Background and History

Nuen was born in a city-state trapped in the Dark World. After the Sunflower Clan broke its long siege, he joined its expeditionary force. The clan pursued the Chaos-aligned Doom Omen Clan for a century, but was then ambushed deep in the Dark World. Commander Frey led its main force into a final battle while Nuen’s teacher sent the recently initiated Nuen with those escaping. Of nearly a thousand who fled, Nuen alone reached Daylight Holy City 14.

Unable to secure help rebuilding the clan, Nuen eventually settled in White Cliff Town, a former Sunflower Clan stronghold. He grew attached to its people and remained its only Torchbearer, repeatedly refining Soul Marrow from his own blood to sustain the town’s defenses 14 22.

Nuen found Xilian asleep in an iron coffin that appeared from the Spirit Realm during an origin-energy tide. He took the uncorrupted child home, adopted him, and gave him his name and surname. He initially concealed the coffin to protect Xilian from fear of his origins and possible suspicion from the townspeople 2 16.

As the town’s Soul Marrow reserves dwindled, Nuen prepared Xilian for Transcendence despite having lost a student to an earlier failed ritual. He later gave Xilian the living blood entrusted to him by Frey, making him a Torchbearer. Although rebuilding the Sunflower Clan was Nuen’s own dream, he refused to impose it on Xilian 7 8 14.

When Deathbird’s forces destroyed White Cliff Town’s lighthouse, Nuen fought their leader and helped defeat him. With the remaining Soul Marrow contaminated and the protective fire dying, Nuen entered the flames himself. His body fueled a pure fire that held back the Grey Fog until dawn 28 32 33.

Appearance

Nuen has a rugged, weathered face and an old abdominal scar from the siege that destroyed his clan’s expeditionary force. Burning Soul Marrow makes his blood vessels and skin glow with heat 14 25 26.

Personality

Nuen is stern, sparing with praise, and uncompromising toward Chaos corruption. His reserve masks deep attachment to the children he adopted: after years of losses, he called them students rather than children in the hope that grief would hurt less, but admitted it never did 3 21 33.

He carries guilt over the Sunflower Clan’s fall and remains devoted to protecting White Cliff Town. He prepares to kill Xilian if a ritual returns him corrupted, yet embraces him when he succeeds. At the end of his life, Nuen gives Xilian the clan’s sword while explicitly freeing him from the duty of rebuilding it 9 12 33.

Soul Marrow and Flame

As a Torchbearer, Nuen can burn the Soul Marrow in his blood for greater power and produce fire effective against Chaos 14 26.
