Power Progression

Background and History

Nuen found Xilian as a sleeping child inside an iron coffin that appeared during an origin-energy tide. The coffin bore an Ouroboros emblem; despite the surrounding Grey Fog, Xilian showed no corruption. Nuen took him to White Cliff Town, named him, gave him his surname, and raised him as a student. He concealed the coffin to protect Xilian from fear of his origins. Xilian’s past before the discovery remains unknown 2 16.

Beginning at age eight, Xilian accompanied Nuen on night patrols. After surviving a night alone in the Wilderness—and exposure to the Grey Fog—he agreed to a dangerous supernatural ritual so he could help protect White Cliff Town and eventually reach the wider world. He later became a Torchbearer through the Sunflower Clan’s blood ritual 2 3 5 8 12 14.

During the assault that destroyed White Cliff Town’s lighthouse, Xilian fought the Oathbreaker Toren and helped Nuen defeat the Deathbird. Mick died in the battle, and Nuen sacrificed himself to shelter the survivors until dawn. After Ava, Tim, and the remaining survivors also died, Xilian buried them, took Nuen’s sword and flag, and left for Confluence City Hel seeking revenge 29 33 35.

In the Wilderness, Xilian met Bruce, an amnesiac Spirit Artisan in a white dog’s body. They traveled to Hel together. Xilian concealed his background from the City Guard Bureau, then joined it for an income and a means of investigating Chaos. On his first solo city patrol, he traced a Chaos presence to a hidden ritual chamber connected to the mycelium he associated with Tania 38 40 42 45 49 50.

Appearance

Xilian is a black-haired young man who is seventeen when he reaches Hel. Years of training gave him a strong build even before his Torchbearer transformation 7 40.

• His Torchbearer power can show as reddened blood vessels and fiery patterns beneath his skin 12 14.
• His left-palm Ouroboros Mark appears molten gold when active; his eyes can also glow gold 3 29.
• In the City Guard Bureau, he wears a gray uniform and carries the Boiling Sword with its hilt wrapped to hide the Sunflower Clan crest 47.

Personality

Xilian meets danger with jokes, improvisation, and stubborn confidence. He is curious about the world beyond White Cliff Town and spent years restoring a motorcycle to make that journey possible. His willingness to risk the Torchbearer ritual also reflects a sense of responsibility for the town 3 6 7 8.

White Cliff Town’s destruction turns that resolve toward vengeance. Xilian recognizes that he enjoys killing enemies of Chaos, even as he tries to restrain rage that wastes his strength. By the time he confronts the ritualists in Hel, he openly accepts that the pursuit itself has become part of what he wants 20 35 36 50.

Torchbearer Traits

• Strengthened body — Increased strength, stamina, resilience, and healing; he moves and fights markedly faster than before his transformation 14 15.
• Soul Marrow — His blood gradually produces it. Burning the Soul Marrow within his body grants a brief surge of power but takes a heavy physical toll 14 20.
• Protective flame — Soul Marrow can fuel fire that resists Grey Fog and burns creatures of Chaos. Blood can also intensify the flames on his blade 2 19 50.

Ouroboros Mark and Blessing

• The mark warns Xilian of Chaos through burning pain and helps him resist its effects. It also acted in the Origin Sea, though Xilian does not understand its full nature 3 10 11 15.
• Its evolving blessing, Cultivation of Ten Thousand Forms, responds to his battles with Chaos. Killing stronger Chaos-aligned enemies can refine his Soul Marrow; ordinary Demons eventually cease to satisfy it 16 20 24 30 36.
• Its Hatred and Malice manifestation replenishes Soul Marrow and Source Energy as he fights Chaos. The blessing is also described taking the form Wrathful Abomination during the battle for White Cliff Town 32 33 50.

Combat and Practical Skills

• Trained by Nuen in swordsmanship, firearms, night patrol, and Wilderness survival 2 3 35.
• Maintained White Cliff Town’s Torchlight Lighthouse at dawn, though he could not repair its complex Beacon Array 6.
