Location and Origins

White Cliff Town stood beside the white cliff from which it took its name. The Dark World lay beyond the cliff, close enough that an ordinary traveler risked Chaos corruption by approaching it. Its remote position discouraged caravans, and the town went more than twenty years without contact with the outside world 3 6.

The Sunflower Clan reclaimed the land during the Renaissance Era and established a base there. The site changed hands several times before becoming White Cliff Town. By Xilian’s time, even Mayor Boll did not know much of its earlier history 6 14.

Infrastructure and Daily Life

• Torchlight Lighthouse — Burned Soul Marrow to cast light over the town at night, holding back Grey Fog and Chaos. Its Beacon Array was attributed by Nuen to the Court of a Thousand Mechanisms; no local mechanic knew how to repair it 2 6.
• High wall and gate — Enclosed the town against the Wilderness. The gate was its most dangerous point at night, while Soul Marrow torches along the wall supplied additional protection 18 19.
• Armory — An equipment room near the lighthouse, used by Nuen as a residence and by Xilian for training. It also housed a Soul Marrow Refining Room 4 22.
• Town Hall — A partly ruined, formerly grand building used for gatherings and as a refuge during Tidal Night. Parts of its ruins had been rebuilt as homes 6 8 19.
• Stores and farms — Extensive underground stockpiles and tiered farms sustained the town despite its isolation. Nuen said the Court of a Thousand Mechanisms left them behind 6.

Nuen Soflova was long the town’s only Torchbearer and Transcendent. He supplied Soul Marrow from his own blood to keep its defenses operating, while his students patrolled the walls. Mayor Boll led the town, and volunteer guards helped defend and maintain it 5 7 19 22.

Decline and Destruction

• Growing shortage — Soul Marrow reserves dwindled until the lighthouse’s light barely covered the wall. Nuen and Boll planned for Xilian to become a Torchbearer, cross the Wilderness, and seek supplies and support from Confluence City Hel 8 15 18.
• Tidal Night — Grey Fog overwhelmed the town’s light and Demons assaulted its defenses. Residents sheltered at Town Hall while Xilian, Nuen, the Soflova Brothers, and the guards fought through the night 19 20.
• Final attack — During a later celebration, a Crimson Sun–driven blast destroyed the wall and killed many residents. Deathbird then destroyed the Torchlight Lighthouse, allowing Grey Fog and Demons to flood the town 27 28 29.
• Abandonment — With the lighthouse gone, buildings burned and Chaos saturating the town, Xilian concluded that the survivors could not remain. After their deaths, he buried them on a hillside and departed by motorcycle for Confluence City Hel 30 34 35.
• News beyond the town — Her City’s Starwatchers confirmed that a nearby lighthouse had gone dark. Xilian recognized the report as news of White Cliff Town 42.
