"This world is dangerous. If you're not a trainer, how will you protect yourself? How will you protect your mom?"

Xu Mu stared at his father, then said calmly, "Not being a trainer doesn't mean I'm weak."

"That's still not good enough! You've barely started. Elite Four, Master, Grandmaster, Supreme—none of that is enough!"

"If you don't work hard and your old man dies one day, you'll be completely helpless!"

His father spoke in a rush, as though some danger really could destroy the world at any moment.

Xu Mu felt helpless.

"What's wrong with taking it easy?"

He was starting to suspect his father might be an actor the damn system had hired.

If nothing else, that tone sounded just like the damn system, always pushing him to get stronger!

"Hm? An engagement?"

Xu Mu asked curiously, "Tell me. Whose daughter?"

His father shook his head, at a loss for words. "You don't know her. She's a comrade's daughter. But that blonde girl looks pretty good, so let's put the engagement on hold for now."

Since his father wouldn't say more, Xu Mu didn't ask.

After all, I may be a shameless pervert, but I still have principles. I can't go chasing another girl when I already have one, can I?

"Well, there's nothing else I need to tell you. Seeing you doing well puts my mind at ease."

His father thought for a moment. There really didn't seem to be anything more to say.

He stood, dusted himself off, and turned his back to Xu Mu.

"Remember this. When you're out there, don't be afraid of anyone."

"Your dad's still alive. If trouble comes, I'll show up."

"I'm out there risking my life beyond the border. I'm not about to let someone bully my son!"

"As long as your dad's alive, make all the trouble you want. Even if you punch a hole in the sky, I've got you covered!"

With that, he slowly started walking away.

"Stay alive, and take care of your mom. If anyone gives her trouble, don't hold back. Just kill them."

"I'm off. Come find me when you're stronger. Or if you're about to die one day, I'll come back and save you."

With those words, his father whistled, and a Warfeather Eagle descended from the sky.

He was gone.

The man had arrived in a whirlwind and left just as quickly.

Xu Mu looked up, watching the Warfeather Eagle shrink to a black speck on the horizon before it finally left the Viridian Wilds.

His father had refused to tell him anything outright, but Xu Mu had still picked up a few important clues from what little he'd said.

Danger. He kept saying this world was dangerous.

But wait...

Wasn't the world at peace? Didn't the Eastern Lands and Western Europe get along?

The border. His father said he was stationed at the border, risking his life and fighting battles.

And he said I'm weak.

Even a Supreme isn't strong enough!

What's going on? What kind of danger takes someone stronger than a Supreme to face?

Xu Mu shook his head and decided not to think about it for now.

After all, he was still a newcomer. He was a long way from becoming a so-called Supreme!
